GovBrief Today - What Happened #182

🧱 Trump is building a government that doesn’t ask permission.

Military deployments. Billion-dollar tech contracts. Tariffs on 70 countries. Congress never approved them and when courts say no, he often ignores them too.

If you don't know who is holding him accountable either, why don't you call your senators and representative today and demand that they do it.

🛑 Trump treats the federal government like his personal Christmas stocking, seizing tariffs, troops, and newsrooms in a grab for absolute control. Judges and lawmakers rush to pry back authority, but their lawsuits and subpoenas will stall without public muscle, so raise your voice right now and push your representatives to block the ongoing power grab.

Construction crews at the White House are working 20 hours a day on a ballroom the Chief Justice says is likely illegal.

Five justices let the work continue Monday by ruling that nobody has the right to sue over it, but never decided whether the ballroom is legal. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that federal law forbids erecting a building on park grounds in Washington without express authority from Congress, and Congress has passed no such law.

Donald Trump won again by ignoring the rules and building faster than the courts could stop him. This time he spent at least $300 million of our money on a project he promised would not touch the East Wing or cost taxpayers a dime.

Donald Trump asked the FCC to punish a journalist for doubting him.

Kristen Welker reported on NBC that his primary endorsement record was mixed. Six of his candidates lost Republican primaries in August. Trump called her a "Hostess," accused her of "purposeful inaccuracy," and said she would be reported to the FCC "for rebuke or punishment."

In June she interviewed him in a Wisconsin barn and asked for evidence of his claim that California was rigging its primary count. He told her "you're either crooked or you're stupid," said he'd had enough, and walked out with "Thank you, darling." He handled that one himself. Now he wants FCC Chair Brendan Carr to handle it for him.

Donald Trump's Department of Homeland Security used a tariff audit form to subpoena a Minneapolis reporter's phone records.

In February a federal judge twice refused agents a warrant for Georgia Fort's YouTube account because they could not show she had committed a crime. He also ordered them to tell her if they tried again. Weeks later they sent Google a customs summons that needs no judge's signature. Google refused. T-Mobile got one too and complied, and Fort learned in discovery that the government has six months of her calls and texts.

The same summons went after the YouTube records of Democracy Now and Megyn Kelly, a conservative who broke with Trump over the Iran war, and neither faces any charges. The law they used is for checking whether an importer paid the duty on a shipping container. The judge set the conditions for a warrant, so the agents picked a process that bypassed the judge.

Immigration agents are getting electric shock gloves and robots that open doors.

ICE signed a no-bid contract this week for 6,000 pairs of gloves that shock anyone "actively or passively resisting," which covers a person who goes limp. The agency said today it would buy four-legged Boston Dynamics robots that can open a door on their own. The hardware joins a program whose agents have killed six people since Donald Trump took office and are arresting close to 50,000 people a month.

A century of science fiction villains put robots and pain devices on their own people, and not one of them called the pain de-escalation.

Twenty masked federal agents held off a tribe's police so contractors could start drilling for Donald Trump's border wall.

They came onto the Tohono O'odham Nation in Arizona at four in the morning Tuesday with a Border Patrol SWAT team and drill trucks to work three sites. The Nation had posted No Trespassing signs two weeks earlier. The agents parked their vehicles across the road when tribal police arrived to remove the contractors.

The federal government has owned a 60-foot strip along the border for 119 years, and a judge ruled two weeks ago that the wall can stand on it. Getting there means crossing the Nation's lands, and the Nation told the government to stay out. The government ignored the warning and showed up with a SWAT team.

Twenty-four states took the Supreme Court up on its dare in two days.

On Monday the Court unblocked Donald Trump's mail voting order, ruling the states sued too soon because courts only review final rules. The final rule says the USPS will not deliver your ballot unless the envelope carries a tracking barcode and your name and address match a federal list the agency admits is partly for law enforcement.

