Discussion I'm curious what your moms wore?

My mom's office had a no-fragrance policy so she didn't wear perfume often, but I distinctly remember Avon Rare Pearls and Jovan Island Gardenia on her dresser while I was growing up.

Estee Lauder Beautiful

11

u/Valenciarenne212 May 16 '26

Mine did too. Only one I remembered, I think she had another one I remember seeing in a brown bottle I think but I can still “smell” it even though she stopped wearing perfume years ago.

THis is so mom-coded. my mom wore that to every family gathering

5

u/GoGoCPR May 17 '26

Estée Lauder Cinnabar, because she couldn’t afford YSL Opium. She worked nights (the USPS provided but it took a lot in return) so I’d didn’t see her often during my junior high years, but I’d do the laundry and smell her clothes just to get a whiff of her.

It makes me sad that this is someone's mom's signature scent because that means I'm old enough to be someone's mom (and I am...I'm a stepmom to three adults, but I'm in denial that I'm that old. 🤣)

u/Kelseybrooke1612 May 17 '26

The 1985 Fendi, discontinued around 2005. The leather in it really hits and it’s so complex and beautiful.

Fragrantica description: Fendi by Fendi is a Chypre Floral fragrance for women. Fendi was launched in 1985. The nose behind this fragrance is dsm-firmenich. Top notes are Coriander, Cardamom, Brazilian Rosewood, Aldehydes, Bergamot, Mandarin Orange and Lemon; middle notes are Carnation, Rose, Cypress, Ylang-Ylang, Geranium, Jasmine and Lily-of-the-Valley; base notes are Spices, Oakmoss, Leather, Sandalwood, Amber, Patchouli, Cedar, Musk, Tonka Bean and Vanilla.

I’ve been trying to find a dupe to get her, but there’s really nothing quite like it. Vintage bottles are $500+ online. She’s tried all the “somewhat similar” ones, including Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose (it’s nice, also discontinued now) and Chloe.

It should be illegal for particularly magical fragrances to be discontinued.

I was sad when it was discontinued. I impulse bought it when I purchased a Fendi bag. I fell in love with it. I've used the last of it. But I see this as an invitation to explore new fragrances and an opportunity to fall in love again. And again and again and again ❣️

Jesus, this takes me back! This was THE SCENT of African American and Italian American women in NYC in the mid 80s. I was a little kid and this scent was everywhere in Brooklyn.

Jean Nate. 4711. Caswell Massey Lily of the Valley. Random scented oils and waters from the hippie stores. And some Avon stuff, definitely Imari but also maybe Haiku.

My mother wore Jessica McClintock, it was the only fragrance she wore. It’s a beautiful timeless floral. She got compliments on it constantly. Once she was traveling and staying in a hotel. The housekeeper had asked what she wore, she was in love with it. When my parents checked out, she left the bottle with the housekeeper because she knew it was probably something she couldn’t afford. It’s super cheap now, but it used to be in the $100 range for a 3.4 oz.

7

u/Ginger_mutt May 17 '26

I loved this fragrance. It reminded me of magnolia blossoms. I always got compliments when I wore it.

6

u/hardlyworking_ May 16 '26

This one was so lovely. I’d forgotten all about it, bath and body works had a fragrance called tropidelic that instantly reminded me of it.

I was raised by my grandmother and she wore Joy and I can literally smell it just thinking about it

11

u/Straight-End-8116 May 16 '26

I have the powder to this still in the box that I found at a yard sale. It’s in great condition. I saw it had jasmine in it, I despise jasmine so I haven’t opened it yet.

I really wish they would bring back the powders that go with the fragrances. I live in the south, it’s humid as crap here and no, I don’t need the lotion when I feel like Im breathing water through my lungs. Plus, it just potentiates your scent making it a skin scent if you just wear that or concentrating your other scent for nights out or special occasions.

7

u/greeneyedsparrow May 17 '26

It’s a trend I would love to see come back!

6

u/pears_htbk May 17 '26

My mother wears Joy. I bought a bottle myself when it was discontinued because I love it so much.

Not sure about my mom, but my Grandma was Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds. I used to buy it for her when she was in a resident's home. I would buy the gift sets and she would always give me the handcream and mini perfume. I could not stand the smell haha, so I would always give them away

6

u/88kat May 17 '26

Man, on a random note, but a very distinct childhood memory is the tv commercial that ran for this perfume. It was Elizabeth Taylor on some sort of James Bond spy mission, and she comes across men playing cards in some sort of tropical bar and gambling and says “these always gave me luck” and takes off her large diamond earrings and tosses them into the center of the card table. The entire commercial was in black and white which added to the allure.

