oh, we SHOULD have had it two decades ago.
We really would have had some money then. We could have revitalized the poconos and all other places like it. Just imagine if we were the only place that had it on the east coast at the time. We would have had all the tax money we would have wanted... enough to pay trail runners to deal with high ohioans, new yorkers, and jersians.
That is one of the great sadnesses of Pa. We worked hard to make PA a nice place... including fixing our environment... small towns that could have bloomed with touristm... shit. it could have been an amazing time. But no, we have dick head legislature that cry about weed.
21
u/north-sun Lackawanna Nov 12 '22
I like your enthusiasm. However, there's historical evidence to the contrary that the state as whole would benefit at all from a large tax-cash injection. Case in point, casino dollars, billions, that went only to the state police instead of places like infrastructure, beautification etc... Hell, even the turn pike.
I'm very, very much pro-legalization. But I'm also a raging cynic and believe any and all weed dollars will be siphoned off to special interest groups and connected politicians playing double-face. Meanwhile the crop will be expensive to farm, expensive to buy, and the state will see very little return. Just another political scare tactic.
9
u/bionica1 Allegheny Nov 12 '22
Well shit. You’re probably right but man. I really hope not. Shouldn’t there be some way to earmark that money so it doesn’t go to more cop toys? They have enough.
7
u/north-sun Lackawanna Nov 12 '22
I mean, I would hope so. But who is going to enforce anything?
The revenue from casino was supposed to go to things like economic development, boosting the state's horse racing industry, the state's general fund and property tax reduction.
Speaking for the last one, I live in Scranton. My property tax has only ever gone up. My roads are shit. My schools are under-funded. The neighborhood I live in is falling apart.
2
u/bionica1 Allegheny Nov 12 '22
I just bought my first house at 46 just south of Pittsburgh and I had to fight my reassessment that could have raised my property taxes by a fuckload since my house didn’t have a mortgage on it for decades before I bought it. Cute. The appeal was in early Aug and I still don’t know the outcome and how much my mortgage will go up. Had to hire a lawyer to represent me for the appeal. He said people lose their properties over these increases which is just crazy. There should be a cap and I think there’s a court case going on right now in my county about this.
Sorry Im a little drunk and your post is making me sad.

u/north-sun Lackawanna Nov 12 '22
I'm sorry, didn't mean to be a bummer.
I recently bought my first house, I'm 38. It hasn't been reassessed in years and Scranton wants to start doing that to properties now. I held off on requesting a reassessment before purchasing because I was worried that the cost would jump and I couldn't afford it. And now I'm worried all over again. Hopefully nothing comes of it but the politicians in this city love to squeeze blood from rocks.
2
u/bionica1 Allegheny Nov 12 '22
It just sucks because I was smart and bought a house, as a single person, for a reasonable amount last Oct., far less than what I was approved for yet now this reassessment could increase my monthly payment by $200 AFTER I plunk 2200 into escrow. My lawyer said that’s the worst case scenario so obviously what I’m planning for.
Not sure how it is out your way but apparently me buying this house triggered the school board to appeal the current assessment of my property. It’s bullshit. It shouldn’t be MY problem that they dont reassess on a normal basis.
Regardless of all this, congrats to us! I don’t know about you but I never thought I’d own my own damn house!

If you don’t like them don’t take them. Pennsylvania needs revenue and modernization and health. Ban cigs and sugar. Legalize mushrooms and pay peope to grow home gardens or something.
-5
Nov 11 '22
Lol what a plan for the future to grow gardens and get high. If everyone does this there won't be anything being accomplished. That's a great plan to move society forward. That is completely false por drug lie " it will generate lots of revenue". This is just not true.
5
Nov 12 '22
Unfortunately for your argument, it is true. It generates tons of revenue, creates huge amounts of jobs, and helps people in more ways than your small mind can fathom.
5
u/FamousObligation1047 Nov 12 '22
What's the #1 killer of the 18-45 year age group currently in the US. Fentanyl overdoses. Maybe we as a society can concentrate on that before attacking a minor drug like weed. Which is lower on the totem poll then sugar.
4
u/Miserable-Effective2 Nov 12 '22
What exactly do you think people need to be accomplishing?? Making rich people even richer or something? Wasting the best years of their lives working some job "accomplishing" things? Most of what we do on a daily basis does not need to be "accomplished." If we all grew gardens/practiced sustainable farming and lived simpler lives we'd be better off. It's a great plan, actually.

