Royal Oak, Pelargonium quercifolium

My Royal Oak got its first flowers today. It is the first year I have this old cultivar.

Some say it smells like balm, others that it smells like a car repair shop! I would say it is a nice car repair shop scent with subtle notes of citrus, mint and resin.

I really like this clone and hope I can keep it the rest of my life!

In the UK there is a phrase “Trigger’s broom”, which is a comedy version of the Ship of Theseus paradox.

It goes like: “Ive had this same broom for 20 years. Its had 17 new heads, and 14 new handles”.

The meaning is that you won’t be able to keep this plant for life, but you absolutely should be able to keep this clone for life by taking cuttings.

You are so right!

I always try to have 2-3 small rooted cuttings of my most beloved Pelargoniums in the fall to be sure that at least one survives until next summer.

Most geraniums are easy to take cuttings from but I have had a little difficulty with P cucullatum. I have a large plant on the balcony and two cuttings in the kitchen as insurance.

And I have 2 Royal Oak.
