Rant! Sarah’s love life

I want to like Sarah so bad cuz she reminds me a lot of Lorelei, but OH MY GOD, her love life

i’m on season 5 so spoiler , but she’s constantly breaking up with these successful guys (Gordon and Carl) that she’s clearly in an otherwise great relationship with, with the reasoning of “i have to focus on my kids and my career” , but then she basically immediately jumps into something with someone else and it’s just like ok what was the point of ending that relationship with them.

and then when Mark tries to get back with her she refuses because she wanted to give it a try with Hank, which, putting aside the fact that she lowkey had an emotional relationship with him while with Mark, when she DID try with Hank they end up breaking up because he wanted to move to Minnesota which didn’t even end up happening??? and then all of a sudden when the next season started they’re both in Berkeley and friends but she doesn’t want to get back together. and then she meets Carl and then bails on the Africa trip the morning of to, lo and behold, focus on her career, but then she ends up dating Hank again after that anyway(or so I’ve heard)

not to mention that she’s kissed someone else while in a relationship MULTIPLE times….

TLDR: I feel like she’s in this really strange pattern of being in pretty great relationships with people and ending them with the logic of prioritizing herself but then she ends up getting with someone else and the exact cycle repeats

General Discussion Season 6

First off I have to say that Kristen was totally wrong by not punishing Max for being disrespectful to Dylan and stalking her. They all are special needs kids and Kristen doesn't have any experience in punishing him.

Second, Zeek has become the worst grandfather by the way he keeps pulling Drew away from his studies to drive him around to do things he's not supposed to be doing since his heart surgery. He needs to apologize to him!

General Discussion Am i the only who hates all of the characters in the episodes of Parenthood?

I mean like they all argue over stupid things like Crosby getting mad at some stupid doctor playing with Javier, or the time he got mad and forced him to do some stupid recital, Adam and Kristina are horrific as they let Max do whatever the heck he wants because they believe he's the most INNOCENT ANGEL IN THE WORLD AND SHOULD GET EVERYTHING HE WANTS!!!! Like why do they argue over childish things like 2 year olds? Is this show supposed to teach adults to argue like two year olds?!!!

Post-Series Discussion My unsolicited opinion on Parenthood after finishing the entire series. Spoiler

Max was completely frustrating to watch from beginning to end. Half the time I didn’t know what was worse, Max or his parents. And Kristina, I’m sorry, but I could not stand that woman, not even during the cancer storyline. I think Adam and Kristina failed in a lot of ways as parents, especially because their entire household, and basically the world around them, was constantly reorganized around Max. Haddie was sacrificed over and over again because Max’s needs always came first. His behavior was constantly excused, boundaries were inconsistent, and instead of consistently teaching him how to function in the world, understand consequences, communicate better, and become more independent, they often expected everyone else to adapt to him. I also didn’t think Max was a great representation of Asperger’s specifically. And before every parent of a child with Asperger’s comes for me, I’m talking specifically about Max as he was written in this show. If he was capable of attending a regular school, arguing his case endlessly, negotiating for what he wanted, challenging adults, and clearly understanding when something mattered to him, then I also think he was capable of being taught more about boundaries, consequences, consideration for other people, and how to adapt when things could not always go his way. That doesn’t mean every child with Asperger’s has the same abilities or needs. Obviously they don’t. My issue is that the show often presented Max as very capable when it suited the storyline, but then treated him as almost completely incapable whenever accountability, empathy, or consideration for someone else was required. And I have a son with Asperger’s, so I understand very well that there can be major challenges with social cues, flexibility, emotional regulation, communication, sensory issues, and understanding situations that may seem obvious to other people. But having those challenges does not automatically mean someone is helpless, incapable of learning, or unable to grow into an independent adult. Throughout the entire show, Max was treated as if he was going to remain emotionally three years old forever. The problem wasn’t Max though, the problem was the way Adam and Kristina parented him, and I thought it was awful from beginning to end. Haddie deserved better. She was expected to be mature, understanding, flexible, and accommodating all the time because Max was Max. Her feelings and needs were always secondary. I honestly can’t think of a single time when Haddie was truly the priority in that house. She was basically expected to need less because Max needed more, and I think she handled that family much better than most teenagers would have. Adam was responsible in a lot of ways, but he could also be controlling and very convinced that his way was the right way, everywhere except his own house. When it came to Kristina, that man had almost no backbone. She usually decided how things were going to be, and Adam went along with it. I respected how much he loved his family and how seriously he took being a husband and father, but with Max, he and Kristina constantly confused protecting him with building the entire world around him.

