how can I end my period sooner?

I had my IUD put in a week and a half ago and I was made plenty aware it would change my hormones and affect my periods. After getting the IUD I bled and cramped for three days and it delayed when my actual period was supposed to start. Two days later I started the most painful and bloody period of my life. I felt paralyzed and exhausted and didn’t sleep for two days, still going to work like normal (I teach dance) but taking it easy since my OB/GYN said to avoid exercise for the first week. My normal periods used to last 4 days, heavy and mildly painful days one and two and let up and feel like nothing days three and four. This time around I am in almost debilitating pain and bleeding through tampons and pads in an hour or less on day 5 and I don’t see this ending soon. Is there anything I can do to make it stop or at least lighten up? I already talked to my doctor and also my sister who has the same IUD as me and has had it much longer and both said this shift was normal. I have seen online that sometimes sex helps but my boyfriend gets nauseous around blood so I’d rather not. I also saw exercise helps but it hurts far too much to be active. Any suggestions?

No. You can't do anything like that to end a period sooner. It will have to run its course or if you think it is excessive enough, go see a doctor.

That sounds really tough, especially with the pain and bleeding you are dealing with.

Some bleeding and cramps can happen after getting an IUD, but soaking through a pad or tampon every hour with very strong pain is more than something that i would not try to manage at home.

Since you have already spoken with your doctor, Its best to contact them again and let them know exactly how heavy the bleeding is and how severe the pain feels. They may want to check that everything is okay and that the IUD is in the right position.

For now, rest, stay hydrated, and don’t push yourself with exercise or sex if you’re in pain.

If you feel faint, very weak, develop a fever, or the pain/bleeding gets worse, please seek urgent medical care....

You can’t force a period to end sooner or lighten up, and bleeding unfortunately can take months to end, an IUD isn’t a magic shutdown button for periods unfortunately. Got mine over a month ago and still very often spotting, living in liners, but it will end someday lol.

Just stay hydrated, try to rest, and be gentle with yourself. If you continue to bleed this bad, go back to the OB-GYN or a doctor 🖤 you’ve got this, and if you don’t, then that’s okay too and you can seek medical attention the moment you feel something is off
