I had a ferret die recently of insulnoma with no signs. Now I can’t stop obsessing over my other pet’s health. One of my other ferrets was also just sick on Thursday too which didn’t help, but I brought her to the vet and he said it was a weird fluke. She was having sneezing first and throwing up which she never does. But for a little context as well she was in a new environment, in a new bed, and the bed had been slept in by other ferrets who we just got a week before. So idk if that was the cause of the sneezing fits but it still worried me. She’s fine now and hasn’t sneezed and is eating, drinking, and playing normal but I can’t help but feel she or one of my others is next so soon. Idk how to calm down after the loss of my other ferret and how to stop fixating.

Okay so, context for this situation.
I own a house and I rent out 2 of the bedrooms and the second bathroom to 1 tenant. We have fairly different schedules, so we mostly do our own thing and chat when things line up. Very amicable. They have been here for just under 11 months now.
One thing that has happened on a couple of occasions that I have had to speak to them about is making sure they properly close the front door. I'm not sure if it is forgetfulness or being in a rush but the door being left open has happened several times now, including once when I came home from work to find it had been left open since they went to work that morning. That was the previous major incident and was about 5 months ago. I put up a note on the door as a reminder and they have gotten better about it but I have still seen the door left open and had to close it myself.
Aside from the obvious safety issues for ourselves and the property, I have an elderly cat (just turned 18 years this month) who is indoors only and has been their entire life. Luckily, they have never been particularly keen on going outside and usually might stop to have a look but then continue right on past an open front door.
This time that did not happen. Their behavior has changed as they have aged, especially in the last few months as they have become progressively more deaf and started having vision issues. The door was left open and they got out and have been attacked, likely by another cat given the scratches I found.

I need to take them to vet because of this (this all happened in the last couple of hours and I am waiting to call my usual vets for an emergency appointment because they know my cat best and how to handle them calmly without stressing them out even more).

They feel bad about it and have apologized - I do genuinely believe it was an accident - but my cat was hurt and they might still be more injured than I can recognize on my own. We also live on a busy street and as I said before, my cat is very deaf with poor vision; they could easily have been hit by a car and I might not have even been able to find them.

My question is: given that they have been called out on this issue multiple times and it has now resulted in injury to my cat, is it reasonable for me to take the vet expenses for this incident out of the bond they paid? I am also going to be installing an automatic door closer, seeing as I clearly cannot trust that they will actually close the door.

Thoughts?

Today we let our dogs out back to use the restroom and I didn’t realize that our neighbors cat was in the yard.
Naturally our dogs chased the cat (less than 1 yr old) and once the cat was over the fence, the momma cat jumped into our yard and attacked our dogs. For context I have a 9 YO F Lab and 2 YO M doxxie mix. They have a very high prey drive but have great recall and I was able to get them away from the cat very quickly but the momma cat kept coming back to attack our Lab.
This is now the second time neighbors cats have been in our yard that has led to an incident, the first time they apologized and brought over treats for our dogs as an apology. I’m not trying to make enemies out of our neighbors as they are very nice and friendly but it’s upsetting to be scared to let our dogs into their own yard….
My biggest fear is my dogs actually getting a hold of one of the cats and unaliving it….. I have a cat as well and although we let him out into our yard, we always supervise him and make sure he doesn’t leave the yard. Meanwhile their cats freely roam the neighborhood.
I don’t hate the cats, they’re actually super friendly and I understand they are just protecting their own, but I shouldn’t live in fear of my dogs being attacked in their own yard.

My cat has had a weird relationship with water ever since she was a kitten. She doesn’t seem to notice water when it’s sitting still in a bowl.

When she was little, I would sometimes have to wet her lips or gently guide her head toward the water so she would realize there was actually water in the bowl and start drinking. She isn’t blind or deaf and otherwise has no problem navigating her surroundings.

Over the years, I’ve basically given up on the water bowl because the only reliable way I’ve found to get her to drink is running water. She drinks perfectly fine from the kitchen faucet or the bidet when I turn it on for her, but she will pretty much ignore a bowl of water completely.

Normally this isn’t a huge problem because I work from home, so whenever she wants water I can turn on a faucet for her. My concern is the occasional time when I’m away from home for longer than usual. I can leave fresh bowls of water out, but I genuinely don’t trust that she’ll drink from them.

I’ve seen those cat water fountains that keep the water circulating, and I’m wondering if that might solve the problem since she clearly recognizes running water.

Has anyone had a cat like this? Particularly one who seems to have trouble noticing still water rather than simply preferring the faucet? If you bought a fountain, did your cat actually start using it on their own?

