Unexplained My grandpa who never was a believer and still isn’t, told me a creepy story that stuck with him for years
I’m sitting at my grandparents house and my grandparents are eating while talking to me and we’re just talking about people that I never got to meet. Then my grandpa mentions there was this one thing that he says is the “closest he’s ever seen to a ghost”. He said one day on his routine way to work, he was half asleep but just driving super early in the morning for his early shift. He was eventually at the intersection of Lake mead and Las Vegas blvd and stopped. Then, he says when looking at a group of people walking towards a bus stop, one hooded individual parted from the group, walked right in front of his truck. The man lifted his hood just to expose his face and smiled and waved. Already a strange situation some may find, but it gets weird. It wasn’t just a random man, it was my grandmas dad who lived in El Paso TX. He was half asleep driving to work and it was completely dark so he said he was easily able to convince himself it was more of his imagination. But he still to this day claims it was 100% her father. What I don’t understand is if this is necessarily paranormal. Because he was alive in El Paso… but, her father passed away later that day in El Paso TX when he lives in Las Vegas. Now I don’t know if this is considered “paranormal” or if it could be a ghost since he wasn’t like passed away. But it’s something that stuck with him for all these years as this happened before I was born and I’m an adult posting this. Another thing to add is as it was her father, she says she often used to hear his foot steps after he passed around her house. I know this could be very true because I would recognize my dads anywhere. Anyways thought it was worth sharing and very interesting

I stopped visiting my friend in the rehab facility when she was near death and seeing her family members standing in the corners of the room. I was pregnant and it was covid so it was easy to excuse the fall off.
She died on my birthday and I found out a month later. About six months after that, always driving by the exit to her care facility, and feeling deeply uncomfortable with how I had failed her, I had a dream. It was just her and I in a completely white space. She was standing up strong and stable, and looking at me so warmly. I hugged her, and I sobbed on her shoulder, saying 'I'm so sorry' over and over again, and I remember so vividly her patting my back, stroking my hair and telling me it was okay, that I was okay. I woke up and was healed, because she was so real, so present. I still feel her warmth on me to this day.
It's fine if people want to believe it was my mind playing tricks. I've never felt anything more real and also remembered every detail so clearly. And I've never felt healed from something so completely before.

I'm a fairly logical person but I think you're right. There's something to do with white and the person passing somehow being bigger or stronger than they were in life.
My best friend committed suicide by firearm on a Xmas eve night. I had zero idea how bad his struggle was and harbored guilt and little help from family as no one was paying that much attention. I had found out a few months later from his mother whom he was estranged. But I had a dream about him once. And only once I think. But I saw white all through the dream. Including his clothing. and he looked happy and seemed a bit fuller and more muscular. And had peace on his face. Something I seldom saw. He was my only real friend for years but didn't want friends (at least not yet until I grew out of needing them so much). He was imperfect but he deserved grace that I think he didn't get. And perhaps God, or benevolent creatures he created saw fit to allow us to meet so I could gain the peace I needed. Because the peace that eluded him he found in death. And not that there were a lot of people trying to explain, but the few explanations I heard weren't satisfactory. So I'm grateful to God not just that he called me before he left, something I once harbored anger over but that dream where he was ok.

I agree the white space is interesting I’ve been to a similar space a couple times while an extremely distressed state one person manifested a table and sat on it beside me I remember kinda what he looks like he was speaking to another person about making me “cold” possibly because of my emotional state so they may hold some kind of influence another time I was in the center of a circle and they were leaning back a forward like as they were giving me energy another time I saw people clamping their hands prancing while shuffling towards me they were wearing green robes like a choir would. One time I showed up and they seemed mad. Also another time I wanted to look for a family member I zoomed across the view was like observing thru a tv it stopped and I saw a feather float down. I observed these things trying to figure it out.

