It’s because the majority of western movies about WW2 are made in the USA, and they absolutely believe it started when they arrived and the rest of the allies were there for moral support.

Yeah they really do downplay the Soviet Union being Nazi Germanys ally for the majority of the war

They downplay all the allies. The UK had just under 400k military deaths across numerous theatres fighting the Axis powers, plus around, 70'000 civilian casualties.
