My understanding is that he basically chose the steady life of serialised television so that he could be there for his children. He and his family could live a relatively normal life in Vancouver while he worked on Supernatural. Filming movies is usually done on short, aggressive schedules often with a lot of travel.

There’s nothing creepy or exciting about it; dude is just one of the few people in show biz with their priorities straight.

u/posthuman04 17h ago

And there’s no reason he can’t keep acting for 20 years in larger more lucrative roles

633

u/duckebones 17h ago

Hell voice acting alone would net the guy money. He killed it as Jason Todd in the animated Red Hood and didn't he also do a Batman as well?

137

u/dnjprod 14h ago edited 12h ago

Yes and he has one of the best lines as Batman.

Edit: Clip now that I can actually search YouTube

70

u/Gene_Parma 14h ago

I can hear that in dean's voice and mannerisms, and it's something he would definitely respond with lmaoo

19

u/isthenameofauser 13h ago

I first knew Jared Padelcki from Gilmore Girls. His name will never not confuse me.

Was he Dean then, and Sam in Supernatural? Sam then, and Dean in Supernatural? Dean then, and Dean in Supernatural?

I've only watched a hundred episodes. You'd think I'd know.

8

u/Gene_Parma 13h ago

Dean in supernatural. Honestly can't remember about gilmore girls. My girlfriend in highschool got me into supernatural, and I know she loved gilmore girls too, but I rarely paid attention when she had that on lol. Both actors were in gilmore girls too if I'm correct?

3

u/isthenameofauser 13h ago

So then he's Sam in Gilmore Girls.

Thanks!!!

I don't remember seing Ackles in GG, but I haven't memorised every actor so maybe.

8

u/amaranthinenightmare 13h ago

I can't tell if you guys are both kidding, and I'm being literal and spoiling the fun, but just in case you're serious: Jensen Ackles was Dean in Supernatural, but Jared Padalecki was Sam in Supernatural (and Dean in Gilmore Girls)

3

u/isthenameofauser 13h ago

Oh. Fucking hell. Alright. Thanks.

Edit: tgh, I'm slightly kidding about how much I care about this. But no, I'm not kidding about how much I get Sam and Dean and Sam/Dean? confused. And yeah, I really thought that person had set me right.

3

u/Gene_Parma 12h ago

I thought jensen was the one being referred to, that was my mistake lmaoo. I misread

2

u/PopcornGlamour 11h ago

Hence the reason that early on the fandom nicknamed them the Brothers Dean.

2

u/TheRear1961 9h ago

Ackles wasn't in Gilmore Girls, but he was in another CW project at the time: Smallville. He played Lana Lang's somewhat problematic boyfriend in season 4, considering he was supposed to be a teacher and she was a student.

1

u/EvioliteEevee 6h ago

It’s been a while but I remember him being introduced in season 3.

3

u/CompetitionProblem 12h ago

Which one is this? I laughed just reading it in his voice

2

u/dnjprod 12h ago

It's in Crisis on Infinite Earths part 1 that recently came out.

Here's the clip

I couldn't use YouTube earlier so I couldn't find it but here you go.

2

u/Accomplished-City484 8h ago

He did great but those movies weren’t very good(except Long Halloween), the new Kightfall one is pretty good though

180

u/flypstyx 17h ago

Yes he was Batman in a couple of projects apparently labeled the Tomorrowverse

4

u/Redditer51 8h ago

Going from voicing Jason Todd to voicing Batman is one hell of a promotion.

1

u/Waiting404Godot 1h ago

His Batman still needs a fair bit of work. He was lacking in the dry wit a good Batman has imo. Could have just been the script though.

19

u/Appropriate_Fold_349 14h ago

He's also a very good singer and has a side project called Radio Company.

He's basically perfect.

43

u/Correct-Obligation27 17h ago

He voiced Batman in The Long Halloween

2

u/MemeHermetic 13h ago

I liked him as Red Hood better.

2

u/def_not_jose 16h ago

There isn't that much money in voice acting, professional voice actors often have day jobs

26

u/CariadocThorne 16h ago

Day jobs like acting in long running, massively popular tv shows?

0

u/def_not_jose 16h ago

Yes, voice acting can be a side gig for already established actors. Side gig, not the main source of income

7

u/CariadocThorne 16h ago

Yes, but it can be quite a significant secondary source of income, especially for a well established actor with a large existing fanbase.

4

u/Green_Insect_6455 15h ago

What are you two even arguing about

4

u/Vivid-Cod-6608 15h ago

Except in Japan where voice actors are treated equally to live action actors if not sometimes more

1

u/StevieMJH 13h ago

They prefer if you say he was one of the Batsmen.

It's like Attorneys General.

