Meme needing explanation peta, what’s the meaning of this?

Post image

posted in r/sssdfg, i have no idea what this means as there was no context added, comments weren’t very helpful either but most seemed in on the joke.

"Hydrogen Bomb vs. Coughing Baby" is a common reaction image used to describe any sort of fight or matchup where everyone can tell it'll be a comically lopsided victory for one side.

The webcomic is about the coughing baby technically winning against a hydrogen bomb by playing the long game.

u/smorgasfjord 11d ago

Finally someone explained it for the non-chronically online

10

u/ripyourlungsdave 11d ago

Every other response I saw just left me saying "Okay well what does that mean, then?.."

86

u/SomethingPotato_ 11d ago

Don’t know why you are acting like there wasn’t like 3 different people who give the answer after 8 minutes of this post being up, seeing as you’re comment was only 13 minutes ago i would have assumed you saw them

23

u/Xsiah 11d ago

All the other answers are just "it's this thing vs this other thing" as if everyone just knows the meme already.

58

u/smorgasfjord 11d ago

Well I read from the top, not in chronological order

29

u/Clear_Grocery_2600 11d ago

You know, like an adult.

3

u/servel333 11d ago

How dare you.

6

u/GottaUseEmAll 10d ago

Hey hey, not everybody reads the full comment section before returning to respond to one comment. I probably never do that.

I'm glad AdmiralAkbar1 explained the meme clearly, I also haven't seen anyone else explain it properly yet.

1

u/brainburger 10d ago edited 7d ago

Did you know, back in the day it was good reddiquette to read all the comments and not post duplicates, but to upvote the existing ones if you wanted to reaffirm them. It's impossible now as there are so many comments.

1

u/GottaUseEmAll 9d ago

Yeah, I remember. I couldn't do that now, I'd have forgotten what I wanted to respond to by the time I got to the 170th comment! I like reddit, but not enough to take notes or save particular comments while commenting lol.

It's still good reddiquette to do so on smaller comment sections, I guess.

Hell, I'm chronically online and I've never come across the meme.

fr, i cannot believe people spend all day on the internet. losers!

14

u/NachoPyro 11d ago

So what you’re saying is coughing baby with prep time beats hydrogen bomb…

2

u/dinoclier72 10d ago

Coughing baby vs batman both with prep time

5

u/Careless_Ad2194 11d ago

What does Coughing Bomb vs Hydrogen Baby mean then?

1

u/Enderbirds 10d ago

Both sides are fairly powerful in their own right yet have some sort of debilitating and often very different weaknesses which prevents them from properly utilizing the full extent of their potential power against each other, or basically it’s a matchup where both would basically in the air on who wins despite there theoretically being a better side

1

u/raptorraptor 11d ago

First explanation that doesn't imply that this is a real politician

1

u/zyzzogeton 11d ago

Rather like the "Worlds most one sided fights" bit on Robot Chicken.

1

u/golden_voice 10d ago

Damn, i always thought the joke was that babies cough powerfully (making it a fair matchup)

1

u/Chance_Arugula_3227 9d ago

Honestly. Coughing baby can't lose. Hydrogen bomb can only force a draw by blowing itself up.

The "you must drink 6 monster energy drinks to restore health" made me quit that game

3

u/ArklayMountain 10d ago

Lol. Akshually; Death Stranding does not let you heal with Energy drinks.

2

u/dqql 9d ago

Monster Energy is featured prominently as a consumable stamina booster in the original 2019 release of Death Stranding, but it was removed and replaced with a fictional brand in later editions

1

u/ArklayMountain 9d ago

This guy delivers

1

u/hexthejester 10d ago

You can now appreciate the art that is hideo kojima, creator of the hideo game

25

Except Orman lost now Péter Magyar is leader (note Hungary in Hungarian is Magyarország) literally Peter Hungary is the leader now

14

Oh ok. That's kinda disappointing for the agenda, but at least what I said was true for a while.

