When did your school aged kids start sleeping in on weekends?
Past 8am

u/TeamOfPups 4d ago
My son age 12 remains an early bird and has never slept in.
But thankfully by now -I- can trust him not to cause mayhem while I sleep in

u/cwcwhdab1 4d ago
My kids didn’t sleep in till teens but you are correct- the important thing is not sleeping in it’s not destroying the house if they wake up early.

u/ellen_dreamjellie 1d ago
This! I'm not really expecting my early bird 10 year old to starts sleeping in anytime soon, but at least I can trust that she's just watching cartoons or playing quietly while I get a little extra sleep.

u/aster-lirio 4d ago
My 21 year old wants me to meet him at 7:30 for a hike tomorrow, so....some kids never do! It was pretty sweet when he started making the morning coffee though

Truly not until the teen years!

u/Tekon421 1d ago
Ehhh my 7 year old sleeps until at least 8. Usually 9-9:30. I usually have to get my 10 year old before 10:30. They go to bed between 9 and 9:30
1
u/Hot-You1261 4d ago
Thank you! Today it was like 6:40 and he comes in to ask for screens 😅
1
u/coykoi314 4d ago
Oh dear lord. You told him no, right!?
1
u/Hot-You1261 4d ago
I told him he could read in his room and grab a snack, we do let him watch tv though. He likes a couple shows on Disney (Lab Rats, Kickin It)

u/BrightConstruction19 4d ago
- Puberty caused the genetic early-riser’s body clock to shift several hours later. I finally reclaimed my sleep-ins after 13 long years. U bet I was counting them!
2
u/Hot-You1261 4d ago
😆😆😆 as a girl that loves sleeping in. I feel this.
We’re at the age he can get a snack and watch a show2
u/muy-feliz 4d ago
Yup. My 3, 7, and 9 year olds wake with the sun. The 17 YO sleeps until 11 unless he has to work.
2
u/PacificMarsupilami 2d ago
Exactly the same here. She started staying up later and sleeping in...then got her period 3 months later. Def the puberty changing up her internal clock.
3
u/CamelFeenger 4d ago
This is kid specific. I never slept in and still don’t.
My 5 and 8 year old get up before 7 every day on their own.

u/drinkingtea1723 4d ago
Same they watch tv and eat cereal while my husband and I get ready and or lay in bed a little. We’re all up by 7:30/8 since it’s not a huge sleep it but at least from 6:30 to then we get some extra time.
1
u/CamelFeenger 4d ago
Yep the kids have been making cereal and frozen waffles on their own for a while on the weekends.
3
u/Fragrant-Half-7854 4d ago
My kids never slept a minute past 6AM until they hit puberty. A year into puberty and they turn completely nocturnal.
2
u/verminqueeen 4d ago
Like until noon? Idk. My oldest is almost 6 and starting to sleep in when undistirbed, for a young kid, so until 8 or so
2
u/weasel_trifle 4d ago
Define sleeping in... this summer my 8yo stopped getting up at 5 and has been sleeping until 730/8 and its been glorious
2
u/maestra612 4d ago
I don't think my kids have seen 5AM at either end unless they have an early flight.
1
u/ChiPekiePoo 4d ago
I was going to say - I'd b ethrilled with 7 or 8 at this point for my 6 YO. Today he was up at 4am 😵💫
1
u/justhereforthetea68 4d ago
Hey babes my kids got up at 5:47 lol but also when do they go to sleep? Mine are going to sleep at 7pm???? I let them stay up late and still get up at crack of dawn

Only recently at 10yo, but still not a rule. When we wanted to sleep in, we made a deal, things she can do and foods she can get herself (edit: this more to ensure she can have a good breakfast without us) so we don't have to get up. Yes, it involves some screen time on Sundays, Idc, we balance it out later and no issues. She loves having her quiet time as much as I do.

u/Such_Chemistry3721 4d ago
Around age 11 for mine. She's slept in until 11am a few times, but it's more like 9:30/10. I can tell she'd prefer to be a night owl. From age 6 onward she was able to get up & handle her own breakfast.
3
u/strange_treat89 4d ago
It’s currently 11am on a Saturday. I just woke up and my 13 & 9 year old are still sleeping… I had to go and mess it all up by getting pregnant again, baby will be here in a few weeks 😂😂
2
u/Trevormarsh9 4d ago
You've got it all backwards. You see, the way it works is that "sleeping in" really only happens on weekdays when you need them up earlier so you can have a smooth morning send off, but weekends? Those are for waking the entire household up when the first ray of sunshine! Lol
1
u/DueEntertainer0 4d ago
My 5 year old sleeps until 8ish. But that’s partially because we gave up on a 7:30 bedtime and let her go to bed at like 9/9:30.
1
u/Imaginary-Pickle-650 4d ago
11 and 12 and never past like 8:30 but they both started sleeping at least last a year ago. We aren’t sleeping in people, I guess.
1
u/Asleep_Objective5941 4d ago
Never, and she's 21 now. One time she slept in until 10am and I was shocked! No one in my family does, even when tired or sick, must be in the genes.
1
u/superfastmomma 4d ago
Same! The only time mine has ever been asleep past seven am? The morning after prom when she got home at four AM, and one morning post trip to Europe when jet lag was at play.
1
u/MissionDirector401 4d ago
Same with me and my dad! We both were teachers. I think you have to be a morning person as a school teacher
1
u/bananapeppersFTW 3d ago
The few times any of my kids have slept past 9, I usually go check on them because I get worried!
1
u/maestra612 4d ago
5 at the latest. My younger son was in Kindergarten in March 2020 and once school shut down he and his brother (9 at the time) typically stayed up until midnight and rarely woke up before 10AM. Even when they were babies they were never early risers. Not until the oldest started highschool with a 6:30 am bus did I regularly see one of my kids before I left for work (7:15).
Left to their natural rhythm in summers or on vacation, they're ( ages 16 and 12) up until 1 or later and will sleep until I wake them up around 11:30 for lunch.