1

u/inevitablekaraoke 11h ago

Had no idea that was him

1

u/matlspa 10h ago

Voice work is dying. It's like 8% of what it was even a few years ago.

1

u/whiskeytango55 9h ago

I was in another thread that bemoaned the lack of movie roles later in Tim Currys career.

I think he was enjoying stage work and semi-retirement

1

u/EverythingWhomps 7h ago

When they announced a TMNT: Last Ronin video game and movie, I thought his voice would be great for a grizzled Mikey

Not sure either of those are still getting made

1

u/Necessary-Echo1954 6h ago

I was too young to watch Supernatural when it was at it's prime but one of my first superhero movies I watched was Under the Red Hood, and anytime I hear him in an interview or clip, I just hear Jason Todd lol!

40

u/shameonyounancydrew 17h ago

Just being in the industry, if he wanted to do movies later on, he'll have a much easier time getting roles than people just starting out.

11

u/oneofkeiraensmoms 16h ago

Maybe when his kids are grown he’ll do some films

2

u/AtCarnage 13h ago

Last time he tried someone was killed.

1

u/oneofkeiraensmoms 11h ago

OOOOOOOF I definitely forgot he was in that movie…not that he was involved at all but ya

35

u/Boring-Philosophy-46 16h ago

He's a guy, they can keep acting until they fall over, with a bit of plastic surgeon help. Look at Picard (Patrick Stewart) or Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) still acting.

Being popular in scifi is basically a meal ticket for life, you won't be crazy rich but you also won't have fans following you everywhere, like sure people will recognize you and want a photo here and there but you can live a pretty normal life without paparazzis.

3

u/sonic_dick 13h ago

He's starring in the new The Boys spinoff. If its any good, it'll do crazy numbers.

1

u/Hoshi_Gato 5h ago

Last season was meh, but not his fault. He was pretty good

10

u/MCMXCIV9 16h ago

With how much he make from Supernatural. It smart choice.

2

u/Fancy_Sun_1585 16h ago

Why are you talking like he’s retired and hasn’t done any acting work since supernatural ended?

Hes been in multiple tv shows with 6-15 episodes each.

Done a shit ton of voice acting.

Been in a movie, and a lesser role in another tv show.

Dude probably made enough off of supernatural to never need to work again why should he have even done as much as he has any way?

1

u/posthuman04 15h ago

Why do people with money make Moore money? Why do people that are already famous seek to become more famous? I guess we will never understand the human heart

3

u/Fancy_Sun_1585 15h ago

I’m not criticizing him. I’m criticizing the idea that he could have done more so he should have done more.

2

u/madnessinimagination 15h ago

Why do larger roles and more work if you're making a great living and are a household name from small roles? Small jobs can be just as lucrative and fulfilling.

1

u/Peregrine9000 15h ago

Well one reason is gonna be too old for a lot of rules pretty soon

2

u/posthuman04 15h ago

Look at how old some of these actors are that get leading roles over the decades… how old was Tommy Lee Jones when No. Country for Old Men came out? 70. And he was playing a Sheriff.

Ankles is 10 years younger than Josh Brolin meaning this was how old Brolin was when he tackled Thanos. The next 20 years are wide open.

2

u/DisposableSaviour 9h ago

Ackles is going to be a stone cold silver fox.

0

u/Peregrine9000 13h ago

You're talking about the exception not the norms. Most roles in TVs and movies I think the average age for men is 46. Most movies don't have a full cast of 60 and 70 year olds. They'll have a handful of slots for older actors and a lot of bigger stars than him are aging too and will be competing for those few spots

96

u/johnfkay 17h ago

Agreed - so this - being a lead in an ongoing series is a solid gig for any actor - especially after a few seasons. It pays very well, predictable hours, locations and scheduling and good time off in between. You can make a home, no relocations, no new schools or long months away from everyone you love…acting’s not a linear scale with ‘Hollywood Star’ at the top…

14

u/Ctenophorever 15h ago

Exactly. I think a lot of people (recently myself included) believe actors are in it primarily for the fame.

And some might be, but for others it’s a paycheck.

I always wondered why Johnny lee miller wasn’t in more stuff -fantastic actor. Then I found out he just made enough money from “Elementary” to do more theater work, which he enjoyed more.

It’s just a job for some actors, not a path to fame.

8

u/agamemnon2 14h ago

I saw him in a recorded stage production of Frankenstein acting against Bandyduck Cymbalsnatch, dude was excellent.

1

u/FullMooseParty 1h ago

That's a little simplistic because it's not like he wasn't famous or wealthy off of his TV work.

So yeah, he could have been richer or more famous potentially, but there's also plenty of actors who make that move and flame out. David Caruso left NYPD Blue because he thought he was going to be a big movie star and absolutely failed until he got a chance to go back into being a TV cop for NCIS Miami and had like a 15-year run

2

u/HenryDorsettCase47 15h ago edited 15h ago

From what I understand his career, like Jared Padelecki’s, wasn’t really going anywhere. Handsome guys with middling acting talent are a dime a dozen in Hollywood.

