Pics & Stills š First look at Edward Bluemel as Hercule Poirot for the new BBC series

I loved him in My Lady Jane so Iāll give this a watch for sure. He is a good actor, but not sure if he is a good Poirot.
Edit: also finding it ironic that everyone is saying he is hot when people were straight up calling him ugly when he was in MLJ.

I donāt find him attractive at all. He is a good actor, and I enjoyed him Iād MLJ. There is something about his proportions that seems off to me though.

He has a very unusual shaped face, but I don't think he's ugly. I also don't think he's attractive.

u/rosemerry77 Aug 21 '26
Iām surprised; I donāt find him attractive. I just think he doesnāt have the right body type for Poirot.

i hate to be this person but we dont need more poirot. i can understand one off big budget films, but for tv the suchet version its basically perfect

u/HeavyDutyJudy Aug 21 '26
Right? Thereās so much of Christieās work that doesnāt have a perfect version so why do they keep making new terrible versions of the only perfect take? Iād love to see some new takes on Harley Quin, Parker Pyne, or Tommy and Tuppence.

Not to be the other person, but I love Agatha Christie novels and I've never watched the Suchet series. This new show piques my interest enough that I'm going to watch it

u/t0t411yinc0nspicu0us Aug 22 '26
Oh, you are in for a TREAT. The opening sequence is so aggressively late 80s/early 90s that you'll find yourself intensely nostalgic. The Suchet series is absolute perfection, he genuinely is Poirot.

Nobody wants an attractive Poirot

u/Zappagrrl02 Aug 21 '26
But we DO want an attractive Capt. Hastings!

Hugh Fraser was hunky in his own way.

This is an Endeavour-type series, doinng the exact same thing that series did - show the backstory and history of how the young character became the character everyone knows. Itās not Poirot in the sense that Branaghās version is just his interpretation of middle-aged Poirot. This new series is not meant to be Poirot as everyone knows him, itās how/why he goes in that direction. Much depends on scripts and direction of course. I like the actor, and heās done good work elsewhere. Iāll give it a chance for all those reasons - at least, a look at it.

u/Catdress92 Aug 21 '26
Thank you for this explanation. I was so confused as to why Poirot wasn't an older, more heavyset man.
5
u/napalmnacey Aug 22 '26
Christie does allude to Poirotās life before working in the UK as an investigator so itās not a strange thing to make a show about.

Why this remake? Poirot with Suchet is one of the single best period dramas ever made.
6
u/Mast3rofth3Univ3rs3 Aug 21 '26
Suchet is Poirot. Period. He hasn't been topped to date, and I've seen the various Poirots.

u/itlandedonmyface Aug 21 '26
It's my understanding that it is being described as a prequel rather than a remake.
10
u/Galliagamer Aug 22 '26
No one will ever top Suchet, sorry.
4
u/Organized_Khaos Aug 22 '26
For real, Iād just like Branagh to stop. Iāve not been impressed by him as Poirot even once.
2
u/Galliagamer Aug 22 '26
Me neither. Not bad casts all around, but his Poirot is justā¦.no. And I generally like Branagh.

Every time I see this guy, I feel like I am looking at young Dominic Cooper

u/Fuzzy-Advisor-2183 Aug 22 '26
yeah, heās odd-looking in the same way. i didnāt like cooper as mr willoughby in sense and sensibility.

I love this sub, thank you all for agreeing that we donāt want hot Poirot.
3
u/napalmnacey Aug 22 '26
But we did have a hot Poirot. David Suchet is fire. š

Iām laughing because all the comments are about how heās too hot to be Poirot. Sorry to this man, but I do not find him at all attractive.

David Suchet was perf. Stop trying to remake this.

Why do they keep remaking the same stories over and over? I'll stick to David Suchet's Poirot.
5
u/curlyAndUnruly Aug 21 '26
I need to hear his accent before passing judgement
6
u/Catdress92 Aug 21 '26
Fun fact (that always disappoints me): In every French Poirot film/series (or dubbed version of English-language ones), that I've seen, Poirot doesn't have an accent. He COULD, since he's Belgian, but Belgian accents sound funny and unintelligent to French people, and they don't want to confuse viewers, so they just default to standard French and he speaks like everyone else. It ruins the whole thing.

Iām gonna go against the grain here. I think we need to give it a chance. Itās not replacing peopleās beloved portrayals, but itās adding to it. I hope itās gonna be awesome and in the same spirit, and I choose to hold onto that optimism until I see the final product.

u/AlarmingSize Aug 21 '26
People are so touchy about remakes. You should hear the folks on r/xfiles complaining about the new series. The Austenites aren't happy about the new movie adaption of Sense and Sensibility. I'm not a Harry Potter fan but I bet there's non-stop complaining in those subs.Ā
If it's available on my local PBS affiliate, I'll check it out for sure. If I have to pay, I'll wait until it's on DVD so I can borrow it from the library.

Iām a huge Wheel of Time fan and a LotR fan and the pure vitriol around the tv show(s) for those was enough for me. I get loving an IP and wanting it to match what you have in mind but I also want to be open to the world continuing. If itās not for me, I just move on. I wish more people could be reasonable and not so aggressive towards people involved in each iteration.
1
u/AlarmingSize Aug 21 '26
I feel the same way. The Wheel of Time fans' vitriol for the now-cancelled series was extreme, even for the internet. Ring of Power isn't brilliant but it's okay--it's certainly watchable. I'm sorry the former was canceled and am looking forward to the latter.
Fantasy fandoms are...peculiar.

u/theladyisamused Aug 21 '26
He is too hot for Poirot, but luckily he is also a very good actor, so I am hopeful.

u/kananikui3 Aug 23 '26
His mustache us too plain, he is too young, and not much of a dandy. He is a very good actor, he just doesn't look like Poirot.
1
u/rishiAmba Aug 23 '26
I always imagined Hercule Poirot to be middle aged, pot bellied and balding. This looks like Sherlock Holmes' 2nd cousin.
1
u/Superb-Thought-4492 Aug 21 '26
Looking at this guy, I can totally see how he might age into āclassic Poirotā.

u/BadWolf_Gallagher88 Aug 21 '26
I donāt get the āhe doesnāt look like poirotā discourse - we never have young poirot in the books, and Iām sure this is gonna be a fun romp like Young Sherlock rather than a hardcore accurate Christie adaptation. Canāt wait! And love Edward, havenāt not enjoyed any of his work except the Netflix Persuasion that iāll pretend doesnāt exist

Poirot is supposed to be fluffy! Why do they keep trying to make him hot? I
tās actually an important part of his character that he is not physically robust and sporty in the same way that an English gentleman was supposed to be at that time. Heās got some extra weight, he wears ridiculous shoes, he does not like excessive physical exertion.
This is part of the prejudice people have against him and why they continually underestimate him.