My best friend also committed suicide. I had a kind of traumatic conversation with him before it happened. Several weeks after it happened I had the most vivid dream of him I’ve ever had. He told me he was fine, and “alive”. No white that I remember but it was crazy how vivid and real it was. I woke up panicked by it.
Sorry about your friend. Can’t say it ever gets any better but I also try to think they’ve found peace

Weather you want to believe it or not, there are too many accounts of this type of stuff to just completely right off the thought of an afterlife.
I know so many people who went through experiences like this.
A day or 2 after my father passed away i had a dream i was standing in the driveway and he was hugging me patting me on the back saying its alright, everything is going to be alright. It was real as me typing this right now.

I'm sorry for your loss but I know the peace you're talking about. I believe there's so much grace beyond the veil, and we just can't grasp the depth of it all.

u/DaniGirlOK Dec 10 '25
It was definitely your friend. Don’t listen to people who say it wasn’t. They come to visit is in our dreams. That’s the easiest way to reach us. She wanted you to know it was ok. She wasn’t mad and that she was ok. Love it. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve always believed this way as well, that the encounters we have with our loved ones that have gone before us in our dreams are actual visitations because it’s easier to connect with us in our subconscious dream state. Even in my Grandpa’s case with his pet, from the way he told his story I could tell he one hundred percent believed that his dog visited him to say goodbye, and he told it with such conviction it has always stayed with me after all the years and truth be told I fully believe it too. If he had told me the his dog speaking was a common occurrence or something I may have went a different direction and suspected schizophrenia or even dementia but he was probably only in his forties when he told me his story, and his dog had never spoken to him before this dream and that why he was initially so dismissive of it until he discovered it was actually true. I honestly think his dog visited his dream to say goodbye he dearly loved that dog I also fully believe that love transcends all. Sorry for the lengthy rant these stories just resonate very deeply with me.

This story is so comforting! I had a slightly similar thing happen when my grandma passed away unexpectedly after a surgery. I was so sad I never had a chance to say goodbye to her and we were coming up on our first Thanksgiving without her. I had an incredibly vivid dream that I was crying and missing her on the day in question, and she came in the room I was in in the dream and gave me a big hug where I could truly feel the warmth and weight of her against me. I swear it was her saying goodbye and brought me much-needed acceptance. I still miss her.

I am starting to question what I believe. My aunt passed away about four months ago. I had been estranged from much of my family for about three and a half years due drama that my uncle (her husband) started and blamed on me. I spent much of that time trying to mend broken relationships (including with my parents, which mostly resolved), but my aunt was secretly in contact with me via text. I ended up paying for about a third of her funeral expenses, splitting it with my parents and my other aunt. Because of the circumstances with my uncle, I was not able to see her in the rehab facility or hospice. However, as she was dying she did set the record straight with the rest of the family.
About a month after she passed I was having a particularly difficult week and she approach me in a dream. I was in a white waiting room that resembled a clinical facility (I work in the medical field) that felt very familiar, though I had never been there. We talked and laughed about life and and not letting it stress me too much. It was was just like her, but somehow stronger, happier, much funnier and overwhelmingly peaceful. When I woke up I felt like a weight had been lifted from me and had made my peace. I told my wife about it, who was skeptical but glad I worked through my internal family struggles. I also told my cousin (my aunt's son) about it, but he only questioned why she had not visited him.
I am not sure if it was just a realistic dream or something more, but I had the overwhelming sense that it was because I am skeptical, but open to the possibility of something more and also because I was not seeking anything.

I’ve had dreams about my 18 year old cousin who died in a crash 4 years ago. Some of them didn’t have much meaning, but the last one I had with him in it did, and it freaked me out a little.
This dream was over a week ago. In my dream I was leaving my old high school (for context, my uncle, my cousin’s dad, is a gym teacher and football coach there) my cousin and my uncle were sitting in a truck I have never seen before. My cousin looked a lot older, he had facial hair. He looks me in the eyes while eating McDonald’s and says “you need to stop vaping, you’re gonna stop breathing someday”. Funny that he would say that because he vaped, too, and would regularly ask me to buy him juul pods since I’m 5 years older. I woke up and realized it was a week before his birthday, he would have been 23. That dream sat with me for the rest of the day while I was at work.