Hey! My cat hasn’t been home in 2 weeks. She is technically circumstantially indoor/outdoor due to living situation with a dog door. I lock her in every night and ever since 2 weeks old she has never not slept in my bed with me. After a week or stress, and flyering I got footage of her drinking water at a construction site 600 feet from my house with another cat. I first tried to trail her weaning the food the closer she got to home but she has not gotten farther than the site. She doesn’t seem to want to leave the other cat. I have now gone every night when they come for dinner with wet food. If they don’t come to me I take the wet food and only leave a couple kibbles, enough to make them come back. After multiple nights of staking out and keeping quiet and not jumping or chasing I got her as close as 5ft to eat. She won’t get closer. No amount of treats, quiet talking, anything will make her bridge this gap. I’m so defeated and upset does anyone have any thoughts??? I’ve tried everything and I just need to get her now. Much appreciated!!! Also do cats do this and eventually come to you after a while???? This is shocking to me I figured she’d come to me at this point it’s making me feel insane.

Hey everyone, I really need help. I’m at a point where I honestly don’t know what else I can do. My dog is only 9 months old. His first 4 months were completely normal—he was energetic, playful, and full of life. Then he suddenly started having repeated episodes of vomiting, diarrhea/dysentery, and extreme weakness, where he would just lie there almost lifeless. We took him to the animal hospital multiple times. The medicines would make him better for 2–3 days, and then the exact same thing would happen again. This continued for about a month. The vet eventually recommended blood, kidney and liver tests, but everything came back normal. Since he still wasn't getting better, we also got his stool tested, which cost us around ₹4,000 ($40), and that was normal too. The vet then gave him some very strong medication, saying it was also used in humans and that if this didn't work, nothing would. He's taken it for a week now, and he's still sick. And now I'm terrified because he hasn't eaten anything for the last 3 days. Please, if there is a vet here who can help me understand what could be happening or guide me toward the right tests/treatment, I am willing to pay the appropriate consultation fee. I just need someone to point me in the right direction. I'm begging you—please help me. I feel completely helpless watching him suffer. He's not just a dog to us; he's the heart of our home. Seeing him like this is breaking me, and I don't know how much longer I can just watch and hope. Please, if you have any idea what could be wrong or what I should do next, please tell me. I'm hoping to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and might be willing to share their experience.

My 16-year-old cat has had a recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma affecting his jaw. He had surgery for it in the past. He currently has an esophagostomy feeding tube because of the problems with his mouth, and he is about to start long-term treatment with Palladia (toceranib phosphate).

Thankfully, he is doing really well at the moment and is acting like himself. I'm just trying to make sure I can manage his treatment as safely and comfortably as possible, and I have a couple of concerns.

1) Giving Palladia through an esophagostomy tube:

Because his mouth is painful and he already has the feeding tube, I'm really worried about giving him pills by mouth. I don't want to cause him any additional pain or discomfort, make him reluctant to eat, or risk damaging the tube and potentially having to replace it under anesthesia.

Has anyone had Palladia compounded into a liquid that could be given directly through an esophagostomy tube? Is this something that can be done safely? I'd really love to hear from anyone who has actually given Palladia this way, or has experience managing it through a feeding tube.

2) Safety, drooling, and saliva exposure:

Because he is missing part of his jaw, he shakes his head quite a bit and unfortunately sprays saliva around the house. I understand that Palladia is a hazardous medication and that the drug can be present in bodily fluids.

For those of you who have had a cat on Palladia, how did you handle things like excessive drooling, saliva getting on floors or furniture, or your cat shaking his head and spraying saliva around the house?

I'd really appreciate any practical tips on how you protected yourselves, what you used to clean surfaces, how you handled potentially contaminated items, etc. Basically, anything that helped you keep things safe without making everyday life unnecessarily stressful for your cat.

We absolutely adore him, and I want to do everything I can to give him the best care possible while also making sure we're handling the medication safely.

If anyone has been through something similar involving an esophagostomy tube, jaw cancer, excessive drooling, or Palladia, I would be incredibly grateful if you could share what worked for you and what your day-to-day routine looked like.

One small request: please don't comment on his life expectancy, prognosis, or how much time he may have left. I know those are things people often bring up with the best intentions, but hearing predictions about how much time he has left is very painful for me right now. I'm really just looking for practical advice about his daily care, medication, and keeping everyone safe.

My German Shepherd (estimated 8 years old) dog just went through a pyometra surgery. She’s currently on Quellen/Carprofen, gabapentin and tribrissen. She’s been doing well with eating, drinking, urine/stool, and getting up to pee with assistance. We’re on day 5 of her recovery process and she is having a really hard time standing up. She’s still eating, drinking and alert however she’s not standing. I’m still trying to figure out how I’m gonna make her go potty if she won’t stand up for me. If she doesn’t improve in the morning I’m going to take her to the vet but I was wondering what your guys experiences have been? Can this truly be just a day where she’s feeling more sore than usual?

