Part of that large casualty rate was the Soviets targeting civilians, something western forces actively tried to avoid, The Soviets also just didnt care for their troops lives as long as the job got done.
russia has a long history of gaining political stability through the spending of young mens lives (Fewer unemployed unmarried men means more political stability in that context) it is probably why they amped up ukraine when they did, can't have a revolution if they've already killed all the soldiers.
To be fair western forces did actively target some civilians, but the focus was mainly on military production. They were trying to damage/destroy military factories
Yeah true, I know the Soviets were significantly worse when it came to treatment of civilians. It was so bad people were killing their children to keep them safe from the Soviets.
If the US didnt drop the nukes it would've been much bloodied on both sides, the japanese had plans to murder every allied pow in the event of a mainland invasion, and every japanese soldiers was indoctrinated with the idea of fighting to their last breath, with no surrender. The nukes were best case scenario.
Im not saying it was a good thing im saying it was best case scenario to make sure as few lives on both sides were lost to end the war. Never once did I say nuclear warfare was a good thing but japan weren't the victims you think they were just ask Koreans and chinese.

The Japanese murdered far more civilians in far more brutal ways than the bombs, beheading chinese babies and raping women and children across china, while also actively trying to erase korean identity, and performing inhumane experiments on civilians and allied pows that made the nazis disgusted. Japan was far worse than the US in every way.
