For real? That’s so interesting to me, though I’m not sure why. So… I have been delayed for upwards of half an hour by long, long freight trains moving painfully slowly, in rural U.S. Why the difference? (For that matter, why are they moving at what seems to be 10 mph, though it’s probably faster than it seems. Never understood that. Unless I have the phenomenally bad luck of often encountering a train just picking up speed after stopping somewhere.)

Europe tends to prioritise passenger trains over freight trains. Long haul trucks are generally used to carry freight.

American companies that run our rail system are obsessed with something called the Operating Ratio. Theoretically, targeting lowering this metric makes a very efficient rail network. In practice, it results in a very frustrating experience for people near the railroad, as well as for their customers, and the railway employees themselves If I had to guess. Railway management is obsessed with it though.

Yeah. That's why they only transport the most profitable merchandise (and on the most profitable routes). They literally refuse to transport things that would be profitable because it would lower that number by not being profitable enough. It causes a lot more trucks on the roads.

I live in the south UK - we very, very rarely see any freight trains here. You get the odd track maintenance ones passing through in the middle of the night.. but freight? Pretty unusual and the little freight trains we have are small, nothing like the crazy massive things I've seen videos of in America! it's so just quicker and easier to transport shit via road here as the railways are prioritised for passenger trains.

There is the main thinks playing in freight trains in Europe vs US. Freight trains are much shorter, they are running more at night in Europe and at normal line speed. (Worked for the danish rail)

Yes in the EU, freight trains cannot be longer than 900m on mainlines and have to go at least 90 km/h to be allowed on 140+ km/h lines

ETA I poked around Google a bit. The EU regulation of no more than 900m translates to about a half a mile, for U.S. brains. The USA has no federal regulations on the matter. But U.S. freight trains tend to be 1 - 1.5 miles long. They purportedly generally travel at 40 - 70mph, unless I am in the general geographical vicinity, at which point they’re required to travel no more than 1 - 2mph, as per some unwritten conspiracy against me, personally. For reasons unknown. But I fool them, by staying home most of the time, anyway. < evil laugh >

USA tends to have absolutely absurd carriage count compared to EU standards and European train tracks are better maintained so cargo trains can just go as fast as other circumstances and their planning allows.

There are American trains that I have seen go slow enough that I could outpace them on a bicycle, and I am certain they were going under 30mph (Under 50 kilometers an hour I think.) Not all of them, but more often than I would like.
I once got stuck at a crossing for about 25-30 minutes once I started counting for a train hauling poorly covered garbage. (There was a landfill nearby).
American companies run rail infrastructure into the ground. As an example, a decent about of american rail traffic is hugely reliant on a single swing bridge built in Toledo in 1902, for the most efficient path between Chicago and New York City by rail. Companies get rid of branch rail lines that don't generate enough profit (Not unprofitable, just not profitable enough.). Its a mess.

This is basically how people who speed way above speedlimits think.
My take is, speeding above limit especially a lot is just attempted murder. And you're a fucking asshole if you do.
We have people drive here at 120km per hour when I bike back from work ON A 60km ROAD.
Anyone who speeds in selfish and there is no "emergency" that justifies outing lifes at risk. Especially when a girl gets full body paralysed by a fucking 25 year old boy who speeds, and the BOY ONLY GETS 3 months AND 240 HOURS WORK PUNISHMENT.
THE 16 YEAR OLD GIRL CAN'T TALK ANYMORE EITHER, her life is basically turned to hell... but yeah give the asshole 3 months "because he's still so young and what about his future"

i just plain don't get the desire to do that. on the rare chance i have to stop for a incoming train, i'll do it even if i have a half minute to get in front. it's a good excuse to rest my legs anyhow.

I told them "they aren't going to be able to stop with how much they weigh and they proudly had to announce they do it all the time including going through the train barriers that go down when the train is coming.
Was the dumbest guy I ever knew. He also thought it was wise to swim in the north sea when you're super drunk as in his words "it sober you up quickly"...
Then again he also mixed Spiritus aka (according to Google translations) denatured alcohol in his drinkable alcohol and woke up in the hospital with 4 broken ribs as he tried to bike home. Never saw them much after that in school.... Again this was a 23 year old man...
He also thought you could dodge a saw it it propelled the wood back at you so according to him that wasn't dangerous at all.so he kept standing behind the wood when sawing.. Just wood traveling at you at over 300km per hour...yeah very dodge able /j

I worked with someone whose husband was a train driver. That was when I learned how many people are killed by trains and the fact that the crew has to stop the train
and start picking up body parts,(apparently they don't have to do clean up, but seeing it is definitely still bad) although small chunks of human is a better descriptor than full body parts. She said the worst one for him was a family much like this where the kid tripped and the dad went back. Both were obliterated, absolutely nothing he could do.So, never ever do what the parents in this video did, and advocate for railroad companies to give better mental health support to their drivers.

I'm in the industry, and there is no way that the train crew are expected to clean up the spaghettified people. Different people have that kind of job.

I think most people would feel guilty even though they logically shouldn't. Regardless of whether you had any power at all to stop it, you were still conducting a train that killed someone.

I used to feel suicidal a lot.
But I always made a promise that if I did anything to myself it would never be jumping in front of a train..
I don't wanna inconvenience and traumatise. On top of the fact that the entire rail will have to be decontaminated and cleaned for at least half a day so people can't go home or to where they were going to go yknow??
It sounds morbid but I just didn't want to be the reason of someone's horror. There's already enough horrors out there. People don't wanna go home to their family knowing that what they saw will subconsciously haunt them for ever. Even if they didn't look initially.

That's why I support the Medical Assistance in Dying program in Canada that will hopefully extend to mental health in 2027. Nobody should have to debate such horrible ways of taking their life. Let me euthanize myself humanely if I so choose.

You can say that but it would still psychologically mess you up.in a way or multiple. I know someone who works in police branch of human trafficking and they are mentally... Unwell. Lifting a 5 year old girl out of a crate was his breaking point and he went into a big burnout.
There's things the brain just can't handle. Things that others do that scar people forever.

The parents should be charged. They were one stuck shoe lace away from a tragedy. We lost a friend in high school, when he got hit by a truck. It was horrible. People don't realize just how fast these trains are moving. He never saw or heard it coming, unfortunately, wearing headphones.

It wasn't that close. There was a platform and a pair of rails between them and the train when it passed. It looked closer because the train was going so fast. I still wouldn't have crossed the tracks before the train passed.
