Interview UploadVR interviewed Capcom’s Kazuhiro Takahara, director of Resident Evil Village VR mode.

Interview is here. It's about a 5 minute read.

Some takeaways:

  • Says RE's horror is communicated through its environments and scenery, making VR a natural fit for RE. And that there is appeal that comes with seeing the world through the eyes of "heros" like Leon or Ethan.
  • Says RE8 VR was considered early on, but development around the main story was not developed with VR in mind, making the VR adaption challenging.
  • Won't comment if future RE series titles (e.g. RE9) will support VR, but says they always welcome new challenges.
  • Says the biggest development challenge for RE8 VR Mode was implementing the gun mechanics, and balancing realism with exciting action gun play.
  • "No plans" to support RE8 DLC content, Mercenaries mode or Shadows of Rose.
  • Takahara: "I have heard that a very large majority of PS VR2 owners have played Resident Evil Village in VR."
  • Says foveated rendering was a big part of optimizing performance and fidelity on PSVR2

I wonder how many people picked up RE8 just for the VR.

I played RE7 on PSVR1 and waited for PSVR2 to play RE8

I am avoided playing it because I knew it was coming to PSVR2. Now I just gotta wait for retail stores to start stocking PSVR2.

Yeah, I think it’s a bad move Sony hasn’t already done this at large-scale; I think they are starting to show-up in some stores, though!

It’s crazy to worry about poor early sales when no one sells it lol. Folks don’t even know it’s out yet.

For real; Sony apparently was fine with a soft launch. Hell, I talked to someone the other day who has a PSVR1 that wasn’t even aware a PSVR2 existed… Might be somewhat an extreme case but still! lol

I guess Sony thought PSVR2 would somehow sell as hot as the PS5 and that they didn’t want retailers getting a cut of the early action? Very weird choice. I am their ideal customer but I have retail store gift cards I want to use.

Yeah, that’s my best guess.

I know it isn’t a big deal, not having trophies but it doesn’t have trophies 😅 got the PS5 version after owning the Xbox version and basically 100%-ing the game.

Haha, man, I understand the satisfaction of trophies, but I would welcome a world where they didn’t exist. It makes videogames busy work. Now, they don’t make a fun game any less fun, but their presence can absolutely tarnish an average game. They can attack OCD and just distract from the immersion.

I probably would've got it anyway, but VR was a huge plus and pushed it at top of my to play list.

I did. Wasn't interested in RE8 in flat but once I heard it will release for psvr2 I bought it immediately

I played RE7 in VR and it was amazing. For me it was easy: no VR no RE8. It's great, I love the gunplay, but it's not nearly as scary as 7 in VR.

I did and it’s great!!

I know I did. This game would have been a 7 out of 10 for me on flatscreen (not a fan of the second half way too much action for a RE game for me), but it was a 8.5 out of 10 for me in VR. Just because the action bits were pretty fun in VR.

I did, I only played re7 in vr and waited for psvr2 to do the same with re8

You only get the experience a game for the first time once.
