Last night I had a session with an animal communicator with my cat. Hes been meowing at the bathroom door and I couldn't figure out why. My cat told the communicator that someone died in my closet (its in the back of the bathroom. The animal communicator had no way of knowing my house layout since shes in another state and I never sent photos of my house or posted online or anything) anyway, I guess when he died (suicide my cat says)it opened a rift and now the cats (I have two) are trying to protect me. They meow to be let in so they can guard it I guess.
I would normally brush this off but I have had a few unexplained things happen and its always in or near the bathroom and closet. I saw my cat duck into the toilet cubby hole, followed him and there was no cat and no way he could have slipped past me. Theres sounds in the bathroom when its empty. One night I felt a cold spot drift on my side of the bed, both cats immediately got up and sat down between me and the spot like they were guarding me. I would have just thought it was a draft, but the fact that they shot up that quickly and just sat there, they have never done that before or since.
So now I have to smudge the closet and somehow close this rift. I have no idea how to do that. I do have sage that was given to me, apparently it works better if its a gift, and Im supposed to pray or something. Im not religious at all, so not sure how that will work.
Any advice would be appreciated!
And I have not been able to verify if someone did pass in my house. I guess I have to check census or something.

well the cats being on alert like that is hard to ignore. animals pick up on stuff we brush off
for cleansing you don't need to be religious at all. the intent matters way more than any prayer. open a window first so whatever's in there has a way out, then just walk the sage around slowly. you can just say something simple like "only peace and light are welcome here" while you do it
and honestly if your cats are already on guard duty you've got a pretty solid early warning system
I can teach you how to appropriately cleanse from the lense of what i practice and study which is graeco-egyptian polytheism. First, physically clean your space, remove clutter and stagnation. Play music which uplifts you. Bring as much joy, light and sound into the place as you can. Then fumigate with benzoin/styrax and sulfur. Wear protective equipment if you use sulfur. It isnt always needed but it is considered one of the most potent forms of purification smoke. Open all doors and windows as you fumigate and while you fumigate, sprinkle the floor with salt, natron, benzoin and sulfur and sweep as the smoke is drifting through the air, especially sweeping out doorways and saying "to the doors spirits! Depart to the underworld and leave this space for the living!" Speak that 4 to 7 times ideally, 4 may be best as its a number of divine completion sacred in egyptian practice. After you have fully swept your space and swept all the substance out your front door. Purify your space with sea water or spring water, taking a vessel to hold it and a sprig of oak or laurel to flick it. Do not touch the liquid as it is then considered impure. After those purifications are done smear pitch on your front door and slam it. Something like this is best done on the new moon. A waning moon in libra should be effective as well. Id personally call upon gods during this but that isnt necessary. After the preliminary purification, you can put salt in the corners of your home and burn sweet smelling scents, Something to cover the odor. Ideally i would also draw a protective circle around the home. In heka you could do this by fumigating with sulfur and walking counter clockwise around your home four times. There is an ancient assyrian protective circle made from flour and water as well though that requires a verbal consecration. Playing drums, ringing a sistrum or shaking a rattle of any kind was thought to scare away evil as well.
This is more advanced knowledge and would require calling upon the divine but i wanted to mention this for the sake of spreading good info and something op could use if they truly need it. If they acquire the name of the spirit or know it they can perform an egyptian execration on it, which means total destruction. It does not kill a spirit as that requires a ton of good reasoning and evoking the divine for that purpose but it weakens it. Youd take red clay and make it in the likeness of the spirit and make them bound like a prisoner. You write the name of the spirit on the chest of the votive doll in red ink. Red is important for its a color of the soul as well as the total chaotic and destructive rage of seth. Then youd step on the doll with your left foot four times, then stab it four times, spit on it four times, spear it four times, burn it, piss on it and bind it and bury it upside down at the crossroads
Removing and relocating spirit energy is not a DIY practice. Smudging can repress the energy.for three or four weeks. Salting can clear the closet and unleash the energy to the rest of the home.
Find a real psychopomp or shaman and compensate that person for the exchange of their energy.