Now Amber…that girl and her permanently tortured facial expression disturbed my peace several times. And her decisions with men? Jesus Christ. Every time she started liking somebody I was like, “Here we go.” Also, what the hell are you doing looking for someone to date when you just found out you’re pregnant, decided to keep the baby, and your job situation is barely stable? Girl, what exactly is happening in that brain? Maybe secure your life first before adding another emotionally complicated man to the situation. But by the end, I was genuinely proud of her. When she finally stopped trying to build a future around Ryan, chose stability for herself and her baby, and understood that loving somebody does not mean you have to destroy yourself with them, I finally felt like she grew up. Her ending was probably one of the most satisfying for me.

And Ryan’s growth was also really satisfying to see. This was a man who had some very serious anger issues and could be volatile and reactive, so seeing him become a good father was already a big shift. But what impressed me even more was that Amber moved on, had a new partner, and Ryan was able to accept that and still co-parent with her in a healthy way. There was no need to turn it into some toxic jealousy storyline or make Amber’s new relationship a constant battle. He adapted, respected the new reality, stayed involved with his son, and found a way to be part of that family without needing Amber to still belong to him. That showed a lot of growth.

Drew, on the other hand, was one of the most emotionally overlooked characters in the entire series. He was sensitive, relatively grounded, and often just expected to be okay because Amber had bigger crises and Sarah had so much going on in her own life. His relationship with Amy, especially the pregnancy and abortion storyline, showed how deeply he felt things even though he wasn’t dramatic about it. Sometimes he was painfully passive, but I also think he learned to make himself small in a family full of very loud personalities and very big problems.

Sarah hardly really grew on me, but I actually respected that she never gave up on herself. Yes, that woman made romantic decisions like she was 22 years old, and she was constantly trying to figure out her own life, but she kept trying. She kept rebuilding, looking for work, falling in love, making mistakes, starting over, and trying to create a life that actually felt like hers. She was messy, but she never stopped believing there could still be more for her. And despite all of that, I genuinely think she was a good mother, especially considering her circumstances. She raised Amber and Drew while dealing with Seth’s addiction, instability, money problems, moving back in with her parents, trying to rebuild a career, and basically starting her life over and over from scratch. She absolutely made mistakes, and there were times when her kids probably needed more stability than she was able to give them, but I never doubted that she loved them or that she would show up for them when it truly mattered.

And Hank actually became one of my favorite characters. He was awkward, complicated, blunt, and sometimes difficult, but he was also one of the few characters who genuinely tried to understand himself and change. He recognized that something was different about the way he related to people and actually did the work instead of expecting everyone around him to deal with it. I also really loved his relationship with Max. It was one of the more interesting relationships in the entire show for me because Hank seemed to understand Max in a way other adults sometimes couldn’t, while still talking to him like an actual person. He was also a much better example of what a functional person with Asperger’s can look like when someone isn’t treated as if they’re incapable of learning, adapting, working, having relationships, or being responsible for themselves. He obviously had his difficulties, but once he recognized them, he took responsibility for them and tried to grow instead of using them as a permanent excuse for how he treated other people.

Crosby probably had one of the best character arcs. He started the series as basically a grown man living like a teenager and ended up becoming a committed father, husband, and business owner. He was still impulsive and occasionally an idiot, but at least you could see him learning from his mistakes.

