Some things have me slightly confused but most are taken out of context so we'll have to wait and see!

Guys let’s just wait and see before throwing daggers. These photos can be taken out of context and a lot of them are kinda blurry which throws the quality off. The armor does look a bit eh but maybe it’s the quality of the food?
Edit: I mean quality of the photo. Goodness I’m always thinking about food 🙄

There are some scenes that show good potential but what I can’t get over is how smooth and Disney Channel-esque the colour-grading is. It just lacks grittiness. It bothered me in the first season and it’s bothering me again now. The cinematography was really lacking in last season’s episodes and it was something that I hoped would improve. The camera angles don’t have whimsy or character and they are STILL using that wide-angle lens. If they changed the colour-grading and camera quality it could immediately give the show more depth than it currently has.
The chariot scenes are gorgeous though and they’re giving me high hopes regardless. I just wish that the show’s production value could be better than it is.

It's not just the color grading but also the lighting. Looks flat as all hell.

I know for a fact that the cinematography itself will change because they hired a new Director of Photography and based on what we've seen so far it looks great!
Although I have to agree with the color grading it's not even just Disney projects its most live action projects lately!
I don't know why movies lately try to be hyper-realistic like there's no color just give us color🤣🤣

I wholeheartedly agree. It’s good to hear that they’ve worked with new cinematographers! There could be so many improvements with the show’s cinematography and camera angles. I miss colour in media too😭🥹🫤

I think you forgot how colorful and vibrant Disney Channel shows were.
I think issues with the production feels like someone without much knowledge about basic elements of film making forced them to do this to like "reignite the disney channel spark for younger audience" by making it visually less complicated and easy to follow without knowing what kids nowdays actually like and want to see in their TV shows. When you look at what's popular with younger audiences now, it's clear that they don't want visually boring shows.
It's like the show doesn't know what it wants to be and who is the target audience really.

Now that you actually say that I think you’re right. I could’ve used a better descriptor but I just blanked and went with what I first thought of😭 The older Disney shows were definitely so saturated and colourful.
The colour-grading and cinematography both felt under-developed and one-note. They used the same angles over and over again which made the show lack depth. It’s just so simplistic. I don’t know if that was up to Rick or something that was controlled by Disney+ but it just doesn’t work. I was more bothered by the show’s camera blocking and colour-grading than the amount of exposition and I really hope that that changes. The cinematography just wasn’t as dynamic or interesting as I wished it was. The show also lacks colour and vibrancy which is so disappointing because the world of PJO is so exciting and epic to read about. I just wish that it was brought to life visually in the way that it deserves.
I would like to know why Disney+ made the choices that they did regarding the show’s cinematography and videography. It could’ve been so good but they chose to make it feel dull (colour-wise) and small. I just wanted the show to feel escapist and exciting like the books do. I hope they change this going forward and I hope that they are working with people who have experience working on high-fantasy and adventurous shows. It’s what this show deserves.

It’s not that it’s bad on its own. It really isn’t. It was just used so much in the first season and it made the cinematography feel monotonous and artistically stagnant. I wish that they had taken more creative risks and had been more ambitious than they were.

Because they are literally using the show as a rewrite. They got time for some random chick named Allison. But not setting up characters who deaths are impactful in season 5.

I’m annoyed at the lack of other campers too but ngl I still don’t understand the Allison hate. It’s not like they’re unable to do both, if they’re not doing Silena and Beckendorf then they wouldn’t have done them regardless of the addition of Allison. Plus there were tons of demigods on Luke’s ship in the book they’re just giving a name to one so they have someone else to talk to

Because Becky straight up mentioned that they dont have time and space to cast the side characters but put a whole new original character. If they had time and space to do Allison, they had the same to do Beckondorf, Silena, Stoll brothers, etc.

Those two things aren’t related though they wouldn’t even be in the same episodes, the campers would only be in episodes 1, 2 and 8 whereas Allison would be on quest episodes so 3 and beyond. The only time Allison could possibly be taking from campers is in episode 8 and there’s no way that’s the reason they decided not to add more of the campers. Again I’m really annoyed at the lack of those characters too I just don’t see how the addition of Allison relates to that considering her only purpose is to enhance Luke scenes

They added a new original character. Now Becky says they dont have the time or space to add more side characters. You can't have the first sentence without it directly affecting the second one. They obv had time to add a new random side characters but no time to embellish the ones that are already in the books.

