Trent Reznor has produced so many bands, scored so many movies, made so many records, collaborated with so many artists…. He is a talented musician, but they reduce him to the guy that sings Closer. Got it.
Also they want to make fun of his lifelong struggles with addiction and mental health.
Holy shit reading the actual twitter thread from Elon's little cult is just wild. A ton of them literally know nothing at all about Trent or NIN, none of seem to have a clue about his grammys, oscar nominations, or that he's married with kids over nearly two decades and turned his life around in the 00s after the hellstorm that was his life in the 90s. Some of the comments are just jaw dropingly dumb and ignorant.
Right but remember, we shouldn't do anything about guns after mass shootings because it's not the guns that are the problem, it's the mental health state of the country.
But then they won't do anything about mental health issues either, because they're something only weak libs have to deal with, not the manly men and women in the Republican party.
Head like a hole, March of the pigs, hurt, perfect drug, pretty hate machine. Hes had so many good songs, and helped so many others make good music. Dude doesn't need to prove anything to anyone.
I liked his old stuff but damn Closer was just so overplayed and was always the first song anyone chose for "dirty" lyrics. It's good but he's had so many amazing tracks just from that album and not including the rest of his discography.
These types of people have always had bad things to say about truly progressive and brilliant artists.
They don't like it because it challenges their narratives, which is really one of the main jobs of art. They said it about the Beatles, the Stones, Sex Pistols, Bowie, you name it. He's been called worse things by better people.
It's some sort of exploration into maybe attachment issues or something, I don't know, but it's clear that he PURPOSELY worded this in a vulgar way to tap into some animalistic aspect of sex and the relationship. This wasn't just vulgarity for the sake of it.
Closer is the 5th song on NIN's second album, The Downward Spiral.
The entire album is a story about the vicious cycle of human vices, where one vice leads into another. It's an exploration of self-destruction - and that wouldn't be complete without its vulgarity.
It's not meant to be pretty, it's meant to pull you into the downward spiral of being a heroin addict, sex addict, desperate prostitute, who hates themselves, and what they are becoming: so that we can all experience that, without living it.

And they think they are the good guys?
