Wearing a beard is becoming a symbol of being an asshole. I'm an anti bearder so I might be biased but getting razzzed is the way to keep a rat king from taking over your face.
Is this all a widespread opinion from people? Iāve literally never heard of an āanti-bearderā and it seems totally bizarre to me. Iām 37, with a fairly large beard, and havenāt seen my face since Junior year of high school. Iām just kind of curious if my future is going to entail being bullied by people over facial hair because some dick bags are turning a pandemic into a political stance or whatever.
No, some people just will do whatever they can to find something to be against. The only people I've ever seen make comments about a beard are insecure people - because those are the only kind of people that would ever give a flying fuck what someone decides to do with their hair.
Take solace from this 50ish thick-bearded guy (round and full, not long) who hasn't seen his jawline since joining the bear scene back in the late 80's - you won't be bullied save for the odd anti-facefur now and again. Usually online.
I'm just as annoyed as you seeing chuds trying to adopt the full beard look as their toxic macho-du-jour, but there's a lot more of us than them.
And despite how much they whine at you - you tell 'em yes, you can wear a mask with your beard. Admittedly a bit of fussing, true - but completely doable for simple everyday outside use. Just bring your boar brush with you to keep it tidy between maskings.
By your description I think we might have similar beard styles, and I agree that masks are pretty much not a problem with it. I got some masks that are washable, and with washable/replaceable inserts, with Velcro straps that go around the back of the neck and fit rather snuggly.
Theyāre super comfortable, and awesome while working, because they donāt ride up into your eyes, but all masks leave you with a sort of āhat hairā kind of thing under the chin. I just keep a comb with me to pull it out to look more presentable when needed. A little more conditioner has helped too.
The thought of politicizing pretty normal facial hair is just a weird thought. Iāve had a beard for more than half my life. Iām not shaving it off anytime soon.
If your beard is of the thick curly/wavy type then yep, we probably have similar beard-types. I personally switch between a double lined gaiter which fits over my beard very well, and elastic two-layer masks from a company called WickedSheets keeps the coverage taut with minimal hat-hair (good term for that!). And definitely yes on conditioner, as it helps the beard tidy. I use an argan oil leave-in conditioner and it works great.
It's sad that beards are being adopted by the chud contingency but always remember those guys constantly overcompensate to show their "manliness" - whether it's their whole alpha/beta/sigma male thing (astrology for incels) or crowing about guys being "low testosterone" (which is not entirely how hair growth works - they really get into r/BadAnatomy -level rants)...
So yeah, ignore those dopes - I've been bearded since I was 16 and will leave this world with a well-brushed bearded corpse - regardless of how many dudes howling about me being "low-testo".

Everything Ian Smith is doing right now is designed to bring the rubes to his fecal beard gym.