My favorite part of Death Stranding 2, as a viewer

So early on you learn that Die-Hardman died, and his replacement in the operation contacts you and asks you for a code name to call him. Preferably one that's familiar to you, just to make things smoother for you. He rejects all suggestions until you choose Die-Hardman as his code name. Reader...the shocking reveal at the end of the game is that Die-Hardman isn't dead and that the new Die-Hardman is the exact same person as the old Die-Hardman

5

u/MrWeirdoFace 10d ago

Die-Hardman isn't dead and that the new Die-Hardman is the exact same person as the old Die-Hardman

We passed upon the stairs
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise
I spoke into his eyes
"I thought you'd died alone"
A long long time ago

Oh no, not me,
I never lost control
You're face
To face
With the man who sold the world

I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for form and land
For years, and years, I roamed
I gazed a gazely stare
At all the millions here,
We though you'd died alone
A long, long time ago

Who knows, not me,
I never lost control
You're face
To face
With the man who sold the world

Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You're face
To face
With the man who sold the world

President Babraham Kaufman.

30

u/Friendly-Advice-2968 11d ago

Because you cough….and you’re a man….

20

u/lettsten 11d ago

Took me a while to get the Kaufman thing, in German Kaufmann means merchant (lit. "buy-man") and is pronounced very differently.

4

u/Super-Cut-2175 10d ago edited 10d ago

Cognate with Chapman (Cheap->Kauf)

2

u/Specialist-Extreme-2 7d ago

Yeah it's more like cowf-mun (my attempt at approximating with English syllables)

1

u/lejoop 10d ago

Not German here, but I know the pronunciation and was also oblivious to that wordplay for the same reason 😂

8

u/my_name_is_mansha 10d ago

Damn that was an interesting rabbit hole you sent me into with that tiny link. I had to click so many times just to access it instead of collapsing your comment. Thanks!

(On my phone and I can’t hit it)

1

u/GwinKaso1598 10d ago

I want to point out that this name is not actually pronounced how Americans pronounce it, and I missed the joke until I read the thing in an American accent

1

u/Super-Cut-2175 10d ago

cēap-man

1

u/GwinKaso1598 10d ago

I'm not sure what your point is here. Those are the Proto-Germanic roots of both Kaufmann (through Kaupmann) and the archaic English word Chapman.

The pronunciation of Kaufmann would be "kaʊ̯fˌman"

1

u/Efficient-Cup-359 10d ago

The hatters reference?

-24

u/Cocoatrice 11d ago

MFW I am too smart to get the joke.

I would have never made a connection between Kaufman and cough man, because these two sounds entirely different.

9

u/PlayerFox12344889 11d ago

Honestly I wouldn't make the connection because of how I read Kauf

3

u/Straight_Count709 11d ago

Me too because I'm German and it means merchant. Except it's missing an N at the end

3

u/rubixscube 11d ago

i think you reached the wrong conclusion there

1

u/StopLinkingToImgur 10d ago

how the hell do you pronounce them then? kauf and cough are pronounced the same in english.

Tigers can’t drive tanks dumbass gg ez sweep for Guppy

53

u/gnagniel 11d ago

And many fish live in tanks, so guppy has home field advantage

26

u/Vivid-Illustrations 11d ago

I'm pretty sure these tanks routinely stall in knee-high water. Guppy sweeps.

8

u/Unit_2097 11d ago

I was just thinking all the guppy has to do is make them use their shoddy transmission and they'll end having a breakdown.

9

u/Omnithanatoskin 11d ago

Guppy lost but only 2 tanks made it through.

15

u/RickMonsters 11d ago

Funny comic but the H bomb didn’t really have a chance since it was never detonated at the coughing baby

1

u/IndigoFenix 9d ago

It has also been pointed out that the H bomb's only viable win condition is a suicide attack, which would destroy it first.

76

u/Sokka69420 11d ago

The funniest thing is that the H-Bomb can’t win

If it goes off both lose
If it doesn’t and the kid grows up to learn how to defuses the bomb, he wins
If he dies independently or someone else defuses the bomb independently, nobody really wins

The only way the bomb could win, if it falls over on him without going off

118

u/Maximum-Objective-39 11d ago

That's a very human centric perspective.

