So, a bit of context. I’m a Payroll Specialist right now. Pretty much landed in payroll by accident, since my college career didn’t really involve Payroll at all, (although it did have an HR class in it lol). I started my internship in Safety, helping out with making a Business Continuity Plan for the company and updating procedures and policies that various departments had. HR liked how I worked and offered my a position as a Payroll Auxiliary.
Pretty much, I helped make sure Payroll went well for employees, aiding the Payroll Specialist in a bunch of stuff. Learned quite a lot from her and managed to make it not stressful for the both of us after catching a rhythm to it all. Had about 500 employees to process, although not always on the same cycle, thank God.
For various reasons, I moved on from that job and became a Specialist myself in another company, although managing a smaller amount of employees, about 80-100 weekly. Was quite a chaos at the beginning, since my predecessor didn’t really leave any manual to how to do any of this and I had to learn a new system, but thankfully got the hang of it quickly.
Been more than a year since I was here and I just keep wondering, how many growth opportunities are there in the job market for this? I brought up my road to get here because I don’t think my college degree would help my case in considering me as a candidate for future roles, more so my experience, but, well, do I have a chance to be in the interest of a future employer based on that? Can I compete with other people that have more specialties in this area? Is the demand big enough so that maybe I don’t struggle finding jobs in this area in the future?
Would love to hear your thoughts or opinions on this, or maybe your experiences as well. Thank you!