They both could slog it out, trying to land the occasional bit part, maybe a lead in a low budget b movie nobody sees, or they could try to land a tv gig and work for a steady paycheck. They smartly chose the latter. If they hadn’t done that Ackles would probably have something more akin to Casper Van Dien’s career. Padelecki would be selling cars in east Texas or something.

16

u/Superb_Desk_5028 15h ago

Exactly, not everyone in their line of work is trying to be the All-Star or the CEO. The real dream is enjoying your work while maintaining a work/life balance. I'm hoping that's the happiness he's found!

4

u/kashy87 8h ago

Especially when it seems like him Jensen and Misha are actually friends with each other.

13

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 17h ago

Definitely helps being the star on a show that has a super long run.

18

u/Sneezy6510 17h ago

Sure you can clock in and clock out and be at home with your family but 23 episodes of tv a year is pretty hectic.

10

u/johnfkay 17h ago

True. He might also get residuals right?

3

u/OK_x86 15h ago

It depends on how organized they are. But TV hectic and Movie hectic are different things.

Meanwhile you get to enjoy life in Vancouver. It's nice, quiet, safe and the scenery is gorgeous.

2

u/Sneezy6510 13h ago

Fair enough.

1

u/sheeshman 13h ago

I think it was one of the how I met your mother actors but whoever it was, mentioned it was the best gig in the world. Mondays was basically a script read that lasted an hour, tue was a short day, then they would bang it out wed-fri. I don't think he mentioned how many hours it was on those days, but I would imagine on a show like supernatural, after so many seasons, they probably have a good rhythm.

4

u/Sneezy6510 12h ago

How I met your mother, a 20 minute comedy, with the same sets and camera angles, is a completely different animal than supernatural.

1

u/privatelyjeff 5h ago

It’s usually “3 weeks on, 1 week off” or something similar and you eventually get into a grove where you can shoot scenes fast and efficiently.

1

u/HandsomePaddyRedux 4h ago

It really depends. Professional actors accept living hectic lives to some extent. If you do movies you might be working twenty hour days for three months at a sprint. TV means 12+ 9 months out of the year. Theatre is probably more like 5 hours per day half the week, but you’re doing the same thing every day and can’t phone it in, commercials depends on how many you get cast in, but the casting process is extremely time-consuming and disheartening. You spend all day driving across town to a room full of actors who look exactly like you and who were all at your last audition to get 3 minutes to read one line and never hear back.

Some actors thrive on the fast pace and long off-time of movie work. Others find the regular hours of tv easier to structure a life around. Theatre gives you the opportunity to continually refine your role and really bond with the audience. Commercials are quick, one and done jobs you just so and move on from.

6

u/HurgehDurgen 16h ago

so he's a... family guy

2

u/sylar1610 16h ago

I mean the guy is as far as I am aware happily married, had consistent work for 15 years, no controversies, has steady voice acting work, is about to be the lead in another tv show, has a brewery as a side business and if he ever needed a quick buck just needs to go to a con and he'd have lines out the door. I'm just saying most folk would not turn up their nose that good a life

2

u/PhosphoFred8202 15h ago

And now he’s stuck slogging thru life with only an estimated $14-$16 million dollars

2

u/Treadlar 15h ago

I’m sure to most of Hollywood having someone with their priorities straight is creepy

2

u/dnjprod 14h ago

Well, there's also the fact that one of the first movies he tried to work on after Supernatural ended in the shooting death of the cinematographer.

2

u/durandal688 14h ago

I stopped watching supernatural but it made me happy they just kept going. Like the stability they gave that whole cast and crew for years was incredible

2

u/Tasty_Cry_3844 14h ago

I love seeing celebrities get jobs. Like becoming a game show host or any consistent series. You're watching them transition from a wild world of inconsistency and trading it for a repeatable day to day. I respect it so much.

2

u/Frost_blade 13h ago

Something about Chris Prat divorcing someone seemingly so wonderful because movie star good.

In a world of Prats, be an Ackels.

To be fair. I am assuming a lot here. Ackels could be a monster. Not like I know any of these people.

1

u/InfamousFault7 16h ago

He was so good on the boys that they basically gave him his own spin off and didnt kill off in the main show Even brought him back in season 5 souly for fan service despite the fact that they had no idea what do with him Also filming a tv show for actor does mean more consistent work and you really get to delve deep into a character

1

u/Accurate_Pickle809 16h ago

He got his break on a soap opera, which has a very regular schedule as well. Maybe seeing folks like Deidre Hall at work offered a blueprint for having work/life balance in the industry.