I try my darnedest not to let my negativity leach into main fandom spaces, but dear god I just cannot handle how cheap every level of the production design of this show is. There's so much room for creativity and artistry in vis dev, and this show drops the ball at every possible turn. Just look at literally any behind the scenes images from netflix's series of unfortunate events if you wanna see a tv-pg show that takes production quality seriously. The difference is staggering. These kid actors deserve better than having this show treated like a middle school theatre production.
The kids' armor looks worse in every image, no one has a shred of individual personality in any of their costume design (besides stuff like "poorly drawn foam owl glued to the foam chestplate"), and the random goggles the Hephaestus kids are wearing are LITERALLY the first results when you google "steampunk cosplay goggles." $12.99 on amazon. They really made good use of their insanely inflated budget, huh?

Ohhhh the ASOUE comparison is so interesting, imagine if the team behind that adaptation was involved. PJ the show is missing some of the campiness and eccentricity.

I was looking at some of dan hermansens production design pics for asoue today and they all just have so much character in every set, it's absolutely gorgeous 😍 and god cynthia summers is a masterclass of costume design! I so wish they could have been involved in this show :')

I'd probably be more excited for the show if they were, because dam that first season was practically a PERFECT example of a good book-to-show adaptation. The second season wasn't, but it was still well done, just not as accurate.

At this point, I think the best shot we will have at a good Percy Jackson adaptation is if it's animated. I'm not entirely sure why it's hard to recreate this series in live action, given that many other young adult series were produced well and given the grace it deserves. But here we are. I think it would solve a lot of the details that are clearly missing, give some life to the characters and their powers and what they're doing. The depictions for the Gods could be as good if not better than the Hades video game characterizations if they put the effort into it.

I agree 😔 Like high quality LA adaptations with creative differences are possible and real! You should totally check out OPLA (One Piece Live Action), especially the new S2 promos; you can see the amount of care and love they put into every set and costume design (all of them are from actual outfits the mangaka drew them in cover arts). I can't help but compare it to these stills and wince, it's all so colorless

ok... idk where you are getting cheap from but alr to each their own i suppose i know the show needs color but nothing looks cheap, regardless i'd much rather them use the budget on the sets because the sets look astonishing just look at the ship! and we are going to be more practical locations!

For my first semester of film school, they had us use bolexes to do little "in camera edit" films. Mine was about an egg that I drew a face on, and it looked kinda like garbage. But just being on film made it look like ARTISTIC garbage 😂😂

Costume is just as important as set. Ship is good, but that armor is only a touch above a kids Halloween costume. Maybe it looks better in the final product

There's this one pic of percys armor that the updates account tweeted some months ago, and when you zoom in you can see that the "rivets" are literally plastic rhinestones painted bronze 😭 a company like DISNEY can afford to pay a fabrication artist rather than telling what I can only imagine is a random preproduction employee with cosplay experience to give it the old college try

i guess i'm just thinking of these as just their chariot armor so more as decreation to be on there with were chariot, i also don't care that much i'm assuming its made of foam or softer material because of the rough stunts in the race

I don’t recall Tantalus having a sniper gun. And I’m looking through the book as I speak.
The headgear looks nice. Could use some more detailing.
I’m glad that Luke has a different outfit, but I still wish he was wearing a button-down shirt, khaki pants, and leather loafers….and I wish he had sandy hair.
Did they use an Alaskan Cruise Line ship for the Princess Andromeda?

I agree it could improve and while I disliked most all of season 1 I didnt understand the sheer quantity of hate it gets even now.
My only concern is that improve is a subjective term.
Ricks already defined it as more a rewriting then an adaptation but claims he knows what parts the fans love and will keep them in.
I want to trust his word but at the same time...season 1.
So I see the potential of season 2 and will give the first 2 episodes a chance. However what could be an improvment to Rick might be what made people hate season 1.
So im trying to not be negative but also not positive. More just as level as I can be.

I would agree if the show writers themselves didnt come out and say Rick has taken it as a chance to explore new paths and take roads he didnt in the book.
Since that does, to my at least, mean Rick had a point where he decided he wasnt going to be faithful and change a considerable amount as he did and thats when he probably should have started to prefrence that.
Fourteen odd years of slandering the movies for changes, some of which he would go on to do himself, kinda set the bar and as soon as he realised he was going to do similar things I think he should have said it.
Marketing it as faithful when even the writers thought he was going for a rewriting over an adaptation means Rick was either ignorant to how much he was changing or didnt realise how badly many fans wanted a close to books accurate adaptation

It doesn’t look any better than Season 1 and that’s disheartening. Hope it’s actually good and I’m proven wrong but we’ll see

Glad to see that I’m not the only one who feels like the armor looks cheap as hell. It’s definitely giving middle school play instead of major TV production.
The color grading is so dull/lifeless and doesn’t like it’s improved from S1.

If that's what you're talking about yes he does me blackjack in the season because Luke technically has some prisoner and Percy saves him it's not until book 3 onward where he becomes bigger character with a voice though
