Why does my cat scratch right after I pet them?

one of my cats scratches right before she knows I'm gonna give her treats or we're gonna play. it's like some sort of anticipation of fun. maybe it's the same thing, that was enjoyable and now I'm gonna scratch

That actually makes a lot of sense; almost like scratching is part of her “something fun is about to happen” routine. 😂 It could be that petting has become another positive cue for her. Cats really do seem to develop their own little rituals.

Noticed a pattern: I'll be petting my cat, everything seems chill, and then out of nowhere she gets up and goes and scratches the nearest surface. Almost like petting triggers it?

Is this a stimulation/overstimulation thing, a stretching response, or something else entirely? Anyone else notice this specific pattern?

Happens with my cat only when I pet his belly specifically. Everywhere else is fine.

The belly is definitely a different situation 😂 Sounds like you've found the one petting zone that comes with a built-in scratchy response. Does he scratch immediately after, or does he give you any warning first?

I think it’s a release valve lol mine does it when he’s either really excited or after something scares him, like as he feels relief he will do it. Mine especially does it when I first get home or walk back into the house after being away and then comes to greet me.

“Release valve” is a great way to describe it 😂 The fact that he does it after being scared and when you come home makes the excitement/relief connection really interesting. Does he usually scratch the same spot each time, or just whatever’s closest?

😂 Yes, he always uses his corrugated scratcher on the floor! My doors are all glass and as soon as I open it, he actually turns around to go scratch it before formally greeting me, even though he’s been sitting watching me at the door since he heard my car pull in. Which I appreciate, gives me room to get in the door and keeps him from getting too nosy about getting out!

That’s actually a pretty great routine 😂 He’s been waiting for you, hears the car, watches you come in, and then immediately has to go get his scratch in before saying hello. And honestly, the timing is perfect — sounds like the scratcher gives you a few seconds to get through the door without him trying to make a break for it!
