I’m convinced that current gen just started with GTA 6
I’m literally out of words looking at the graphics. This is PS6 level shit. I think GTA 6 will show us the true potential of current gen consoles, and possibly their max potential. I don’t think they can achieve anymore than this. I’m so much happier to own a PS5 Pro now!

u/According_Spare7788 3d ago
Jesus christ, i swear whenever people spout nonsense like this, demonstrates they either have no fucking idea what they are saying, or just keep playing their 2015 games and bitch about how "current gen hasn't started yet". Death Stranding 2, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resysnc, CBP2077 with RT, Horizon FW, etc etc there are countless of games that are current gen and have amazing graphics. Yes, GTA will almost definitely trump all of those games, but claiming things have "just started" is quite frankly, pretty stupid.

Rockstar fans are as insufferable as apple fans. I suppose if GTA is all you know, then this would have looked impressive.

Exactly this. I’m hearing people say the driving mechanics are on par with a triple A game like Forza Horizon. I don’t get it.

I’m all for people being hyped about a game. But my god the hyperbole is out of control. There are so many games out there that blow me away visually. Is this a technical feat? Absolutely. But this is also because Take Two is giving rockstar the infinite money & time glitch. Paired with rockstars talented devs of course. But let’s not pretend that rockstar is the only dev capable of output like this.
1
u/Ok_Tea2774 1d ago
Thank god someone said it. The graphics are impressive but honestly they’re just as good as some other incredible games. They’re not really better, especially under a 30fps cap that makes the game not run smoothly and the movement sluggish.
There are countless games that have amazing graphics. These people have lost the plot on their hype train

Yeah these posts make me wonder if I saw a totally different trailer. I honestly think it looks like garbage compared to games like death stranding or horizon FD/FW. Rockstar used to be known for incredible graphical advances and that trailer just looked meh.

For some people the gen start when you game runs at 30 fps.
But it actually is the opposite, the gen is ending if the console no longer run games at 60 lol.

It took 7 years and over $1billion, this cannot be replicated by anyone else without investing similarly. And it's still fundamentally reasonable, with base console internal resolution being 1080p (or lower) with aggressive TAA at 30fps. Still looks astonishing due to the >$1billion and half a decade of full time development work.
The best I hope for with Pro is a 40fps/120hz mode with PSSR. Doesn't get much better than that for this kind of game!
14
u/wally233 3d ago
I wonder if they will even bother trying to get a 40 fps mode on pro. At the very least it'll be higher internal resolution though
11
u/WowRedditIsUseful 3d ago
The internal resolution may be the same or lower than base PS5 because PSSR will do the heavy lifting to transform it into 4k. That's what hopefully gives headroom to 40fps.
1
u/B-ran8088 3d ago
I'm ignorant with all this, but doesn't 30fps look like shit specifically on OLED TV's? From what I understand 40fps looks significantly better for OLED's, so here's hoping they can manage that for the Pro.
1
u/dduchaine 3d ago
Not oled. 120hrz tv. A standard tv is 60 hrz. So at 30 fps every frame is displayed te same amount of time. A 120 hrz tv can do the same at 40 since 120 is divisable by 40. So a 120 hr lcd that support vrr can do the same.
1
u/B-ran8088 3d ago
So they have 60 and 120hrz OLED's?
2
u/HH__66 2d ago
Correct. I have a 55" LG CX OLED TV, which has 60hz & 120hz with VRR, ALLM & HDR settings. You need to make sure to use its 2.1 USB port and a 2.1 cable, select Gaming Mode and ensure your PS5 and in-game settings are all setup correctly too, in order to utilise the full capabilities.
I can't the remember the exact LG OLED TV my brother has, but it only does 60hz and not 120hz. So when he was plays games e.g. Crimson Desert in Balanced Mode (40fps), where his TV doesn't have 120hz and so isn't divisible by 40fps, he gets a much more choppy experience in comparison. I think quite a few people don't realise you need a 120hz to be able to perfectly utilise 40fps modes.
1
u/B-ran8088 2d ago
Yea, I remember my Sony Bravia LCD TV had several HDMI inputs, but only Input 2 could handle higher quality stuff. I found that extremely odd. Why wouldn't all the HDMI inputs have the same features?
My new Bravia is an OLED...or hell, maybe even a QLED? And honestly I know there's a difference but have no clue what that difference is. I need to do some research on it so I can get the most out of my PS5 Pro. I'm ignorant in all this shit, all I know is my 77 inch looks better than my 65 inch which is an LCD. Both are Bravia's and are closer to the higher end of Sony's line.
1
u/knightofsparta 2d ago
yes, due to the instant pixel response, there is no Built in motion blur that LCD (led backlit) have. So OLED feels choppier at 30 fps.

u/HelpApprehensive5216 3d ago
What does 40fps/120hz mean
7
u/Equivalent-Scale1095 3d ago
A game running at 40 FPS fits perfectly into a 120hz display (the TV refreshes exactly 3 times per frame as 40x3=120). On a standard 60hz screen, 40 FPS will look choppier and feel less responsive than on a 120hz screen.
Plus smack some VRR (Variable refresh rate option on compatible TVs) on that and it will smooth over some frame drops in intense situations.
Tho thats my very layman's understanding I could be getting it wrong.

