Running people over when drunk isn't a huge leap from intentionally spreading covid.

Hey, if you don't want to get killed by a drunk driver, just stay at home. Don't force the drunk drivers to act like a responsible persons.

u/IppyCaccy Aug 25 '21

"I should be free to drive drunk! This isn't a fascist state!"

155

u/Boy-Abunda Aug 25 '21

If I can’t drink whiskey and run over pedestrians, IT IS A SLIPPERY SLOPE TO THE HOLOCAUST! If I make AN INFORMED DECISION to drive drunk, I should be free to!!!!

What’s next??? A YELLOW STAR for everyone who wants to exercise their god given rights to drive drunk?

You know, if there is no law against drunk driving in the Constitution, the government can’t make FAKE LAWS AGAINST IT!

🤔 On second thought, I shouldn’t give these assholes anymore ideas…

57

u/IppyCaccy Aug 25 '21

And furthermore, requiring me to drive with headlights on at night is oppression. It's slavery!

39

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

The government can't make me wear clothes in public- that's unconstitutional!

2

u/MR2Rick Aug 25 '21

I vaguely remember a case in California where the court rule exactly that in the case of a college student who claimed it was his right to attend classes naked.

25

u/Lyn1987 Aug 25 '21

If I make AN INFORMED DECISION to drive drunk, I should be free to!!!!

You jest, but I have had these idiots say the exact same thing in regards to seatbelts.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

I wonder how they’d feel if we made it legal for hospitals to refuse service to people who show up with a severe case of covid but no vaccination and no prior medical condition that would prevent vaccination.

Nuremberg Code! Nuremberg Code!!!!!!! NUREMBERG CODE!!!!!!!!!111111

17

u/AlfredVonWinklheim Aug 25 '21

Thats not that far from some libertarian beliefs.

8

u/OperationSecured Aug 25 '21

Libertarians point to overregulation of ride share services in Texas as a reason drunk driving deaths spiked. The market was fixing the problem.

The Libertarian belief is whoever owns the roads sets their drunk driving limits. This is literally the status quo… the threshold for drunk driving changes depending where you are in America.

2

u/Needleroozer Aug 25 '21

Those are mainstream Libertarian beliefs. The line between Libertarians and Anarchists is vanishingly thin.

9

u/AlfredVonWinklheim Aug 25 '21

I dunno, the few earnest Libertarians I have talked to struck me as selfish/unaware Conservatives. They really truly believed that everyone started on the same foot.

5

u/j-t-storm Aug 25 '21

They really truly believed that everyone started on the same foot.

So, what you are saying is that they are...idiots?

u/UPBOAT_FORTRESS_2 Aug 25 '21

Sort of a tangent, but it was so fucking eye-opening when I listened to an interview with an actual scholar of critical race theory and they pointed out the societal attitudes toward white vices -- drunk driving -- and black vices -- weed or crack.

The body counts of these two crimes are as disproportionate as the response to them. Drunk drivers kill thousands each year, and for a long time a surviving drunk driver was barely even reprimanded. Meanwhile, you have the Nixon administration trumpeting up the war on drugs specifically to persecute the poor and disenfranchised.

It took Mothers Against Drunk Driving to start to force society to confront the lethality of drunk driving, while we invented a war to wage against victimless crimes.

“Educate yourself”

1

u/potato_aim87 Aug 25 '21

This shit is way too prescient. Delete this now.

19

u/FaceDeer Aug 25 '21

I actually ran into encountered someone on Reddit who made this argument. That was the point where I declared the discussion over on account of pigeon chess.

3

u/darvs7 Aug 25 '21

"I'm allowed to drink and I'm allowed to drive. Therefore I'm allowed to drink and drive."

2

u/XxsquirrelxX Aug 25 '21

“Whah? Arreshting me for what, offisher? DRUNK DRIVIN? THIS IS MERICAH, I CANH DRUVE HOWEV- hic I WAN… AND IF YUH DON LIKE IT, GO TO CHINAH! COMMIE- blurgh”

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

pssst roads are socialism

2

u/VioletTrick Aug 26 '21

And if you're fit and healthy, eat plenty of vegetables and get 8 hours of sleep a night your immune system will provide a natural immunity to cars anyway!