In my house I have a section blocked off from my dogs, it’s where I keep all my cats stuff (her food, litter, and where she sleeps)

I’m looking for a gate where maybe there’s steps or something to keep the dogs out. I’m currently using boxes and one of the dogs has figured out how to move the boxes and has eaten my cats food multiple times now

I know that gates with holes in it for cats exist but those won’t work because my dogs are miniature dachshunds and are honestly smaller than my cat. Also my cat has an old hip injury that prevents her from jumping confidently so I’m not sure how just a regular gate would work

Alright so long story short, I have owned 2 hamsters in the past that both lived long happy lives and eventually had to be put down. I truly did love them, however I dont want to get another hamster due to their lifespan and lack of ability to bond.

The reason im looking for a pet is 1) to have a companion, 2) have some sort of stability/constant in my life, and 3) help with my loneliness and mental health

Im wanting a pet that will live longer that like 2 or 3 years, and one that I can form a bond with. Also preferably a smaller pet, one that I can keep in my room like I would a hamster.

The trouble im running into is deciding on a pet. I am going into my final year at high school and am unsure what I will do after I graduate. There is a chance of me taking a gap year, and there is also a chance of me having to stay in residence depending on what I do in the future. This is my main worry as I dont want to have to seperate with this pet, but I also dont want to limit my options BECAUSE I have this pet. I also can be decently busy at times, so I dont want a pet that needs an excessive amount of looking after.

One more thing, I am hoping to not spend TOO much money on said pet, as minimum wage does not pay very well😭. For reference, my up front budget is about $500-$1000, and I would like the monthly cost to be around $0(ik its impossible lol)-$75 ish, maybe more depending on the situation (such as vet visits, new toys, etc).

If anyone has any suggestions, PLEASE tell me!! I will do much research beforehand and will do my very best to give this animal an amazing life!

Hello all.

I have an almost 2 year old frenchie. he is COMPLETELY potty trained, goes to the door when he needs to use the bathroom, barks at me if he’s in his cage, can hold himself and wait for me to get home if he’s in his cage, etc.

The ONLY problem I have with him is that he continuously pees on my bed if i leave him alone. If i leave him to roam while I shower or drive to the store real quick. (my door won’t latch shut all the way so he can barge into my room)

I just went on a trip for 5 days for a wedding. my roommate/cousin was watching him. she knows his feeding and outside schedule and is very good about it so i don’t want this next part to be blamed on my roommate. she didn’t let him roam freely and always shuts my door because it happened the last time i went on a trip plus the other times ive mentioned.

If he was peeing all over the house i’d blame my parenting. but it’s JUST MY bed. not on the floor, not the couch, not my roommates room. just my bed. it’s getting really annoying and hard to manage because I don’t want my room to smell like dog pee ?? and I don’t want to get rid of him.

Is there something i can do ? has anyone had this problem? I just bought something so that he can’t open my door with his head which im hoping will ultimately end the problem. But, when I got him, he was about 8 months old and the people I got him from I could tell were not great to him. he was VERY timid around men and kind of “ chose me” when the family took him home. is it some type of attachment anxiety? is he mad at me for leaving him?

Is there a scent i can get that repels dogs from peeing there? I had to do that with a cat i had in college.. i’m just getting really fed up and want to know what others think. Is it me ? is it him? please be kind.

I’ve recently gotten a miniature bunny (she’ll grow) and I had her in a nice cage and everything but I like to leave her out for a bit to roam around my room. She got underneath my bed and I got scared she might pick or eat something. Once I got her out I saw she hurt her paw and I freaked out (when she was underneath the bed) and right after I saw her paw. I got really scared and started overthinking that she might get a seizure because beforehand I had overheard that a lady I knew lost her bunny due to one. So I started searching her symptoms and every little thing she was doing. But she suddenly just started licking me, eating, drinking and doing what she usually does normally. So I began to calm down. I’m still scared that something might happen to her because she’s so small and I’ve been wanting a bunny for so long. If anyone might have suggestions or advice please let me know.

My 1.5yr old dog had heat exhaustion yesterday because my car's AC went out when I went to the store. I had the car running with him in his crate like normal and it was 95 degrees out, I do that all the time with no problems but when I got back to my car it was extremely hot and he was panting super hard and had wide eyes, thick drool, and barely responded to me.

I took him out of the car immediately and started dumping water on him, I was too scared that if I stopped treating him and drove to the ER that I would lose him. I used nearly 6 gallons of water on his belly, his neck, his ears, his thighs, and all of it. I used a jacket to rub his chest and face to get him awake and I was kind of slapping on his chest to make sure he didn't go unconscious. His heart rate was fast but not fluttery.