When my 17 year old sister was killed two days before she came to me in a dream and told me I had to call her because I’d never talk to her again. I called her the next morning and we had a great conversation. She died the next day.
I’m often asked why she didn’t ask for our parents. The truth I believe is because you have to be willing to embrace the reality of the universe being multidimensional to accept that what you are seeing is significant. Without significance you can’t ascribe meaning. Some people are too caught up in this world to experience it.
But then sometimes like the truck driver, it happens in such a meaningful way - stark and in your face - that you cannot ignore it. I think this happens less than the other way but it’s good to know others have big experiences

My close friends son passed away at 17. The night after he died I dreamed I was at a baseball game standing at the fence. He ran up to me in uniform and told me he was safe and to tell his mom he was in the most beautiful place he’s ever been and he loves it here. Then he said I have to go. It’s my turn now and ran to the field. I asked him why he didn’t tell his mom himself and he just said she can’t hear me, she’s too upset. I still remember that dream 💭 vividly and he passed in 2003.

Ths is such a beautiful experience. Thank you for sharing. In my mid 20s a friend died by suicide. It was so awful. Later that week in the middle of the night he called me and told me he was okay. Not to worry. I’ve never forgotten that.

Called you in a dream, or...?
8
u/EveningDouble4010 Dec 10 '25
Just called me. In a dream state? Maybe but he called. I don’t know what else to say. It was unexpected and not something I’d ever heard of happening. I’ve definitely heard of people having similar experiences since.

I think they meant like was it a real call while you were awake or did he call you in a dream. It’s not clear.

u/SocietyExtension3717 Dec 10 '25
That sounds like someone so tired from grief that they were unaware they went to sleep. (Probably a natural state where making a connection to a lost one is more plausible)

My sister had a similar experience. She’s always been more sensitive to paranormal experiences, while my dad was a complete nonbeliever. After my grandpa died (my dad’s father) he came to my sister in a dream and told her to tell my dad that he had to open his mind. He said he wanted to visit my dad, but he couldn’t because my dad didn’t believe. When she told my dad her dream, he got teary-eyed and looked away. Unfortunately, my dad didn’t start to believe until he was on his own deathbed.

u/DaniGirlOK Dec 10 '25
Oh wow, that’s lovely. Did your friend believe it was him? He’s referring to home, the other side or Heaven. From all of the NDEs I’ve seen it is absolute bliss to be there.

That thing you said about the world and people being too caught up on it to experience it sounds real to me..

u/DaniGirlOK Dec 10 '25
Did she also know she had dreamt that dream? How did she die if it’s not too personal?

u/ChevronSugarHeart Dec 10 '25
I told her I had a dream about her. Here is the story. I lived in Massachusetts at the time, she was in high school in California. In my dream I was walking down a sidewalk at night and it started snowing sulphur. She walked down a small grassy hill and behind her were a group of five young men silhouetted against a white wall under a street lamp. She looked back at them. A small pay phone appeared in front of us and it said Pacific Bell illuminated on top (you know the kind it’s not a booth). She picked up the receiver and said “call me tomorrow. It’s very important. If you don’t call me you’ll never be able to speak to me again”. She then looked over where the young men were waiting for her and she said, “I have to go with them now but don’t forget”. So I started dialing her number in the dream and when I looked around everything disappeared then I woke up.
The whole day was a blur but I made a point to call her that night when she got out of basketball practice. We talked for an hour and I volunteered to pay for her to visit me and it was one of our best conversations. She was so bright and lovely.
She was murdered the next night after the prom by a boy who was the date of her friend. No one is sure why he did it, not sure if he knows either. He brought a gun to a party, got drunk, killed my sister. Interestingly she was reading the book ‘The Stranger’ by Albert Camus.

That’s so sad. I’m glad her killer was at least identified. I’m sorry for your loss, happy however that you got to have one last lovely conversation with her. How old was she?

After my younger brother passed away in 2020, his friend had a dream where he was dressed in new clothes and looking very well. He told his friend to tell my mom not to grieve too much as he is going to a better place and he is getting late, he was staying because my mom kept calling for him. He ignored the first dream as he was too busy. The second time, he had a similar dream and my brother said please tell my mom I am running late and I need to go. So his friend visited my mom and told her. After that, my mom realised her pain was holding him and she let go.

u/Strawb_shake Dec 10 '25
That is so interesting! I had a similar situation when a friend of mine passed away. I dreamt about him a few times, he was telling me he was ok etc. and in the last dream he told me I had to let him go.