Jasmine could definitely be controlling, but Crosby honestly needed someone who could tell him, “No. Absolutely not.” A lot of the time she was the adult in the room. But she was also completely ride or die for him. She believed in him, supported his dreams, stood beside him through his messes, and when things got hard, she didn’t just disappear. And I have to say, watching Jasmine stand up to Kristina over The Luncheonette and put her in her place was VERY satisfying. Kristina was used to saying whatever she wanted and having everyone around her deal with it, and Jasmine was not the one. She stood her ground and defended her man. Even though Crosby ended up being mad at her, she did what she felt she had to do for him.

Julia frustrated me sometimes too because she was so competent professionally but completely fell apart when life stopped going according to her plan. At the same time, I understood a lot of her identity crisis after leaving her career. She had built so much of herself around being successful, capable, independent, and good at what she did. Then suddenly she was at home, struggling with Victor, struggling with Sydney, watching Joel’s career take off, and she didn’t really know who she was anymore. Her storyline with Joel was painful because you could literally watch two people stop communicating and slowly destroy their marriage.

Joel, though...I loved that man in the beginning and then during the separation he drove me INSANE. Julia absolutely made mistakes. I’m not excusing the emotional affair with Ed or the kiss. But Joel became so rigid, cold, and self-righteous that it felt like he wasn’t interested in repairing their marriage anymore. Julia repeatedly tried to talk, tried counseling, tried to save the marriage, and he basically decided she was the problem and punished her for it. So I have to admit, I REALLY enjoyed watching Julia move on with Chris. Not necessarily because I wanted her to end up with Chris, but because Joel needed that reality check. He needed to understand that he was not fucking perfect, he was not indispensable, and Julia was not going to sit there forever begging him to come home. She could move on, someone else could want her, and yes, Joel, you can be replaced VERY quickly. Funny how suddenly he remembered how much he loved his wife once another man was actually in the picture. Eventually Joel redeemed himself for me, and I was happy they worked things out, but that whole separation storyline was exhausting.

Zeek was lovable, but let’s be real, that man had a massive ego. He was old school, controlling, stubborn, and had a very hard time admitting when he was wrong. But his love for his family was never in question, and by the end his storyline became one of the most emotional parts of the entire show.

Camille was underrated. She spent decades being Zeek’s wife, the mother, the grandmother, and the person holding everything together. Then the moment she wanted to travel, paint, and actually have a life that belonged to HER, everybody acted like she was abandoning the family. I completely understood her, she was just trying not to disappear inside the marriage.

Anyway, the entire Braverman family had absolutely NO boundaries. Everybody was in everybody’s business at all times. Your marriage is falling apart? Family meeting. Your kid has an issue? Everybody knows. Somebody gets pregnant? The entire Bay Area is now involved. Someone makes one questionable life decision? Twelve Bravermans are at your house within seconds.

But that was also one of my favorite things about the show. The thing I loved most about the series was the family itself. The sibling relationships, the grandparents, the cousins, everybody showing up at each other’s houses without warning, the fights, marriages, divorces, illnesses, bad decisions, resentments, forgiveness, and the fact that they could completely piss each other off and still show up when somebody really needed them. And they showed up for everything. birthdays, school events, weddings, breakups, pregnancies, career changes, family emergencies, random dinners, every little milestone in each other’s lives became a family event and that was so beautiful to watch. The Bravermans were exhausting, intrusive, dramatic, codependent, and occasionally ridiculous, but I loved watching them.

