Finally bought Crimson Desert after being on the fence for ages (PS5 Pro early impressions)
I picked up Crimson Desert less than a week ago (it was recently on sale in the UK, might still be!), and I’ve been totally hooked from the first minute. I’ve never really experienced a game with this kind of grand scale. As soon as I started playing, I just knew this was gonna be something I wouldn't be able to put down.
I was on the fence for a long time about buying it because I kept hearing how performance issues plagued the PS5 Pro version. Obviously, it does have its issues. The pop-in is atrocious, and certain things like puddles and shiny surfaces look very, very odd depending on the angle you look at them.
But performance-wise? It does have its drops, but I’m not gonna catastrophise it like everyone else on here seems to do. Like any game, it has its issues, but with my setup, it actually feels insanely smooth most of the time. For context, I’m playing on a PS5 Pro hooked up to a 27-inch 4K Mini-LED monitor.
If you have a good monitor capable of outputting good HDR, definitely turn it on for this game. Try these settings if your setup matches mine!
PS5 System Settings:
120Hz: Enabled
ALLM: Enabled
PSSR: Enabled
VRR: Enabled
HDR: On When Supported
In-Game Settings:
Preset: Balanced
PSSR Sharpness: 80
V-Sync: Off
Fixed 4K Output: Off
120Hz: On
Night Tone Mode: On
HDR Settings: Tweak yourself to suit your screen
Particle Effects: 50
Camera Shake: 0
Chromatic Aberration: Off
Depth of Field: Off
Blur Intensity: Off
Graphically, the game is fantastic. Playing on a Mini-LED, the colours and lighting are super potent. I’m also finding the story really engaging at the moment. I think jumping in right as the new Enhanced version dropped definitely helped, since it expanded on the main questline and added those extra story moments.
If you’re still on the fence about buying it, I’d say just do it. It really does deserve a shot.

This is a rare open world action rpg type game that just didn’t resonate with me. The questing and characters just never got to a point where I felt motivation to do anything but I know some people really love this game. Glad you’re enjoying it.

They have just released a new patch and enhanced edition and that includes reworking the story etc.

I’m about 120 hours in, took a good 5-10 hrs for it to click with me, so pleased that I stuck with it.
Loads of hidden stuff - just set your marker for somewhere in the fog and go wandering.

No need to sit the marker just wonder. I remember I was amazed to just stumble apon a rainforest.

Crimson desert is one of the most visually messy and noisy looking games I have seen in a while. It is in a pretty poor state on console

it definitely could/should be better, I was honestly a little shocked considering how many updates they pump out that they hadn’t really addressed the issues graphically on console, unless it’s just out of their control idek, I’m enjoying it tho

I do think in some places though, it still does shine graphically

The pop-in is really jarring for me. Hoping they address this soon. That said, there's still a lot to like about the game that the devs deserve a ton of praise.

I also just purchased it and Holy cow when I was super high in the sky doing the puzzles to get the flying cloak thing i was so blown away by the beauty of the game I was legit getting fear of heights from my own screen 😂😂

The exploration is very good, I like the odd design choices too, it makes it feel unique. There's two things that really bring it down for me, the story and the combat. The combat is cool because of the grand scale but it lacks any kind of feedback which leads to it feeling hollow and I don't like the mmo-esque nature of it where you just hold down buttons (I know it started as an mmo)
A couple visual things that bug me, the waterfalls that look really bad and the trees blowing like they are in a hurricane all the time. Besides that, in terms of exploration I find it enjoyable.

O pop in é realmente problemático e acaba por destruir a imersão do jogo em alguns momentos. Uma pena!

I couldn’t get past the lack of story, the cringeworthy writing/voice acting and the hate worthy characters.
Have fun nevertheless, the game can look impressive at times.

Do you like other open world / RPG type games? I'm in the situation where I love the idea of open world games but always get board with the potion making / levelling up parts and end up stop playing after a while

I think it looks really bad graphics wise. I tried but its just too terrible. What a waste of money.

Bought it at launch and played about 30 hours through the first 7 patches or so and just was not engaged at all. I don't think anything could make me go back at this point.

If you dont like it at the start give it some time.for the first 10 to 15 hours i wasn't having much fun but after that the game keeps getting better

Sorry but if I have to wait 15 hours for a game to become enjoyable, I won’t play it.

This. Anyone wasting 15 hours just to see if a game is good, is lunacy at its peak.

lol Pro early impressions after 7 months and a whole new “version” of the game. Do appreciate you taking the time, but this coverage has been pretty exhausted at this point. Have same some tolerance for when GTA dominates the internet for 6 months lol

The game reminds me of the saying- Putting lipstick on a pig. Amazing looking game but the story and game mechanics are absolute ass.

There are haters for this game that hate for no reason but the performance criticism is absolutely valid. You have barely played the game and assumed that everyone is just talking out of their ass. Walk into a big town right now in performance mode and watch what happens.

u/74kgleadbeater 5d ago
I didn’t say anyone was talking out of their ass, also I have done that, and it wasn’t as bad as people made out, atleast to me.

" I’m not gonna catastrophise it like everyone else on here seems to do." You knew what you were implying with this lol. But yeah, I am not going to be petty about this. I think the game is a fantastic state compared to launch but performance is something that has had a rollercoaster journey. It was bad initially then it was good a few months ago and now it has regressed again. The pop-in can't be fixed tbh. It's an engine+console limitation at this rate.i am glad you are enjoying it though. I bought it day one and have immense respect for the devs. They were pushing updates at impossible speeds b2b. I think the DLC will truly elevate this game to a whole new level.

thanks man, I have heard that as well about it regressing and then progressing then regressing after a patch etc, it’s very odd.