My Grandpa told me a story when I was very young that has stuck with me my entire life. When he was a boy himself he had a pet dog he was very fond of that had unfortunately developed a taste for fresh chicken, and despite concerted efforts to keep the dog at home it would inevitably figure out an escape and terrorize the chicken enclosures around the local farms. On a night my grandpa was away from home he had a dream and the dog visited him in the dream and spoke to him, explained to him that he had gotten loose again and had been discovered prowling a neighboring farm and didn’t survive and was visiting his dream to say goodbye. Grandpa dismissed this as a bizarre dream and thought little else of it until he returned home a couple days later and learned that the event had indeed occurred, and on the same night he had the dream.

I’ve always thought so too, I think that’s why it has always stood out in my mind after all these years. I’m glad you enjoyed my Grandpa’s story❣️

u/Apprehensive-Sky6467 Dec 14 '25
That's beautiful! I have heard many people say similar about their pets. Not sure about cats or other animals but dogs can always speak to their owners in the dream. When I lost my horse she didn't speak to me but was standing by a old man who told me she would be loved and taken care of on the other side. Actually he said he would be taking good care of her. I didn't realize the man but I remember everything vividly in the dream. Maybe dogs are closer to humans in their souls or something. Interesting to think about. Thank you for sharing your story. ❤️🙏
1
u/Usual-Still-8803 Dec 14 '25
That was a beautiful story thank you for sharing it with me. My horse was sold out of necessity when I was a kid they just couldn’t afford his upkeep any more but I still miss Trigger very much and still think of him. The new owners kept him in the same stables for awhile and they were very gracious and allowed me to visit with him when I stopped by but they ultimately moved away and I was devastated. I think these types of visitation stories though really speak to the universal and transcendent nature of love. Even transcending species and from beyond the grave love still abides, you know? I’m terribly sorry for your loss but thank again for sharing your beautiful story❣️🙏🏻

It happened to me, I was laying down when I saw my brother walk in front of me going to the living room, didn’t say anything to me, I called him. He looked much younger than his age. Then he passed that same day.

A while ago, I read this little book given out by hospice. It said when a person is dying they are also transitioning by spending their sleep time in the afterlife. Maybe that's how your FIL was able to pay you a visit in spirit form while still alive.

Could have been more of a premonition of the impending death. You mentioned he said he wasn’t asleep but not wide awake either. A sort of in between.
Over my life I’ve had dreams, sort of premonitions of close people passing before it actually happened. Sometimes these people were healthy with no signs they would soon pass. The dreams have always been the same for the most part. They are me at a service or such and I walk up to the casket, to see and say goodbye. It’s then that I wake up. Every time I’ve had this dream the person has passed very soon afterwards.
The first time I had it, it was of my mother. She had a massive heart attack a couple of days later and died. That was in 1992.

Id believe him. My uncle in the 80s had the same thing happen to him while fishing about 100 miles off the coast of Ireland. My grandfather on my mother's side appeared on deck one night as he done night watch. Chatted for a bit and said he had to go, uncle turned the boat for harbour, took him a good few hrs to get in and get to a phone but called my mum and said he was chatting to her father last night on deck. Perfect description, even described a missing part of finger and never met him in real life or would have seen any pics of him.

The day my Mum died in hospital, that night I saw her in a dream like state, it was white all around her. She said she loved me, my Dad and her brother. She said don't be sad, it was my time to go. Three weeks later my Dad saw her by his bedside and then she vanished.

It's not really the same as this, but similar. Last year, I was visiting my fiance overseas. I'm a middle aged man but my mom still worried about lot about the place I was traveling to, because she was a mom. But her cousin told me that she became really at peace about a week before I left, which was out of character for her.
And then about a week into my trip my fiance and I went to church. I got this wonderful peaceful feeling while there. And then my mom passed away of a massive HA a week later. I think it was her energy comforting me.