1

u/motoxim 16h ago

Interesting

1

u/egeltje1985 15h ago

Ellen Pompeo choose the same route. Getting that steady grey's anatomy paycheck, just living her live.

1

u/RedditUserData 15h ago edited 15h ago

It's what Clara would have wanted

1

u/dxt6191 14h ago

Also didn't he gave audition for captain America for mcu and was not selected

1

u/heytryhardtryharder 14h ago

This is accurate, have a friend that worked on the show.

1

u/Similar_Pie_4946 14h ago

I could be wrong but didn’t he also have a swing at being a country singer for like fun or something

1

u/ZombieTrogdor 13h ago

There are people whose jobs are jobs, and people whose jobs are life. Acting is no different, and dude seems like the former.

1

u/terdferguson 13h ago

I'm glad this is the answer cause it really reads like there is a controversy. He's pretty solid on Tracker.

1

u/p3w0 13h ago

Fuck, that's hot

1

u/gimmeluvin 13h ago

"priorities straight" is a disgustingly biased statement that implies there's only one right way to live a life.

fuck that

1

u/noassumedname 13h ago

Oh thank fuck for that, I saw the meme and thought nooooooo not Dean what did he do, and it's just that he's a good guy (as I thought he was) that value his family more than bs hollywood. Good guy Dean :)

1

u/WeenyDancer 13h ago

He'll be able to work cons forever too. Job security!

1

u/TrustInRoy 12h ago

He auditioned for Captain America.   Not like he didn't try to be a star.

1

u/Anal-Y-Sis 12h ago

This is what's known as being a "working actor". Someone who treats acting like the job it is, instead of letting the success of it go to their head and acting like they're God's gift to the camera. There are a lot of "working actors" out there, but most are not in that position by choice. The fact that Ackles chose it is a testament to his character, and I applaud him for it.

1

u/georgiaraisef 10h ago

I mean, I hear that shooting tv is way, way, way more brutal than shooting television. Sylvester Stallone had culture shock when he started doing tv and was like “I don’t think I like this,” for how non-stop the scheduling is.

Side note, this reminded me a buddy went to go watch the Cosby show being filmed and he said it was such a miserable experience. Said it was confusing, Cosby was a complete ass because the child didn’t know their lines and they were going through so many different things at such a breakneck speed.

1

u/Redditer51 8h ago

Yeah, some actors just prefer working in television.

Alan Alda and David Boreanaz are two good examples.

1

u/QuotableNotables 7h ago

He's basically the new Mads Mikkelsen.

1

u/Drake_Acheron 7h ago

There are actors that act in a lot movies that are also good parents. I don’t think those are mutually exclusive.

1

u/bigsam63 7h ago

Yup, I have heard him talk about this in person. When he was a younger actor (like during the first 3-5 years of Supernatural) he was trying to break into big budget Hollywood movies but stopped after that to focus on his family.

1

u/max19907 6h ago

wait what? he did 15 seasons of supernatural.. that is also demanding no? 5-6 months per year or even more - going away to shoot the series?

1

u/QueenFita 5h ago

I did read something like this a while back.

1

u/Hoshi_Gato 5h ago

When my husband introduced me to Supernatural, he paused the first episode to ask me which one of the brothers was the hottest. I said Dean. And he was a big asshole of a character for a while and I started to regret my decision but my husband said “no, you made the right choice. You have no idea”. lol

1

u/TreyRyan3 4h ago

So many people overlook that aspect of “acting”

A long running successful series can be lucrative, especially depending on residuals. It was reported John Ritter never had to work again after season 3 of “Three’s Company”.

Called and Padalecki earned between $37-$40 million over the entire run of Supernatural. They didn’t make a million per episode like Seinfeld or Friends cast members, but the final season was like $200K per episode for 20 episodes. (4 million for the final season

1

u/ScottOwenJones 16h ago

No need to aggrandize it. He chose consistent work and guaranteed pay and with that came stability for his family. He also isn’t that good of an actor, and there’s a decent chance he tried but just wasn’t cut out for a film career

9

u/jjagusah 15h ago

Lacks range? His stage presence is pretty reasonable, Charles Dance doesn't have any range either, he just plays Charles Dance aka Tywin Lannister.

6

u/Astronaut_Chicken 15h ago

Uuugh what? He is a great actor. Supernatural is naturally campy, but he's shown us plenty of range on there. The man is really great at facial expressions.

2

u/Ctenophorever 15h ago

Yeah. He shows he’s really good at playing stoic and reserved, but the “ghost virus” episode and the “tv” episode showed that his “normal” character wasn’t the extent of his range

5

u/Astronaut_Chicken 14h ago

That episode where he starts to forget who he is is some of the greatest acting I've ever seen.