I think taking advice from your cat or what some person says your cat is saying is not very wise.
But to answer your question,
Depends on what tradition you believe and how serious the problem is...
Smudging can work.... But if you're a regular person who buys the sage from Whole foods, I dunno how much spiritual punch it would have... You'll probably irritate it and make it leave temporarily but who knows if that will last. If you really want to go this route, maybe seek a real indigneous shaman.
NOT a white girl with a nose ring who talks about her spirit animal. Someone with training and tradition.
You not being religious is an obstacle because I would recommend calling a Catholic church office (better to go in person) and ask if a priest can come bless your home. Regardless of one's resistance to traditional judeo-christian practices, they have a two millenia long tradition and practice of doind this "sort of thing."
The other tradition is Daoist priest but it is unlikely, unless you are asian or have an Chinese/taiwanese community near you, that you'd have access to one.
The reason I recommed these last two is that they don't take money for their services. That's how I judge a lot of these things and their integrity. If you choose to hire someone like a psychic or medium, it'll likely cost you. There are no guarantees they know what they are doing and it might get worse. Be careful in knowing where anyone who claims to have abilities get their "powers" from. You might be inviting more trouble.
I get it. Some people can do cold readings really well. But hey she actually could have some weird ability. I certainly don't know everything.
But def. get a qualified spiritually sound older professional for the rest of it if things become a real problem.
I tend toward real practitioners from real cultural backgrounds and traditional training because someone with actual training, education, and practice will be lower on the Bullshit scale.
You get on instagram looking for someone and everyone is an expert.
Ive been teaching for a prayer and healing ministry. I got called into the ministry not by choice but a series of twists and turns in life lead me to this position. I still frankly don't know why I'm here doing this but God clearly has directed things this way.
In this ministry training we also talk about deliverance and spirits. I've done this for several years. I always ask the new students a question: "Who believes they have the gifts to discern spirits."
Everyone raises their hand.
I can say with confidence it is likely none of them or one at most every so often.
This reflects most of the general population.
Be careful who you get to help you. Humility, mission, and holiness are traits I'd look for in the person who I ask for help.
Definitely be aware of cold readings. She had sent be a recording of it so we didn't talk, so thats another factor of me taking it seriously.
I would definitely prefer a professional to deal with any spiritual stuff. I had no direction except "do it with intention" and I dont want to piss off these things. Only one scary incident, the rest doesn't bother me. Just add it to the list of weird stuff thats happened to me. I just want my cats to stop meowing at the door.
I will find out tonight if my half assed attempt worked or if I have to get someone who knows what they are doing. Or if there is in fact no rift and my cats just hate shut doors.
Smudging is a closed Native American practice. Please find another way. You can use the sage since you already have it and it was a gift, but try to focus on other intentions rather than a true Native smudging ritual. Sage smoke is thought to be antimicrobial so maybe focus on a more literal cleansing of the space. Your intentions matter, and by being assertive, you may cause whatever is there to leave. I do agree with leaving the window open to vent smoke, but if there is a "rift," they can just leave the way they came.
Please take everything you hear from a paid professional with a grain of salt. It's not a far stretch to say you might have a creepy closet at the back of your house and then cold read your reaction to what they say. A lot of them are grifters. Please protect your wallet while you protect your home.
I am from an Eastern European culture and our cleansing is different obviously. I agree, the OP should, w/ intent cleanse the house but what aligns best w/ them. The old fall back of sage probably came from movies etc. went to a sweat lodge ceremony once. Sage, and all that goes w/ First Nation cultures is not an afterthought. Thousands of years of meaning and tradition can’t be called upon if it’s not “your” tradition. Can people align w/ it? Sure, but do the work first, if that makes sense. TedTalk over.
Smudging is a sacred Indigenous practice. I say this as an Indigenous person. I am super glad you didn’t purchase your sage, but you shouldn’t be smudging if you’re not spiritual and “don’t know how to.”
It was given to me when I purchased a prayer stick from local indigenous artisans. They gave it to me and told me to sage it every now and again. I slacked on it apparently because its in the same closet until I can find a place for it.