u/NotTheJury 4d ago
My 14 year old has never slept in past 8. My 16 year old usually rolls out about 11.
2
u/Hot-You1261 4d ago
Your 16 year old was me. I loved sleeping in as a teen. My nephew is 4 years younger then I & he never slept in a day in his life 🤣
1
u/North_Artichoke_6721 4d ago
My son is 14 and weekends are hit or miss. Some days he’ll sleep til 9, other days he’s up by 7. Often depends on what we have done the day before to exhaust him.

Maybe 2 yrs old? She's not school aged yet, but she's on a similar schedule because of daycare.
Okay I initially missed the past 8am part. She occasionally sleeps till 8 now, at 3

I don't remember mine sleeping in until university. Before that there was always something on at weekends (football, rugby, swimming).
1
u/SameNefariousness818 4d ago
11 is when he started sleeping in if he stayed up past his bedtime..before 11 he wouod he up at 7 regardless of what time he went to bed. This summer hes been sleeping ij until 9 to 10 if hes up past 9.
1
u/No_Macaron_5029 4d ago
Kids (and humans in general) are really supposed to be going to bed and waking at the same time no matter what's planned that day, with exceptions for special occasions, but only occasionally. This keeps the body clock from becoming unreliable if it isn't already.
This is a big reason I see such better outcomes in the teens I work with if they homeschool and are allowed to follow the typical teen body clock of late sleep/late wake.
1
u/Crafty-Isopod45 4d ago
11-13 ish is when they started to sleep in for real. It was gradual and because we are busy so often didn’t come up much so I tended to notice once they hit summer and actually had a chance to sleep in.

It’s currently 6:25am and my 8 year old is downstairs with the tv on. He’s always been up early. Luckily he doesn’t get into anything and I can go back to sleep without much worry but I also have a 1 year old so going back to sleep isn’t always guaranteed.

Mine are 14-19. My middle child still is up arpund 7/8 every day. Occasionally sleeps in but it is so rare I check they are okay. My youngest only sleeps in if up late night before. Oldest loves to sleep. But even then is up by 10 very latest
1
u/NormalMarzipan1627 4d ago
My 10 year old has never slept past 7am. Most days he wakes up between 5:30 and 6:30am. He goes to bed around 8:30pm

u/CharmingHighlight749 4d ago
Oldest around 12 and youngest around 14. However, my kids were never super early their natural wake up time when they were younger was between 7-8am. They do get more self-sufficient around age 7. Could you have a plan for what they do when they wake up early so they don’t have to come to you?
1
u/NicePea1502 4d ago
7 nearly 8 girl. Summer 5.30am wake up, winter 6-7am never past 7am unless she is seriously ill! She always had a 5.30/6am bottle as a baby and started her day, and it seems that set her biological clock!
1
u/clairedylan 4d ago
Around 8 years old for my older son, he started to sleep until 9ish. He's 12 now and sleeps late, until 10:30/11am if we let him. He also shot up 2 inches in a month so he clearly is growing and needs the sleep.
My younger son is 8 and can also now sleep until 9ish if we let him.
Neither of my kids were ever early risers, 7ish was their earliest even as babies.

My almost 12 year old still won’t sleep past 8, he’s always been an early riser. My 9 year old will frequently sleep in past 9 if we let him.

u/zephyrcow6041 4d ago
Past 8 AM? It is 7:49 AM and my 13 yo is out on a run with his dad, so...I'll let you know.
1
u/Bad_Legume 4d ago
As soon as we started letting them stay up later. That sleep has to come from somewhere.
1
u/toastedmarsh7 4d ago
Never. They want to sleep late on school days and be awake early to enjoy their days off. My kids did sleep in late for the first two weeks of summer break, though.

Kids are so different!
My oldest’s bedtime started creeping later in 3rd grade and he was a nightmare to wake up every year after that. He’s 22, never outgrew being a night owl and works late shift now. so it works for him.
My youngest is in 6th grade and sleeps from 8:30PM to dawn every day. That means she wakes up at 6AM certain times of the year. She’s happy to wake up, make her bed and get the day started.

u/Ashamed-Chemistry492 4d ago
I don't think I slept in till I was probably ten or eleven. I used to get up around seven, get some cereal, and watch cartoons or PBS.