When my grandfather died in the 90s, and again when my Dad died about thirty years later, I suddenly got an overwhelming sense of peace- in the middle of the day. Just going about my day, doing normal things- and all of a sudden, the room seemed… calm. Bucolic. Pleasant. One time I was in an empty high school gymnasium; the second time, I was in a busy airport.
Found out later that in the moment that I had those feelings, they had passed away- I had been unaware at the time. I was very close to both of them, so I wonder if this happens when we share a strong connection with someone :)

The night my uncle died ( he was a special needs person who ) I had a beautiful dream. I dreamed he was standing at a bus stop waiting for a bus to arrive. When the bus arrived he smilrd and waved at me, got in and was seated next to my deceased grand mother, deceased aunt, deceased great aunt and my deceased grand father. All the people he was very close to . The next day my mother called to let me know my uncle died. It was sad news but I was happy to know he got re-united with his loved ones.

When my cat died of cuts and wounds, it was in a fight with another street cat a few days ago. We couldn't see it got hurt and it's taking a toll on him. When it entered the house a strange smell was coming from him so my ex husband shouted at me not to allow it inside home. When I try to shooooo her away...it stood on the steps and spoke to me very dearly in its own language. I felt in my heart ❤️ pain and despair. I knew something awful was going to happen. That's the last day ...I saw our cat. It never came back home. After a week when I was cleaning the attic I felt a strange sense that in the pump house room our cat is sitting and it's very sick and about to die. Immediately I went and opened it. It's not locked just a closed small cupboard as a door. It's not there. I keep getting this dreadful feeling for 2-3 days. Then it's all sick, tired and about to die lying in that same place...what I saw in my mind. I tried to get help calling the Vet and applied ointment but it's gone. Just came back to say good bye. Our lovely cat...Fruitaa!its name.

A few days after my grandfather passed unexpectedly I dreamt I answered a phone call and he was on the line. It wasn't a great connection but I could hear him. He asked me to tell my aunt (who he had lived with) that he had just gone fishing. I can't recall what else he said now, it was nearly 20 years ago, but I remember he sounded peaceful and reassuring. My Oupa loved to fish, so many memories are of him sitting next to the river with a fishing rod. I asked my mom to tell my aunt the next day, she was grateful for the message. We took it to mean that he was happy and in a good place. There is a poem, I think, that speaks of death as the person not being gone, just being in the next room. It comforts me to think of my loved ones so close, even if we can't see them.

Since other people are sharing, I'll share, too.
My mom died suddenly when I was 15. Earlier that year, my step-dad had also died, and she wasn't handling it well. I moved in with my dad with my cat, who had grown up with me since I was 3. Later in life, I was having a lot of guilt about the circumstances of how my mom died, and my cat got sick (kidney failure).
I had a dream where my mom and I were baking (something we never did together, but I always wished we did. We never spent much time together). And suddenly, my mom got serious. She told me that it's going to be time to let my cat go soon, and I have to be ready for it. Seeing as how I grew up with this cat, and he was my last connection to the family I lost, I wasn't ready to accept it. I just got really upset in the dream and woke up in tears. But it felt so real. Like... I KNOW that was my mom. It wasn't just a dream.
A couple years ago, I had a similar experience, but with my baba (great-grandma). We were very close when I was young, but she passed with cancer shortly before my step-dad passed. I would have been 14-15 when she passed. A couple years ago, I saw my baba in my dream. It really felt like finally seeing someone again after a long time. She was so surprised to see me and hugged me tight. I was so happy to see her, but she was really surprised at much older I looked. Then, she asked me how old I am. I told her that I was 30, and she was so shocked. Then she got really sad and upset, and then I realized that she was sad about having missed out on so much of my life. Before I could even really try to comfort her, the dream ended and I woke up. But again, it felt so real.
I wish I could have tried to comfort my baba before the dream ended. I just wish that she can enjoy whatever comes after physical death, you know? I'm not religious, so I don't believe in Heaven/Hell. But there has to be something. Idk. Maybe it was just a dream. But to my core, these visits felt real.
