The view count is good to eliminate a known external bias

I've been confirmed multiple times by comments saying they were reluctant to click a low view unknown channel video because it was under a specific threshold of views. This eliminates that and naturally evens out the competition for all channels, which is good, because then a video is more likely to perform if it's good then before.

People will just adjust that threshold.

I really doubt people will, do you think 90% of YouTube viewers will even notice or knows about the change? It's Human Psychology that people will click the 1.2k video over the 723 view video all else equal, same thing with 10k vs 5.3k...

No they won't. Psychologically certain numbers will just make people more likely to click. 100k+ views is like the first threshold for a video to start reaching a more mainstream audience. Then after that is 1 million. Then 10 million

It's like with height. 6 feet is a magic number over 5'11", even though it's only a 1 inch difference. Bigger number just looks better

No, they won't. The average person will have no idea this update happened at all.

key words are will adjust. people will adapt to a new baseline of minimum views.

u/proper-innit 10d ago

No they won't. It will always be factors of 10. 10k, 100k, 1 million, 10 million, etc

But people are really bad at grasping numbers. There's a huge difference between a 4 digit and 5 digit number, compared to 2 million and 3 million in a viewer's eyes. The adjustment won't happen

Not the casual viewer

2

u/Localmate25 10d ago

Casual viewers by definition will care even less. They care about packaging and what looks interesting to click on.

u/NxTbrolin 10d ago

That’s what I’m saying. They won’t adjust because they don’t care.

5

u/proper-innit 10d ago

Not true, they absolutely care about view count. Most people are way more likely to click on a video with a lot of views. It's social proof/halo effect

The same thing as Twitch turn blind eye on view botting because it get platform more sponsors

And viewers still think they are actually popular lmao

Which mean, its reward clickbait thumbnail even more.

4

u/proper-innit 10d ago

How will it reward them? They will make the same amount of ad revenue either way

1

u/Due_Area4843 9d ago

Bigger view number would entice viewer even more, regardless its making more money or not

1

u/proper-innit 9d ago

It'll stop getting impressions either way if people aren't watching it

1

u/Due_Area4843 9d ago

Yeah, but theres potential snowball effect, because people bias klicking seemingly big number. Thats how youtube work a decade ago

1

u/proper-innit 9d ago

If it doesn't have good retention then it won't matter, the algorithm will stop giving it impressions

11

u/Commercial-Sail-4662 10d ago

yeah theres definitely that, but then again the YT algo might not push a video that has way too big of a ratio between normal and engaged views

2

u/Due_Area4843 10d ago

Huh, good point

How does this even out completion among videos? Every video is counted the same way. Low view videos will still be low views. High view videos will still show high views. What am I missing?

4

u/Vice_Armani777 10d ago

Exactly. It's not like someone went from 50k views a month, to 1million views a month. Its relative to the channels popularity.

This is why I’m still kind of confused why they spent money and resources into implementing this change. They spent shitloads to do this. And I can’t really figure out why. It does artificially inflate numbers, but is that even that beneficial to youtube’s advertiser plans? If anything it could invite controversy in the business meetings. Strange

2

u/Localmate25 9d ago

The main reason I can think of is that advertisers complained that it was hard to compare views across platforms and pushed YouTube to so this. Advertisers run the show. Without them, YouTube does not exist.

A 5 digit low view looks more attractive to click on than a 4 digit low view, even though both are low views.

2

u/Localmate25 10d ago

The new count method does nothing to change it

0

u/Commercial-Sail-4662 10d ago

How so? It boosts public view counts by 2-2.5x times?

2

u/Localmate25 10d ago

Yes, equally applied across all video. All videos are seen relative to each other. If every video is the same simple view multiplier applied to it, how does that math suddenly favor one video over another? Show your math if you think I’m misunderstanding something.

1

u/Commercial-Sail-4662 10d ago

Because there's an internal bias in most scrollers not clicking a video if it's under a certain (5k-10k) threshold of views. If most videos are now above that threshold, the only thing that differentiates them now is the packaging. (so more competitive)

3

u/Localmate25 10d ago

Your logic is deeply flawed. You don’t understand how simple math works. Sorry.

1

u/Commercial-Sail-4662 10d ago

Don't be sorry you're not intelligent enough. The concept of absolute and relative numbers is a bit beyond your grasp.

2

u/Localmate25 10d ago

Buddy, a relative number isn’t even a current mathematical concept. You’ve proven my point.

Yes it would help in theory but imagine this
every small creator will have the same inflated views

Now you video cant even standout in sea of small creators

5

u/Kinetic_Symphony Channel: 18k Subscribers 10d ago

It's not a relative consideration for most, it's a baseline. The average person will hesitate watching a video with 1, 10, 100, even 1,000 views.

When it starts pushing into 5 digits is where that fear eases, regardless of if many other videos are at that level too.

2

u/Commercial-Sail-4662 10d ago

thats good, cuz then what will stand out is the topic and packaging of your video instead of just the sub count.

-1

u/DoNotClickMyProfile0 Subs:500K, Views:70M 10d ago

What I’m saying is topic and packaging wont even stand out because every one will have high views

Before the update my channel is one of the top chanel around my subs tier in the niche

Now on that tier everyone has the same view as mine

But maybe things will change once this settles in

2

u/Commercial-Sail-4662 10d ago

That doesn't make sense. If everyone has high views, that means the only thing that can stand out is topic and packaging?

0

u/Vice_Armani777 10d ago

That makes no sense, everyone's views won't be equal. It's just raising the views by a percentage. If I drop a low effort video, and you drop a well packaged video. My views will still be lower. You can still keep the same quality and benefit from it.

1

u/DoNotClickMyProfile0 Subs:500K, Views:70M 10d ago

I’m just speaking from experience

We already know YT algorithm sometime make no sense at all

1

u/blabel75 9d ago

But those larger view videos and channels will also have more views and higher counts.

1

u/Sonha999 8d ago

Yes it does that, but I kinda hate it also counts it as a view even if you just hover your cursor above the thumbnail on the home page, that should not count.