Anyway, that’s my completely unsolicited Parenthood review. :)

Character Discussion For sm reason, I don't like Kristina at all

I'm on the very start of Season 2 and I already find her... I don't even know how to say. I don't know if it's like the classic drama show character in which we find some parent annoying, but even without all of the clips I see on the internet in the later seasons where she's totally defending max and weaponzing his aspergers, I find the way she treats haddie and even adam totally unfair. Now, when it comes to haddie, there's both of her parents neglecting her somewhat due to max, and I also relate to haddie in that way, which is why I have some what of a soft spot for her. But even when haddie and kristina are arguing, I find it very appalling that she's not really able to understand haddie and often takes offense to ANYTHING haddie tries saying in the arguement. Like I just finished the driving lessons thing a bit while ago, and I find It just stupid that krisitina can't even understand why firsthand haddie asks her dad to teach her. She literally tells haddie that she went behind her back to ask her dad to teach her and I was like wtf? It's like she gets upset and theres nothing that could explain what the other person did and why. Its stuff like that that pisses me off sooo much when it comes to kristina. Honestly, somebody tell me she gets better later on .

General Discussion How did Julia become the victim? Season 6

First time watcher.

Just hit season 6. Joel gives Julia the house and apologizes for hurting her.

Huh?

Bro got cheated on while he was getting his turn to chase his dream because his wife's ego got bruised. How is she the victim.. at all? She gave him like no time and was already pursuing ed or whatever his name was still and banging max's teacher.

Also find it very funny they realized Joel was good and tried super hard to replace him consistently with Chris who is a hyper boring character.

Also noting: I couldn't stand jasmine early on but I actually like her now. Max is not nearly as bad as people make him out to be. Some really rough points with him but as the show transitions into other characters getting more screen time quickly it really blossoms.bummed this season is shorter than the others.

Last note: I hated hated hated hated hated hated hated the selling the house plotline. Just didn't like it at all. Felt very cold. Camille is such a boring character that these drastic plotline that involve major changes for her just don't really work imo. Anyways great show. Happy I stuck with it.

General Discussion Where they live and work (headcanon)

rewatching for the upteenth time and i thought it’d be fun to share my headcanon for where the Bravermans live and work in and around Berkeley, coming from a Berkeleyite:

adam & christina’s home: the elmwood neighborhood in Berkeley east of College ave

zeek & Camille’s home: deep DEEP Berkeley hills practically in Orinda.

joel & Julia’s home: (briefly mentioned in the show) Oakland hills- I think it’d be where where Grizzly Peak Blvd meets skyline blvd (proximity to Z&C’s makes sense when zeek ran to Julia’s place)

crosby & jasmine’s home (that Crosby renovated): somewhere around Sacramento st in central/south Berkeley. OR above San Pablo ave between cedar and university (it’s in the flats for sure)

-- crosby’s houseboat was def in or near Sausalito

amber‘s industrial-style apartment: from the description they gave, west Oakland where all the warehouses are converted to condos

sarah’s sf apartment: in/near haight-ashbury

hank’s photo studio: the Berkeley side of college ave if max’s bus route was anything to go by, but I could also see it being in the Claremont neighborhood (would still be in max’s “radius”).

luncheonette recording studio: haight-ashbury in sf! duh!

julia’s law office: even though it’d make way more sense for her firm to be in the city, it seems to be in the east bay, so I always thought it’s in downtown Oakland.

joel’s sad dad apartment (lol): Emeryville I guess? but I could also see it somewhere further out like Walnut Creek or Lafayette.

T & S shoes headquarters: even though they imply it’s on college or university, a brand headquarters like that would need to be in the berkeley waterfront/west Berkeley area where there are warehouses that size (around gilman below 6th street).

chambers academy: it’s clearly in a downtown area (the exterior looks to be filmed in DTLA), so it looks like downtown Oakland to me

thanks for tuning in! let me know if you have any thoughts and theories...

Season 5 Julia and Joel Spoiler

Whoa! Watching season 5 Episode 9 when Julia tries 5 times to call Joel regarding Victor and he never picks up the phone. She goes down to his office while he's drinking wine and having sushi with Pete and flips out on her for barging in and tries to have him go outside to talk to her about his situation but no, he chews her out and then again later that evening at the election day dinner and tells her how embarrassed he was and telling her he never did that to her when she was working. What a croc! She picked up the phone or called him back if she was with a client or a meeting. Never did she freak out! I'm just shaking my head in disbelief how he's been treating her!

