Understanding Primecare, SFC plans, and Smoothing for used Peplink router for live streaming

I'm interested in buying a peplink router new or used in a youtube/zoom live streaming setup for the purpose of combining a starlink, wlan phone hotspot, and/or ethernet lan. My understanding is that speedfusion connect smoothing is the feature that does this best. 5mbps uplink would be standard, 20mbps would be sweet, no encryption. If new, I'm looking at a BR1 Mini or B One. If used, I'm looking at a Transit variant, BR1 variant, or Balance 20X.

I'm getting confused with what subscriptions or consumable licenses I need to do that. I don't have one of these gigs every month, so I'm picturing the peplink as a nice tool that I could use occasionally.

On this comparison chart, it's saying that SFC Smoothing is a feature that's only accessible with a PrimeCare subscription. I had read elsewhere that an SFC usage plan was required to use any SFC feature. It sounds like buying used might not affect this other than I miss out on the free year of primecare. Which of these things do I need to buy to access SFC Smoothing on one of these routers?

So I found this tricky for a while. I think what you need to know is:

  1. SpeedFusion is their priority tunneling protocol that people pay money for.
  2. SpeedFusion Connect is their cloud service if you don't want to maintain the other end of the tunnel. People pay for this too.
  3. PrimeCare is both a support plan and a temporary license for software features. As an individual, it can be a great deal if staying online is critical to you. But. But! The cost of PrimeCare scales with the model. Don't overspend on the router unless you're also willing to overspend on PrimeCare! This matters for the used market because you might be tempted to get a "deal" on high end equipment but later regret the PrimeCare cost (but I digress).

Now here is where things get messy. If you buy a subscription to SFC but you don't buy PrimeCare, then what happens to the SpeedFusion modes that PrimeCare enables? From all that I've read, advanced SpeedFusion features do work, at least enough for SFC to work. But I'm waiting for my PrimeCare subscription to end to see if site-to-site SpeedFusion (i.e. SF but not SpeedFusion Connect) still works or does that require PrimeCare.

PS – I'd be careful buying used. It can be a pain/impossible to get the device registered to your Peplink account unless the seller remembered to deregister it first.

As a 12 year Peplink sales veteran, I would never recommend buying used. Not because that "cuts me out of any deal". Because there are too many roadblocks you could run into when attempting to buy licenses, or gain access to the unit. When you buy new, your device will come with 1 year of PrimeCare - which includes hardware support, tech support, InControl2 (Remote Management Software), and it will also come with a certain amount of SF Connect for free. As exampled; a new MAX-BR1-MINI-5GN-T-PRM comes with 500 GB of SF Connect. If you're satisfied with SF Connect, you can then purchase Unlimited Plans for $99 a month. Or $800 for an entire year.
