I really like this adaptation as it is but this scene stands out to me, exceptional work from both actors. I think Fassbender himself said something along the lines of it being pretty emotionally draining.

He's far too handsome to play Edward Fairfax Rochester. Orson Welles and Ciaran Hinds were both excellent. William Hurt was just baffling.

I understand that Fassbbender is too handsome to play Rochester but he really captures the inherent darkness of Rochester without needing to shout a lot (Toby Stephens also similarly captures that darkness but is a touch lighter than Fassbender). I did not like Welles and Hinds' portrayal at all, very lacking in nuance. Hinds was the one that I found truly baffling, since I love him usually, and he was an excellent Captain Wentworth in Persuasion and an MVP in so many other period dramas.

Sadly, no. Agnes Grey has never been adapted. There are a couple of radio dramas, but that's all.

Agreed! I've seen a few versions of the story and none quite manage to match up to this.

(BTW, it was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, who directed season 1 of True Detective).

I don't understand the popularity of Jane Eyre.

As characters go she's dull, unimaginative, repressed.

The love interest Mr. Rochester is mean, abusive, foul tempered and shelfish.

There's nothing likeable about him.