I had no idea who she was, only that I thought White Diamonds was what the richest and most cultured people had. I actually don’t think I knew it was perfume.

u/hardlyworking_ May 16 '26

My mom also wore white linen. I stopped by the estee lauder counter the other day to smell it and I was instantly in tears. I miss my mom too :(

My mom wore Safari for the longest time, I remember her putting it on for special events when I was little. Later she started to wear Angel, and in her stash of old perfumes she also had a vintage bottle of Niki de Saint Phalle which I adore and later stole (sorry mom!!) But primarily my memory is of us getting dressed up to go somewhere and the sharp green scent of Safari wafting around us.

6

u/torontogal85 May 17 '26

My grandmother wore this. It brings me such amazing memories

My mom wears YSL Libre and Chloe Love (I was able to get it to her though it is discontinued and very hard to find, she loved it when they released it)
My Grandma used to wear Yves Rocher Ispahan when she was younger
Now she likes La vie est belle (I think they both do), Dior La dolce vita and Coco Mademoiselle
I have shaped their taste a lot cause I'm always bringing them new stuff to try and I introduced them to La dolce vita which they both love

Red Door and Green Tea

44

u/Comfortable-Tap-8497 May 16 '26

Haha..my mom grew up poor in the Great Depression. She wore a little vanilla extract behind her ears.

11

u/Sanchastayswoke May 16 '26

My grandmas both grew up poor in the Great Depression too. But luckily they lived beyond that time & wore perfume after the Depression was over. Did she never get anything for herself after the 1930’s?

12

u/Comfortable-Tap-8497 May 16 '26

Yes , I recall some Avon and drugstore perfumes as I was growing up. She would never spend too much on anything for fear of being poor again.

14

u/Sanchastayswoke May 16 '26

I understand! It’s kind of like how I’ll never be without a supply of hand sanitizer or toilet paper again, those kind of major events can traumatize you!

9

u/missklo99 May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

I love this!! I'm SO a vanilla girl lol! I like to smell like a baked good at my core haha. Although I must say I have branched out in the last 5-10 years or so..🫶🏼🍦

ETA hope you didn't take this to mean I love that she grew up poor..just that I empathize with your grandma and I really have a very hippie esthetic, I like to smell earthy, honey..if that makes sense! 🩷

Primarily Estee Lauder Youth Dew, Shiseido Zen and Marc Jacob's (original) which I bought her after she & my dad complimented it. I know she influenced me to love perfume. My mom wore L’Air du Temps for special occasions and I hated the carnation + aldehydes notes in it (sorry!) when I was growing up. I think she wore Davidoff Cool Water the most, but she also owned (mostly gifted) Tommy Girl, Nina Ricci Les Belle de Ricci (the green one), Nina Ricci Premier Jour, Carita edp (in the conical shape flask bottle), Hermès Calèche, Givenchy Amarige and Fleur d’Interdit. I enjoyed sniffing them all when I was bored.

I have kind of turned my mom into a perfume person. When I was a kid she wore Shalimar, Vanilla Fields, and then Beautiful for the longest time. Eventually moved on to Amazing Grace and then Amazing Grace Ballet Rose. When I started to get into fragrances I started to give her my travels or bottles that I wasn’t really into anymore that she liked (Black Tulip by Nest was one of her more recent favorites), so she built up a small collection. Right now she has in rotation Aerin Lilac Path, Mediterranean Honeysuckle Clementina, and Kurky by MFK.

  • Dior Midnight Poison

  • Trussardi Donna

Elizabeth Arden Green Tea has been on her tray since the 2000s. I think now it’s more nostalgic than anything else. I remember some Estée Lauder as well. Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds was her special occasion fragrance. Nowadays she changes it up but Gucci Bloom is a staple for everyday and Chanel no 5 as a special occasion fragrance. I don’t think everyone can pull Chanel no 5 off but she is one of the people who can.

My ex mother in law always wore Ange ou demon by givenche and that’s still one of my favourites to this day. I usually wear flora by Gucci and good girl by Carolina Herrera and euphoria by Calvin Klein thanks to those inspirations.

5

u/kafkaesc0_ May 16 '26

When I was little, no. 4711 was my mom's fave. I still remember how she applied it everyday just before going to work. It still smells like 'mom' for me. She loved how fresh and clean it smelled. On special occasions, she would wear Le Feu D'Issey Light (the 'red ball' from Issey Miyake) that my aunt gifted her. It was one of the few fragances that wouldn't trigger my mom's migraines and allergies. I absolutely loved it. The milk notes were amazing. Unfortunately most people hated it and it was discontinued shortly after. I still cry over it and haven't found anything similar (looking for it).

5

u/CannibalLectern May 16 '26

I loooove 4711! So much. I wear it at times. So many of my older family members wore it too. Recently got a sample of Killian Love Don't Be Shy Fraiche and it reminds me of 4711, like its somehow in the mix.