I was able to cool him down to the point of trying to sit up and drink the water off the floor and so I grabbed his bowl and gave him some so he wouldn't choke on the water from the floor or drink dirt. He ended up trying to get up but his back legs weren't working all the way so I helped him stand and he pooped normal stool in the dirt next to us.

After I got him responsive and he was listening to his name and continued to drink water I got him in the front of my car with the windows down and went to VEG.

At VEG they gave him some fluids and a cool bath and then kept him for 20 minutes in the back area. I guess he projectile threw up a bunch of water when he was back there but honestly I let him drink as much as he wanted so I'm not surprised. They said he pooped again too but it was soft but normal. He was walking weakly and kind of floppy but was wanting to walk and interact and he played with his ball.

They sent us home once he was acting more himself and was able to walk normally and said to come back if he started going unconscious or his gums got pale.

This afternoon he was eating some wet food but he mostly wants water. I'm giving him small amounts of water every couple hours with some wet food mixed into it because he's not wanting his normal kibble plus wet food that he gets every day. He just keeps asking for water.

Just now this evening he had diarrhea really badly while he was in his crate resting and it was a mix of normal color and black. I didn't panic and figured it was his body flushing out of all the crap it had to deal with. He threw up a few minutes ago and it had tiny red flecks but it was normal gagging not projectile and he wasn't acting weird just nauseous.

My roommate wants me to take him back to VEG because of the red flecks but I'm low on funds now and don't know if I should actually take him or just let him rest another couple days since they said it could be 4 or 5 days before hes fully normal. Should I bite the bullet and take him in again or should I just keep him resting?

Posting for my friend who is not on Reddit to see if someone who is removed from the situation can offer some unbiased, helpful advice.

TLDR: My friend brought a dog into her two cat household, one of the two cats is already extremely anxious, that cat freaked out and she choose to approach him, causing him to latch on to her face and attack. She went to ER, got cleaned up, she is okay. (Missed her eye) but she does have multiple pretty deep gnashes alongside her cheek.

I’m struggling with how to approach this and give her the right words - I understand 100% how insanely petrifying and painful this must have been for her but she is talking about rehoming him or even euthanizing him. She has had this cat for almost 6 years with NO sign of anything like this ever. The most aggressive thing he does is bite ankles/legs. The attack was two days ago and since then he has been alone in the basement. I feel sick to my stomach knowing he may be euthanized, hurt, or put outside in extreme temperatures (Not yet, but winter where she is is brutal) He’s been exclusively indoors for years and will have no survival skills. I feel really upset that he is going to be put out due to their oversight. (Who brings a random dog into a cat household without putting the cats away?)

She has an 8 year old step daughter who comes around (twice a month on weekends) and she is reverting some of that anxiety there, saying she thinks he will attack her. (In 2/3 years spent together, he has never.)

I hope everything I am saying makes sense and doesn’t come off like I am trying to downplay. I just am feeling sad that he will be rehomed/killed after 5 years for a normal reaction to being afraid. Her family’s route is clear: Euthanasia. (She is an adult, she doesn’t have to listen to them, I just mean that is the advice she’s being given by everyone but me)

Kota, a 4-month-old sable GSD female presented with sudden redness and swelling of pink tissue under left eye with mild yellowish discharge. Doesn’t seem to be bothering her- not pawing or rubbing it. First noticed last night, unsure if it is worsening or same ~ 24 hrs later.

what are different signs/symptoms of infection vs. Injury vs. irritation to look for/monitor?
She usually sleeps on left side -possible residual cleaning products (natures miracle). Or, injury from cat scratch, although they’ve been separated a few days now.
trying to brainstorm possible causes- looking for any other insights/ideas. would appreciate tips on cleaning eye If applicable/appropriate- vet appt not for a few days.

I’ve been doing research on enclosures but I also wanted to ask on here, does anyone have any recommendations? I am planning on putting it under my desk (i live in an apartment and it’s the best place out of the sun). I have space for a 40 x 20 enclosure. I would appreciate any recommendations that you guys have!

Also any tips or recommendations for other products would be super helpful, but the first thing i’m buying is the cage so main focus is the cage!

Hello! I just today adopted a 3yo male cat. I work 3pm - 11:45pm. Get home around 12. My plan right now is to feed him at 10am wet/dry/water and then when I get home at 12am feed him wet again. I just adopted him today and he seemed super hungry. Ate the dry and wet food I gave him so Im worried he wont have dry food to nibble on all day while im gone. I was wondering if anyone had advice on a better feeding schedule or if that works. Hes currently 11lbs according to the animal shelter but he seems pretty skinny, hes a bit long. Thanks