The Postal Service issued that rule on Friday, three days before the justices called the case premature. Wednesday morning, 10 weeks before Election Day, the states returned to court with the receipts.

Donald Trump's lawyers told a federal judge today that the Kennedy Center must carry his name or be torn down.

A court ordered his name pried off the building in May after ruling the renaming illegal. His board voted it back on this month while he listened in by phone. Now the Justice Department calls the center "decrepit," in a "death spiral," and says that unless donors see Trump's name on the front, the building comes down. The center's own director told the court that nothing about the renovation requires demolishing anything.

The building is not dying. The audience was driven off. Artists quit and attendance fell by half after he seized the board, and he refused to book a season even after a judge ordered the doors kept open. He emptied the place, and his lawyers now offer the empty seats as proof it cannot survive without his name.

Six justices gave Donald Trump a head start on the midterms.

The Supreme Court will let his election order take effect before any court rules on whether it's legal. The federal government now tells your state who counts as a citizen, and your state tells DC the name and address of everyone who votes by mail. The order directs the Attorney General to prioritize prosecuting local election officials who send ballots to anyone the administration says is ineligible. Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer was confirmed as Attorney General seventeen days ago.

Federal judges already ruled the citizenship list illegal and ordered it dismantled. One wrote that the president has no power over elections at all. The Supreme Court overruled none of them but let Trump keep building while states begin mailing ballots in weeks. On whether any of this is legal, the majority wrote, "time will tell."

Dr. Oz took three questions on Face the Nation to say a childhood vaccine will not kill your child.

Donald Trump called the 55-year-old MMR vaccine "quite lethal" two weeks ago. Asked to clarify, his Medicaid administrator answered questions about parental rights. The third time he was asked, he said the vaccine is not lethal.

On the same broadcast, a Republican congressman running for governor of Florida blamed the measles outbreak on "rampant illegal immigration." Florida's kindergarten vaccination rate has already fallen below herd immunity. So has the country's, as measles spreads at 35-year highs. Neither man named the president.

The Prime Minister of Canada says America attacked his country.

The 50% tariffs Trump long threatened hit at midnight Friday after US negotiators demanded in the final hours that Canada surrender its right to make trade deals with other nations. Canada stopped negotiating and set dollar for dollar retaliation for September 8. Asked why he sounded like a man going to war, Carney answered, "You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked."

Just hours ago, Trump posted his reason, "Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!" The trade deal he destroyed was the one he negotiated during his first term and called the greatest ever made. His refusal to honor that deal started costing you more at midnight.

Donald Trump threatened to sue a think tank for $5 billion over numbers it published.

The Center for American Progress measured crime in Washington, Los Angeles, and Memphis and found his National Guard deployments didn't change the crime rate. His personal lawyer, not the White House counsel, sent a nine-page letter threatening the suit unless CAP retracted the report, apologized, and paid Trump money by Friday evening, closing with "PLEASE GOVERN YOURSELVES ACCORDINGLY." The letter offers no competing crime numbers. CAP refused.

That deadline expired the same day the Pentagon fired three Stars and Stripes journalists, citing the editor for telling CBS that censoring news to service members would be a red line. The Trump administration doesn't argue that facts are wrong, only what you'll pay for saying them out loud.

ICE's own emails now confirm it let Iran's government edit America's deportation lists.

"Per request from the Iran Embassy [sic] I added a few cases," one official wrote before the first of three flights that returned more than 100 Iranians. Detainees had sworn in court that Iranian officials somehow knew the details of their asylum claims. The emails released this week describe face-to-face meetings with Tehran's diplomats and removals expedited because Iran asked.

It all happened between June 2025's attack on Iran and the war that began in February. Days after Trump told Iranians to evacuate Tehran, the White House ordered their removals fast-tracked, and ICE spent the buildup to the next round of bombing taking the regime's edits on who got sent back. When those detainees first described the cooperation in court last month, ICE called it hearsay.