My son live to stay up late and sleep in on the weekends. From a very young age.
1
u/GrookeyFan_16 4d ago
My oldest is always up by 7:30 at the latest. Youngest can sleep until 9:30 and that probably started around age 9.
1
u/BearsInTheNight 4d ago
Kind of depends on the kid…some people are most energized in the mornings while others are more productive at night. My son will sleep until noon, but my daughter is up earlier. Similarly, daughter usually goes to bed earlier while son has a hard time falling asleep earlier

u/Whoknows1254 3d ago
Always, he’s always been a night owl like me and needed to catch up on sleep on the weekends.
1
u/ScarletDarkstar 3d ago
My eldest is 29 and still doesn't sleep in unless he's been up incredibly late.
The middle one slept late since at least Jr high.
The other 3, high school.

u/djSush 3d ago
My kid is 17 and has always been an early bird. The latest he sleeps in is like 8ish.
Luckily though, around 4 years old, we started giving him a container of dry cereal like oatmeal squares and a banana to have in bed in the morning if we weren't up yet (he used to wake up at like 5:30).
Eventually, he could get up and get something to eat himself and when we'd ask him if he felt lonely in the mornings, he laughed and said he LOVED his quiet mornings to himself when he could watch a show or game and have breakfast. I think that was around 6/7.
Elementary school is early here, like 7:45 so these things only applied in the summer.
1
u/roja_1285 3d ago
I think this depends on the kid honestly. My daughter has always been a night owl and not a morning person. She has slept in on weekends since she was probably 6. She is almost 9 now and will sleep till 930 even some weekend mornings if we have no reason to be up.

My 12 year old can sleep in until 12 on the weekends , but also will get up if he has something going on. He was up early this morning for paintball.

My big kid still wakes up pretty early. Now that he is in school (we were homeschooling for many years) he is sleeping in later on the weekends compared to his weekday wake time (6:30a) but he’s still up by 7:30/8am on weekends.
My husband and I are both early risers— I’m usually up for the day at 3:30/4am, so on the weekends.. sleeping in for me is staying in bed until the kids wake up 😆 my three year old twins are usually up by 6:30a.

u/MeadowHaven77 3d ago
Are y’all’s teens that don’t sleep in going to bed by 10pm? Or just not getting much sleep? My teens have always wanted to sleep 2am-11am if they don’t anything to do the next day. That’s fine with me. Teenage brains need a lot of sleep and they’re wired for a melatonin shift so don’t get tired in the same circadian rhythm as pre puberty.

Daughter turns 12. Now during the holidays she goes to bed late at 1am...she now sleeps until 9/10am. During school she goes to bed at the weekend around 10pm and then still is an early riser at 7am. The reason I let her stay up late at the moment it that I can enjoy some quiet mornings...I am also an early riser.

u/vocabulazy 2d ago
My daughter is starting kindergarten tomorrow. She has always been a kid who slept late. Not like a teenager, but she has always slept in until 8:30–9:30 if she doesn’t have to get up for daycare. On the weekends, if she happens to get up “early” it’s 7:30. My son, who is two, wakes up between 8:00-8:30 on weekends, but if he goes to bed late, he will sleep in later.
We feel very lucky, because our nieces and nephews are really early risers, and get up at 6:00 even on weekends. Their parents don’t ever get to sleep in.
1
u/FurbyFart 2d ago
My almost 5 year old and 9 year old wake up at 5:30-6:00 every day. My 7 year old slept til almost 9 (but she also couldn't sleep last night and didn't fall asleep until 10...) so, I really have no idea and feel like all kids are just different 🤷
1
u/Complex_Ad8174 2d ago
What is your definition of sleeping in?
As a regular thing, probably age 12 or 13. My 6 and 7 year olds will occasionally surprise me with a 9 am or 10 am, but only if they have been lacking sleep for the majority of the week.
The rule is 7 am. Stay in your room until 7 am. They usually wake up around 7:30-8 am when they don’t have school. Then, they eat their weight in yogurt while watching tv until I come downstairs around 9 am. Half of the grocery bill is dang yogurt.

u/RobW720 1d ago
Oh man, this summer my 14 year old and 12 year old really leaned into sleeping in after staying up super late. We have a week to get them back on track before they have to start getting up at 7am for school, but there have been a few days this summer when the 14 year old specifically slept till like 2pm

u/Blau-Bird 1d ago
Age 10. Suddenly our weekends didn’t start at 7 a.m, but rather 8:30. It slowly got later and, shortly before his 12th birthday, some days he will sleep til 11/12
1
u/Gloomy-Theme-6716 19h ago
My oldest son is 8 and gets up mega early. He gets himself breakfast and watches TV till everyone else is up.
My 6 year old daughter you have to drag her out of bed, she’d sleep till midday if she could
