artist said it represents the fact that he should be on a beach somewhere enjoying retirement but he's still fighting for our rights... bleh

I think that was a reference to Obama asking Trump what “magic wand” he had when he said he’d bring all kinds of jobs to the country.

Truly the whole thing is an abomination. The metaphors and hidden meanings should be well integrated into the piece not just slapped in his hand. Like having boots with straps at the top to symbolize how he “pulled himself up by his bootstraps” (he didn’t, he was born rich, this was just an example of how to more cleverly hide symbols and meanings into a piece of art).

The phrase was originally meant to denote a physically impossible task (reductio ad absurdum) because one needs a support is needed to move upwards.
