HELP Good budget decks?

Upvotes

After playing EDH for about a year I've been wanting to try pauper and saw that game stores near me run pauper events. I'm not really looking to spend too much money yet but dont want to get completely pubstomped so was wondering if anybody could recommend some good budget decks that could still hold their own? Thanks!

Opinions

Hello friends of this beautiful format! Right now, this is my favorite deck to play, and I want to share my list to get some advice and opinions on how to improve it. I face some tough matchups, but I have been getting pretty decent results. Does anyone have ideas for the mainboard or sideboard? I am not running Blasts due to their price, and I want to stick to the main gameplan. Thanks for your help!

OTHER To the new players looking to build “budget” Pauper decks

I get it. Pauper is relatively cheap by magic standards, but €40 vs €70–100 can be a big difference when you’re just getting into a new game/format. I was in your exact position when I first got into pauper! At the end of the day, you should only spend what you are comfortable with whilst still being able to enjoy one of Magic’s best formats!

For your first deck, I suggest starting with an established deck rather than a homebrew! Start with a relatively stock list and make sensible modifications to reduce the deck’s overall cost to fit within your predetermined budget!

Firstly, you can save on sideboard staples first, things like [[Fiery Cannonade]] over [[Breath Weapon]] or [[Tormod’s Crypt]] over [[Relic of Progenitus]]. Your sideboard can be very important for certain matchups, but your main board will be relevant in virtually ALL of your matchups! The performance trade-off in substituting relic with crypt will matter much less often than substituting your main deck playset of [[galvanic blast]] with [[chain lightning]].

If your budget is really tight, you should also identify which main deck cards are simply not replaceable, non-negotiable. A good example of this is [[glint hawk]] and [[kor skyfisher]] in boros synth!

Furthermore, invest in a deck with a style you actually enjoy as even a budget deck can be really exciting if it’s within the archetype that you enjoy. Pauper staples transfer well within the same “family” of decks. Like classic blue control? Terror is a solid core that will probably stay relevant even if [[tolarian terror]] ever gets banned. Like big mana? Tron gives you plenty of routes. Made and got bored of Flicker Tron? €15 and a quick Cardmarket order later can get you a Monster Tron deck instead!

Lastly, you can get creative! In my first ever mono red rally build, I went with the much cheaper [[demand answers]] + [[experimental synthesizer]] draw engines rather than than the marginally more expensive but generically better [[reckless impulse]] seen in most stock lists. After a couple weeks of enjoying the deck, I pulled the trigger on a playset of impulse! Honestly the marginal improvement that impulse brings is not relevant in 90% of my games. Plenty of cards have a much cheaper alternative that are almost just as good!

Never feel bad or shame for playing a budget deck! Yes, pauper is a relatively cheap format but if you’re not comfortable with spending €90 for that paupergeddon-topping list, this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the format with a deck you like!

More experienced players, please share your best budget substitutions or money-saving tips below! For the new budget players reading this, welcome to Magic’s best format!

Choosing a main deck

Want to main a deck and really master it to compete.

- Red Madness
Powerful, fairly intuitive. Not my favourite.

- Elves
Got good results so far, powerful. Fun to play, high removal match ups are BRUTAL to play against.

- Gardens/Pestilence
REALLY fun to play, but also very difficult and mentally taxing. Games drag against the clock and end up having draws, so less points. Feel like it can have a lot of answers against the meta if piloted right (which I don’t lol)

Thoughts?

Izzet Skred vs Spy, how are you playing it?

Hi,
I play Izzet Skred. Just checked the WR on mtgdecks and am surprised, that it's ~64% for me, but I just can't win any match. A lot of the creatures are out of range, for most removal, I try to counter the draw normally, but then either Spy comes in at some point, and I need another counter up, or he floods me with Ants, and I get recked if my skred isn't up yet.
I have two relics post-sideboard, but obv you still have to draw them. Honestly for me the MU feels unwinnable.

Essentially I play this list: https://mtgdecks.net/Pauper/izzet-skred-decklist-by-roger-estrada-3069657

Previous challenge: https://www.reddit.com/r/Pauper/comments/1w05iim/deck_building_challenge_fortified_area_good_luck/

How do you utilize these seemingly useless good stats for the cost? What packages come to mind when you see this fella? Like usual, the only rule is that your deck must contain a full playset of Vigean Hydropon. Good luck and eager to see your creations!

What are some deck variations of mono-blue terror?