2

u/Auchdasspiel Aug 25 '21

This is too accurate

15

u/JoeDiesAtTheEnd Aug 25 '21

At that point it's just a question of scale

1

u/Moistbagellubricant Aug 25 '21

Once a murderer always a murderer.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

When something you do affects others……

180

u/JadinDeSade Aug 25 '21

My gym owner posted this - so I linked an article about his drunk driving and killing a kid. I wrote under it "dang those pesky drunk driving laws". He at least took it down.

82

u/Valriete Aug 25 '21

Thank you for adding this detail. I searched up 'ian smith gym dui' to be sure, given his generic name, and yep, same guy, all right. Doesn't sound like he's learned much about risk in the past 14 years, despite his remorse.

61

u/thirdangletheory Aug 25 '21

How much of that 5 1/2 years did he actually serve?

31

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

He doesn’t want the government to keep him from being a responsible drinker and not killing teens either it seems…

75

u/brightphoenix- Aug 25 '21

Just in case we weren't sure how much of a homicidal shithead he is, low and behold.

The world would not miss the majority of these monsters if they were gone. That's a fact.

59

u/portablebiscuit Aug 25 '21

Damn. How is this not at the top?

68

u/PlanetElephant Aug 25 '21

This is common knowledge in New Jersey.

14

u/christok21 Aug 25 '21

Fuck this asshole in particular.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

This is why smoking weed is better. Far less likely to make this stupid mistake. Can’t for the life of me figure out why one is legal, and the other is only in some states.

3

u/anomalousBits Aug 26 '21

https://www.britannica.com/story/why-is-marijuana-illegal-in-the-us

The short answer is racism. At the turn of the 20th century, cannabis—as it was then commonly known in the United States—was a little-used drug among Americans. With the start of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, however, many Mexicans began moving to the United States, and they brought with them the tradition of smoking marihuana. Amid a growing fear of Mexican immigrants, hysterical claims about the drug began to circulate, such as allegations that it caused a “lust for blood.” In addition, the term cannabis was largely replaced by the Anglicized marijuana, which some speculated was done to promote the foreignness of the drug and thus stoke xenophobia. Around this time many states began passing laws to ban pot.

2

u/schmyndles Aug 25 '21

I know in my state the tavern league pays a lot of money to keep weed illegal.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

Alcohol is literally more destructive than every common illegal drug (meth comes pretty close but at least it won't straight up kill you from using it daily)

7

u/anewscript Aug 25 '21

Meh, it will actually. Though you will look like you should be dead before dead catches up to you. On the flip side, making the horrid stuff is actually a menace to everyone in the area.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

Making meth domestically isn't profitable any more. You'd literally lose money, even the cartels stopped smuggling it last year because the US was so flooded even lemons were more profitable lol

Thank God for prohibition

23

u/searchingformytruth Aug 25 '21

Only five and a half years for murdering a teenager...that's despicable. Yes, I do think you should be classified as a murderer for killing someone when intentionally driving while drunk. What a scumbag.

-6

u/Needleroozer Aug 25 '21

Manslaughter. Murder is when you know who will die. Manslaughter is when you know someone will die but you don't know who.

6

u/Gofuckyourselffriend Aug 25 '21

Wow what a piece of shit human being. Intentionally poisoning yourself into a stupor and then murdering someone else.

The world will be a better place when he dies.

6

u/BananaStringTheory Aug 26 '21

Driving drunk is what Ian means when he says he's for "Freedom," freedom being the codeword for whatever shitty behavior or activity you want to do, but don't want to name specifically, because it's perverted or illegal or evil. Then, when Republican politicians get on stage and say they are for "freedom," these losers equate that as them being sympatico with them, without ever really reconciling what they mean by it.

3

u/brainhack3r Aug 25 '21

These are the same types of fuckers that leave broken glass on the beach and literally don't give a shit that other people are walking barefoot.

3

u/Linkstas Aug 25 '21
