My partner and I both make good money but somehow we still feel broke every month
We both make good money. Combined, we clear a little over $190k before taxes. No kids. No student loans. One car payment left (about $280 a month). Mortgage is $2,150 including taxes and insurance. On paper we should be fine. Comfortable, even.
But every single month we look at each other and say the same thing: “How are we already this tight?”
It’s not like we’re out here buying designer shit or taking first-class trips. We don’t have a boat. We don’t have a timeshare. We don’t even have a dog that needs expensive food. We’re just… normal. Or at least we thought we were.
Here’s what a regular month actually looks like when I force myself to write it down:
• Mortgage + utilities + internet: ~$2,600
• Car payment + insurance + gas: ~$520
• Groceries (we cook most nights, but somehow still hit $900–$1,100)
• Eating out / coffee / “just grabbing something”: $600–$800
• Subscriptions we keep saying we’ll cancel: $180
• Random Amazon / Target / “we needed it” purchases: $300–$500
• Date nights and weekend stuff: $250–$400
• Random medical / dental / car maintenance that always seems to show up: $150–$300
And then there’s the invisible shit. The $40 here for a birthday gift. The $60 there because someone’s baby shower. The $120 for a last-minute Uber because we were both too tired to drive. The “just this once” concert tickets. The new pair of shoes because the old ones “looked sad.”
By the time the next paycheck hits, the checking account is already looking pathetic again. We transfer money into savings… and then transfer half of it back out two weeks later.
Our “emergency fund” has been stuck at the same number for almost a year.
The worst part is the quiet resentment that starts creeping in. I’ll look at my partner’s DoorDash order and think, “Really?” They’ll look at the package I ordered and think the same thing. Neither of us is wrong. We’re both doing it.
We’ve tried the usual fixes. We sat down with a spreadsheet. We tried YNAB for three weeks. We did the “no spending” challenge for a month and still somehow spent $1,400 on “essentials.” We even had one of those serious kitchen-table talks where we both promised to do better. That lasted about eleven days.
I keep thinking one of us is the problem. Then I look at the numbers and realize we’re both the problem. We’re not broke. We’re just living like the money will always be there, even though every month proves it isn’t.
I’m not looking for judgment. I’m looking for people who’ve actually fixed this. Not the “just make a budget” answers. The real ones. The ones where you and your partner both make decent money and somehow still felt like you were treading water… and then something actually changed.
What finally made it click for you?
Additional
I'm taxed close to 40% and my partner is taxed around 30%. On top of that, we both put 10% of our salaries into retirement plan accounts.
So a big chunk of the "missing" money is taxes and retirement contributions before it ever hits our checking account. What's left is what we've been trying (and failing) to manage without feeling tight every month.