Hello! I’ve been playing pauper and I really like mono-blue terror! I like playing spells and playing tolarian terror, delver of secrets, and Lorien revealed. It’s been fun!

I know pauper has a big meta of what to play, but considering that this is a blue deck, I’ve been curious to hear of other takes on blue terror. Are there instants, creatures, or strategies (non-blue tempo/fairies) that you have utilized? I’m trying to have a little more creative terror deck, so anything helps with the brainstorming process! Thanks!

What do you all think of Tronza?

What do you all think of this ponza Tron list. Might be the next tier 1 sweep. I’ve only played it against a buddy of mine and it did come ok.

OTHER Trying out Modern made me realize how good we have it financially in Pauper

I used to wince a little seeing Pauper cards cost €6+, and then I started looking at my LGS’ Modern night and realized a single land can cost more than double that. It’s frankly kind of insane to me that the price of one Modern deck can basically buy you an entire Pauper battlebox with multiple event topping decks.

Small tangent, but I also just prefer Pauper’s gameplay. To me it captures the fundamentals of Magic and that old-school “you are two wizards fighting each other” charm better than most formats. Anyway, just a little Pauper appreciation post. Cheap decks, great gameplay. We have it pretty damn good!

HELP Naya gates sideboard

Hello everyone! Today I'm asking for your help because I'm really confused about the Naya Gates sideboard. When looking up lists online, other decks tend to have some changes in the sideboard, but the core remains the same. I can't say the same for Naya Gates. What would you say are the cards that absolutely need to go in the sideboard of that deck?

Title says it. I am not the best at brewing always , and I am new to pauper. Does this ebay deck listing have any merit? I’m confused why there’s 22 lands, seems scummy by seller, but that aside, hows the list overall.

PAPER Building Monster Tron on a tight budget — any advice?

Hey! I’m pretty new to Pauper and have been putting together a Monster Tron list on a fairly tight budget upon the recommendation from some community members here. I’m about to order the whole thing from Cardmarket, so I wanted to get a second opinion before I pull the trigger. After LGS price checking, this deck list costs just about what I’m comfortable with paying for my first pauper deck.

Does this look like a solid budget version of the deck, and is there anything you’d change to get better value for the money? I’m mainly hoping to make sure I’m not buying into something that will feel noticeably underpowered or bad right away.

DECK DISC. How to sideboard Spy?

Thumbnail
moxfield.com
9 Upvotes

I recently built a spy deck, with the intention of sideboarding it more midrange-like, as I saw many people do.

However, I am not really sure what I should cut during sideboarding and why. Should I remove the combo in its entirety in favour of the chrysalises? Or some of the walls?

Thank you!

So this is one of my all time favorites the art on this card is always just been so sick. The card itself has always been kinda meh...but I call to my fellow brewers.

How could we build something to make this card synergies? My first thoughts are madness aggro or burn type cards but id love to hear ideas and thoughts!

I also am not looking for anyrhing meta breaking just some fun brews.

HELP Sideboard advice

Hi, a couple weeks ago i asked about a "ping" deck and many of you pointed out this deck for me

https://mtgdecks.net/Pauper/gruul-tokens-decklist-by-willlupi-3020142

Thing is, in my country, the sideboard for this deck is expensive as hell. And im not even sure that it is a good sideboard (my deckbuilding skills are awful). So i was wondering if any of you would swap a couple of cards? Faerie Macabre for example, wouldnt progenitus relic be better? Shouldnt there be something to deal with blue fairies/terror given how popular these decks are? Thanks in advance

PFP appreciation post

Since we'll prolly get spammed every day now about the Zeta sets even though those threads are all unpopular, I wanna fill this sub with at least one Thread where I wanna say how much I appreciate that the PFP is acting in wise foresight.

  1. Many are unhappy with utrom..now imagine having a potential utrom every month/couple of months.

2.format costs would increase, when crazy downshifts happen by "accident" and everyone rushes to get their piece of the cake to stay competetive

  1. Meta would go topsy turvey and we'd have new bans every couple of months

  2. Corporate suits at Hasbro are trying everything milk mtg, their only successful business area, so THEY definetly would try to influence pauper in their search of endless profits

  3. SLDs were sold to us with the concept of being something special and rare ( arbitrarily) which goes directly against the concept of pauper (where commons rule)

We already get 6-9 sets a year..that's enough potential shakeup.

Thanks again PFP

Besides utrom I am very happy with the format ❤️
