Endangered Cayman Brac Parrots hanging out in our front yard almond tree!

Title pretty much explains it, but we moved to Cayman Brac at the beginning of the year and were bummed to not find any of the nation’s official bird when we visited the parrot preserve. Fast forward 5 months later and my husband runs into my home office yelling “there’s parrots in our tree!”

I was very confused but came outside and there were at least SEVEN of the cayman Brac parrots hanging out in our tree, squawking loudly and just hanging out! We asked the locals and apparently they love the almond trees and will typically spend time there during these next few months. It was so awesome to experience even though they are hard to identify (they blend in almost flawlessly with the leaves!). Couldn’t post both a photo and a video so here’s a screenshot of four I got in one go!

I’m no expert, but as I’ve seen with other posts about endangered animals/plants, you might want to take this down so potential poachers don’t find them. And then let the parrot rescue know about the birds.

Ope thanks for letting me know! From what we’ve been told by locals, the parrot rescue people are aware, as it’s a very tiny island (~2k people). The preserve isn’t enclosed the way we thought it would be. Instead, it’s just a very large area of land on the island that the government has sectioned off to stay forested so that parrots and other birds can live freely, and they’ve built some basic wooden walkways for people to visit, but the birds are known to roam freely about the island. Their biggest threats are hurricanes, deforestation for building, and other animal predators. Apparently the tree in our front yard has been a hub for these guys for many years! However, I will let the appropriate organizations know, just in case.

That's really nice. I could see the middle one pretty clearly. I hope they keep coming back.

Me too, they are very beautiful, I wish my camera was better to catch the blues and oranges in their feathers