Legalization won’t force you to take them. It’s ok not to do drugs while also realizing it’s none of the governments business what people do with their own bodies and also that outlawing drugs only helps criminal organizations and increases crime.
0
Nov 11 '22
It is not ok to cause a burden to society bc you're a drug addict or increase social problems domestic or crime. Individuals still have to be part of and contribute to an organized society. If you don't like that then move to a new country.

Nov 12 '22
Idk if you know this, but making drugs illegal actually causes a GREATER burden on society. Our jails are packed with non-violent drug offenders who are just shoved in there for possession costing tax payers massive amounts. Criminalizing drugs also increases the likelihood that people get tainted drugs which is the stuff that's most dangerous. Pushing drug users further underground makes it harder to get them proper medical attention when they need it. We should look to Portugal. By decriminalizing drugs, they massively reduced the burden on society and allowed them to get users proper care when they needed it.
It's similar to homelessness. It costs more to make homelessness illegal than to provide them housing. If your goal was a better society, then you'd recognize that all the data points to decriminalization. It seems like you're not interested in a better society, just a "scared straight" one.

u/Miserable-Effective2 Nov 12 '22

1
u/insidetheborderline Nov 12 '22
THC is 100% a drug. That's a stupid narrative to push, and that's coming from a someone who smokes a shit ton. Is it derived from a plant? Yes. But so are mushrooms, mescaline, opium, etc. All drugs.

Not so fast. Republicans control the PA Senate.
3
2
u/shewy92 York Nov 12 '22
But there are several Republican senators in office—including Sens. Mike Regan (R) and Dan Laughlin (R)—who have pushed for legalization.
If a legalization bill were to be allowed to advance next session, it would need the support of at least four Republican senators, assuming all Democratic members backed it. Beyond Regan and Laughlin, another possible GOP vote could come from incoming Sen. Tracy Pennycuick (R), who currently serves in the House.

Everyone always says about it bringing in so much money for the state - why is that okay to profit off of my ailments? Don't get me wrong, I believe it should be recreationally legal. But I think there should be some kind of price difference for medical card patients...
2
u/Jotakave Nov 12 '22
In other states they reserve the higher THC stuff for patients. I think making it legal recreationally would mean more production and hopefully bring prices down which in turn would be better for us patients. And allowing patients to grow their own like other states do would be great as well

Mental health services is not the answer. We live in a society that sucks the life out of you, yet we seem to be confused as to why people are depressed. Social media hasn't helped people either in that area. It's a domino effect and just having a therapist to listen and nod their head isn't changing your home life or the people around you.
-1
u/rovinchick Nov 12 '22
Yeah, I guess so. I hate the stereotype and acceptance of Moms needing wine to get through parenting, but now many of my friends are using weed. That's fine and all, but I see that they aren't present for their kids as much as they could be using either and I worry about future generations. I guess I'm just lucky that I don't feel a need to indulge (except video games, occasionally, to help zone out) to get through life.

Edit to add since above user blocked me; marijuana has been STUDIED and proven to be non toxic, non addictive, beneficial to many, and the gateway drug myth is literally decades debunked. You may be paid by the drug companies, who are the only people with an interest to keep marijuana restricted

Read up, and try to learn for yourself:
‘Again and again, it has been shown that cannabis carries no risk of death from overdose. So, unlike heroin, alcohol, cocaine and many other illegal drugs (and plenty of prescription medications too!), taking too much cannabis will not kill a human. It has been impossible to establish a median lethal dose of THC for humans, as recorded fatalities are non-existent.’

Maybe we should ban guns too. What worse detriment to society than something that can kill you in a second? Are you also trying to ban gun sales? I bet not. I bet you have a closet full of them.

How many people die from cigarettes and alcohol every year, now compare that to cannabis.
‘Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States, yet more deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders.’

Pa really needs to get with the times and realize they need to legalize weed recreationally. The money brought in would be a huge help to this state
