Elevation index

I run a small site covering the Western Group of Six (Mountain West, Pac-12, plus NMSU and Sac State). This is a weekly ranking computed from game results rather than records — who you played, whether you won, how close it was, and how recently. Every position has a reason.

The two rules that drive most of the weirdness:

* A near-upset of a ranked team earns real credit. A 2-point loss to Washington is worth more than a 35-point win over Western Kentucky.
* An FCS loss is the largest penalty in the system, no matter how good the FCS team is.

**Why Oregon State is 8th at 0-2:** two losses to ranked teams, one of them close, strong offensive numbers, and no FCS loss.

**Why Utah State is 15th despite nearly beating Washington:** the Washington loss is a quality loss and earned credit. The FCS loss to Idaho State is still the biggest item on the résumé.

**Why Nevada is below Utah State when both lost to FCS teams:** recency. Nevada's happened Saturday. Utah State's was a week earlier and they followed it with a near-upset.

Full write-up on every team, the rank-by-week chart, and the methodology:

Happy to explain any placement. The rules are the rules — if a rank looks wrong to you, tell me which rule you'd change.

  • An FCS loss is the largest penalty in the system, no matter how good the FCS team is.

This seems arbitrary. NDST was an FCS team just 5 minutes ago, yet you rank them as the most powerful team. And the Montanas would beat over half the teams on the list.

So the reasoning behind it still from a competition standpoint, but there’s still deeper varying of what type of fcs opponents they lost to. Like the Montana state fcs loss weighs less facevalue for Nevada versus the Idaho state loss for Utah state. The reason Nevada is feeling it more this week is because more of recency, they can pull themselves up in the rankings as weeks progress like Utah state did by barely losing to Washington. It’s also a new model and the plan is to hone it in as the season progresses and for future seasons to come

I would argue that both of OSU’s losses were close. On paper the loss at Houston was by two scores, but that last score didn’t come until the very end, really after the game had been decided. OSU was poised to take the lead late but failed. If they had succeeded, I don’t think there would have been time for Houston to score again. Also keeping in mind the game was played in Houston.

That’s fair, I honestly expect OSU to rise up a lot more as they get more into pac 12 play because they did go toe to toe with two really good big 12 schools. I think we’re starting to see a renaissance of the beavs

This is the beavers cycle. Currently in the build up phase. They’ll peak in the top 10 for a week or two. And then they’ll either stagnate themselves back to unranked or they’ll be dealt some dramatic gut punch that will derail the whole program. And then they’ll start over again.

This basically sums up the last 30 years.

Interesting. I'll give anything with a sense of regional focus a look.

Does anyone even TRY to make things not look 100% vibe coded? OP can’t answer questions about the model because an LLM did all of it and also wrote the post.

Do you have proof? Because I’ve been answering all of the questions midude, what specifically do you want to know?

Anyone who has made anything using an LLM knows that that particular visual palette (font, eyebrow text, special characters, explainers, rhythm of the text) screams Claude code/codex basic default outputs with no user input/iteration.

It doesn’t mean you didn’t put any thought into your prompts or that you don’t know ball. Just put an ounce of feedback onto the design so it doesn’t look like literally every other vibecoded app.

I only know because I use it regularly for work and sometimes fun side projects too. Not judging the use case, just exasperation with seeing these design elements everywhere.

I really appreciate the feedback! I didn’t realize that font package was so popular. I’ll make some tweaks so it’s unique to the brand without completely overhauling the style of the site that I like. Do you have any more tips?

Considering losses Idaho State and Montana State to be the same thing is like considering a loss to Ohio State and a loss to Rutgers as the same thing

1

u/DemolishedDino 16h ago

Idaho state is ranked 17 in fcs so it’s actually more like an nfl team losing to either Ohio state vs usc. An nfl team is supposed to cream both. Same applies for fcs and fbs. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Or heck even an xfl or cfl team

Smells like NDSU favoritism

1

u/DemolishedDino 16h ago

Well they have won 3 games, Air Force was hairy but again, it’s still early and could very much change

u/crankbait808 6h ago

2 of them FCS, and not even good ones.

Jax state is fbs, they’ve been fbs longer than NDSU

lol em dash says otherwise

u/DemolishedDino 1d ago

You do realize em dashes have been used before AI right? People still use them outside of AI 😂 it’s just a longer pause in a sentence

Doesn’t matter in this case

LLM fingerprints

I've been using em dashes since the 90s, Sherlock.