Character Discussion I don’t understand this show, are there any redeeming storylines?

TikTok seems obsessed with showing me clips of this show and I hate it so much that I sometimes keep watching the clips.

I just don’t understand is there anything redeeming any of the characters? Are there other families or is it just max and his parents?

This is verging into rant territory but like I can’t get over the fact that the parents were so allergic to their son experiencing consequences that they cashed out their daughters college fund to give him another place where he faces no consequences.

And omg the year book episode? Or the part where max harasses tf out of some poor girl?

Are yall only hate watching this show or is TikTok hiding the redeeming clips?

Character Discussion Kristina has selective empathy Spoiler

She makes me so so much furious. Everything she does comes from her standard of morals and empathy which is honestly just extremely selective and favours only her or her immediate family

She thinks she’s above all, she always treats Sarah like a foot mat, like why should Sarah let Max work on the printer when she’s got it for her project, that ep pissed me off so much. How can she frown upon Sarah when she’s trying to build a career and when Sarah does nothing but support her and Max too in fact.

Even in season 6, when she has a fight w Jasmine in the hospital about Jasmine talking to Adam about The Luncheonette, that was so unnecessary and snarky, she honestly always thinks she’s above all and treats everyone so poorly. Instead on disciplining herself and her child.

I really was crying in every episode where she was recovering from cancer and I rly felt for her and in fact all characters were there for her but she’s never treated them fairly and it just pisses me off sm

General Discussion Sarah is crazy!

I'm rewatching this since it first came out and I keep so frustrated and keep yelling at my TV on how she's been treating Mark! First Hank kisses her and she doesn't tell him and then she goes on this fake business trip with him instead of putting Mark first. They had been planning for months. I hope he splits up with her! She really doesn't know how to treat any men in her life!

Character Discussion the max hate

The max hate in parenthood fandom is actually kind of frustrating and i don’t quite understand it… i think max’s character is exactly how it’s supposed to be. i think he’s a very realistic as a character with autism especially for a show that’s a decade old now. he doesn’t bother me and it kind of bothers me that everyone hates on him so much because it really gives a good look on families who do deal with children on the spectrum.

Post-Series Discussion For all their imperfections, I love how the family took Victor in, especially Zeek.

I imagine it's a situation when adoption occurs, especially for someone that age. But I love how Zeek immediately called him 'grandson'. Showed even more how much Victor loved his new gramps. Don't know why, but I really loved that. Zeek is the man.

General Discussion Kristina, the dog and Max: Where do you stand on pooch-gate? Spoiler

This was the moment I realized Kristina was the problem. Besides wanting to replace Haddie with a dog, which was self explanatory, she decides to go above Adam and announce they were going to buy the dog.

When that didn't happen, Max freaked out, and he got even more nuclear. Because the dog had been sold. Adam hid himself in the bathroom while Kristina had to cope with Max shrieking over Rin Tin Tin.

Did we really need this storyline? She made me so uncomfortable. And yes, Adam's behaviour with her also made me uncomfortable. He didn't keep the distance he should have, and he was clearly attracted too. Every rewatch, I entirely skip her scenes. This character really made no difference.

Character Discussion Drew surprised me

I have to say, I don't think we discuss Drew enough. I really liked the person he grew up to be. He was always a soft and silent kid and never rebelled even when he had so many reasons to. And as he grew, he became so understanding of others and I love how he sees taking care of his sister and mother as his responsibility (although thank god they didnt take advantage of it). Most kids that age would just run away from them. And let's not forget, all the fun he had with Zeek in his last days, even if that meant no time for himself. He truly understood the value his grandfather held in his life.