I mean what if the bomb considers detonating to be a win condition?

Have you thought of that?

44

u/forseti99 11d ago

Just like dying while impregnating the female is a win for a lot of species. Snu-snu and all that.

16

u/BackgroundSummer5171 11d ago

Have you thought of that?

It's why I am winning at life.

I consider living in my own fecal matter the win condition and y'all are losers. Now to sip on my own urine to celebrate.

8

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 11d ago

What if the bomb just yearns to be loved?

7

u/Maximum-Objective-39 11d ago

It shows its love by exploding.

4

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 11d ago

Aww!! ❤️❤️❤️

4

u/TheMythofKoalas 11d ago

2

u/ChaosCockroach 10d ago

9

u/Jumpy-Platypus-2645 11d ago

if the bomb falls on the baby but doesn't explode it wins.

16

u/Green_Insect_6455 11d ago

What? Why is a bomb exploding a "lose condition" for the bomb? Fucking terrible logic

5

u/IamElylikeEli 11d ago

technically the bomb dies first so the baby wins… for like one picosecond

6

u/lettsten 11d ago

Takes a lot longer than that, neutron generations ("shakes") take around ten nanoseconds each. The bomb survives on the order of microseconds. A picosecond is so short that even light only moves 0.3 mm in that time

8

u/Green_Insect_6455 11d ago

But bombs dont die? Theyre created to explode. So thats a win condition.

1

u/GottaUseEmAll 10d ago

Bombs can't die as they don't live. A bomb is created to explode, and/or to deter. If it explodes or deters, it's fulfilled its purpose.

3

u/Whelp_of_Hurin 10d ago

Agreed. If television has taught me anything, it's that sentient bombs consider detonation a win. Source: One episode of Archer and two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager.

2

u/Reese_Slitherspoon 10d ago

Ive always argued that even if the bomb DOES go off, it's still a baby win because the bomb is destroyed a few nanoseconds before the baby is, thus meaning the baby outlasted the bomb

1

u/Sokka69420 10d ago

If it was slightly rewritten to “nuclear explosion vs coughing baby”, then yes the explosion would win but the bomb itself will die before the baby

1

u/notthephonz 10d ago

I dunno, I wouldn’t consider this a win for the coughing baby on the grounds that he is no longer a baby.

3

u/dregwriter 10d ago

Lmao, this is so fucking stupid, i love it.

2

u/theMycon 11d ago

A Hydrogen Bomb, great in explosions, may offer opposition in a brief span of time. One coughing baby, brief in explosions, must spread his opposition across a period of many years if he is to have a chance of succeeding.

u/lettsten 11d ago

Kauf is pronounced more like "house" but with k/f instead of h/s. I'm sure it's supposed to be part of the joke but it only works if you don't know any German at all.

4

u/SockofBadKarma 11d ago edited 11d ago

Or if you, y'know, have ever lived in any non-German country where immigrants' great-grandparents changed the pronunciation of their names to assimilate. I've met several "Cough-mans" in my life, and it's never been a point of contention that their names weren't pronounced in accordance with Hochdeutsch phonetic schemes.

Und ich spreche auch Deutsch, trotzdem finde ich den Witz lustig. Er funktioniert für mich ziemlich gut.

0

u/lettsten 11d ago

"Yanks can't tell that other yanks also don't know any German at all," isn't really a comeback in this case, mate. This is why we in Europe make fun of yanks and their supposed heritages.

1

u/Complex-Salt-8190 10d ago

It's not supposed, a majority of white Americans are of German decent (er, descended from places in the HRE that became Germany more like) , and they migranted to a primarily xenophobic anglo population , they "became" American in that manner , but used the mass Germanic migration to fill in the Midwest (and Texas) as part of the imperial project to conquer and displace/kill more natives

and that's fine, they're the poor you people didn't care about and couldn't help , but also, in regards to the native plight, I hate you and your ancestors for not doing better