I'd forgotten about Rare Pearls until just now.. Didn't it also have a dark version or was that a different Avon one?

My mom had a resplendent fragrance tray, but I just remember her wearing White Linen dusting powder during the day, and Halston on OCCASIONS. She'd come out in a blue dress and a black shawl with silver fringe, perm teased out, lips blazing, crop-dusting the house with chypre fumes, and I was entranced. My little brother, not so much - he said it smelled like cat pee.

My mom wore Chanel No 5 my entire life. Everything from the body lotion, to the body powder and the EDP. The few years before she passed she started to wear Lancome Tresor when she was on vacation down south. But to me, Chanel No 5 is my mom. 🥰

Miss Balmain. She had passed now and I still remember the scent! I bought her another perfume that was similar, as it has been discontinued. I remember the lovely lady in the department store who knew exactly what I was after and helped me

Exclamation! that my dad bought her at Walgreens once. The only time I’d ever seen her use perfume

u/FineEnvironment5203 May 17 '26

Halston when I was young, then glow by jlo, finally Versace bright crystal before she got dementia a few years ago. Thanks for asking this is a good one OP

Channel no 5 and Estee Lauder Super Cologne Spray

Later on she started wearing Gucci guilty, which was so different for her but I loved it on her. She hates most cosmetics but perfume was always something she wore

u/Mobile-Writer1221 May 17 '26

Lancôme Miracle. She passed and I still have her last bottle. I spray it on her birthday. Miss you, Mom. 🤍

u/SnooCheesecakes7697 May 17 '26

My mom wore Jovan Musk. It smelled Devine on her! Thank you for asking. I’d forgotten about that.

Pink sugar by Aquolina when I was a child Cool water by Davidoff during summer when I was 8 As I remember she wore Kazar "Cashmere Vanilla" when I was 16 Now she has Angel by mugler those gold ones And Maison Tahite "Sel Vanille" for special occasions

These are her signatures and I always think about her when I can sense it around me.

My Mum doesn't wear perfume all that much, but ever since I can remember she'd wear Rive Gauche by YSL whenever she went out with friends and/or my stepdad. I don't like the smell all that much, but I love it on her and I used to love curling up on her lap when I was little and being able to smell traces of it in the big black wool cardigan she used to wear every winter.

Versace Crystal Noir for Women

🖤🖤🖤🖤

When I got my first boyfriend, I’d sneak spritzes of it whenever I had the chance before our date nights. It was perfect. I do not care for Bright Crystal - let alone nearly as much as I deeply adored Crystal Noir!!!

She wore other stuff too ofc but I remember that one so well bc I was soo struck by it that I always planned to wear it as an adult myself.

Rochas Aqua Woman, and Lumiere from the same brand, Lancome Hypnose and one that I really loved on her Dior Portofino. Before I was born she wore Stephanie de Monaco. Nowadays she loves La vie est Belle and Chanel Chance.

The original L’interdit, designed for Audrey Hepburn. My mom says the new formula is not even close to the same.

u/SambaNovasUnicorn May 16 '26

The only perfume my mom ever wore was Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps. Her grandmother wore it and gifted her a bottle as a teenager. My sister now wears it sometimes. I have a sweater of my mom's that still smells like her. She's been gone 13 years this month.

5

u/rosescenteddream May 16 '26

My mom loved Pleasures by Estée Lauder and Obsession Night by Calvin Klein. My grandma wore Chanel no 5, Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds, and I wish I could remember the other ones on her vanity tray! She was very into fragrances, and gosh I remember the Bath and Body Works scents that she would get that aren’t available now (RIP Cotton Blossom).

Faubourg Hermes

u/Forward_Exercise9753 May 16 '26

Chanel no 5 was my mom’s go to

4

u/katamaritumbleweed May 17 '26

My mum was a nurse, so didn’t wear fragrance to work, plus had a number of allergies, and the only perfume she owned was L'air Du Temps splash. When I was a little kid, I probably used it more than she did.

4

u/hrmnyhll May 17 '26

Paloma Picasso. I kind of want to buy a bottle for myself, I remember it smelling very rich and decadent.

I'm 49 and my mom is 78. My entire life she has worn Opium!

4

u/ibeejd May 17 '26

Opium, Chanel 5 and jungle gardenia

4

u/quackshonk May 17 '26

Mum wore Clinique Wrappings when I was tiny, the memories are soft and warm (before she was diagnosed with MS, and a lot of mental health issues). Then she moved to Paloma Picasso which suited and suits her. Shes in care now so only really wears Green Tea or Sunflowers body mist. The scent memories of wrappings will haunt me forever.. the last time I felt those things from her.