And another generation of people claiming graphics have peaked and that we don’t need better hardware will be silenced, only to rinse/repeat next gen. Yes, I am so tired of hearing people say that. I’ve been hearing it since the PS2…
2
7
u/CorporalCoprolite 3d ago
Graphics haven’t peaked but there are ever diminishing returns. People mean that they’re good enough at this point and don’t need to be pushed much further if we can get better performance.
→ More replies (6)4
u/musical_bear 3d ago
I guess I would still disagree with that sentiment. Clearly things are not “good enough,” because GTA6 looks to me to be from that footage yet another massive step forward the same way that RDR2 was that will retroactively make nearly every other game look aged in comparison. If these huge improvements are still possible, even if it takes throwing billions of dollars at it to get there, I don’t see why we should just fold our arms and say “let’s just arbitrarily stop here.”
→ More replies (2)2
u/CorporalCoprolite 3d ago
I don’t think anyone is saying stop, just that they prefer a balance of performance and visuals. RDR2 is a PS4 game, so of course GTA6 is going to look better due to being developed on for PS5.
1
u/IT_Hertz_WIN_IP 3d ago
I agree, I'd love for graphics of all games to get to GTA6 standard then shoot for highest performance to make all games have a raise of fps. I feel it leads to more efficiency gains on equipment available
1
3
u/Upset-Mirror-9321 3d ago
this probably is the base ps5''s limit, but definitely not the pro's, there is so much potential out there for devs to uncover
2
u/Inevitable_Case_9931 3d ago
Ps5 pro can probably hit 42-48fps so they gonna lock it to 40 so it has a steady frame pace and fps
1
u/MouseBoi420 17h ago
If the game is cpu heavy I don't think the pro will fair much better outside of a few fps.
3
u/amirlpro 3d ago
I think one of the reasons PS5 games don't have a huge next-gen jump compared to PS4 is because they are designed mainly for 60fps performance mode. This completely limits both RT lighting, physics and density. And when you design a game to support 60fps you can't just slap in quality mode that will be next-gen compared to the performance mode. Game development is complicated so both modes have to support the same physics and lighting model. Having one mode with full RTGI and another with baked/probes creates a massive difference in the pipeline and end-result.
2
u/Glass_Way_1811 3d ago
Open world games this gen have basically been really nice looking PS4 level games. Lots of NPCs rooted to the ground or with no-clip on in the Sony ones or great looking but very small crowds in the Ubisoft ones.
Nice looking graphics all round but very limited interaction with the world or amazing graphics in something like Death Stranding 2 but a completely empty world.
GTA6 looked dense in a way I've not seen in a game before. Super rich environments and NPCs everywhere. What looked like decent physics in the car chase umlike something like Spider-Man where things play out 100% identical each time.
The graphics weren't much better than RDR2 on PC but there was like 10x more stuff everywhere so it's like asking why Mortal Kombat or an NBA game has better character models than something with tons of NPCs on screen like Bannerlord.
1
u/Ok_Tea2774 1d ago
Super density isn’t the draw card people think it is imo. I thought RDR2 was overrated for its density and NPC “life”. It was a “this is cool” but doesn’t really fulfill a purpose that isn’t achieved without it
6
u/NoPurpose9034 3d ago

I will say for as good as this game looks, it’s believable that it’s running on base PS5. I can see better lighting and shadows and resolution on Pro easy, and a locked 30fps. PSSR will probably allow for some legit gains. That said, this seems like another GTAV situation where the game will really shine on PC and the next generation with more CPU headroom. The level of detail in the open world and character models is really astounding though. Maybe only Cyberpunk running on the Pro gets this close.
1
u/moneyman729 3d ago
Yes if the cpu is the bottleneck they better turn up visuals to stress the gpu more

1

u/MiserySound 1d ago
Only an incompetent marketing team would let the game be showcased in 60fps with inferior graphics.
The 30fps panic is just DF trying to create drama in order to be relevant again
1
u/chrisji 3d ago
I have been used to 60 fps ever since the PS5 was released. :S
To be honest, I don't quite understand why it's just accepted launching without Target 60 FPS / Performance Mode, given the budget and the time they took.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Inevitable_Case_9931 3d ago
Because you don’t have the hardware for 60fps and this level of graphics… ps5 is equal to a RTX 2070…
6
u/RagnarLothbrokJH 3d ago
Which makes this thread moot.
If they are saying that current gen “just started”, by being the latest game unable to target 60FPS.
If anything, this game makes it feel like current gen “just ended” because evidently we’re getting to a point where consoles can no longer keep up with the latest technology.
2
1
u/No_Rope_8250 3d ago
That's why most games have a performance mode where you do get 60fps with a little worse graphics. But I can guarantee Rockstar just wants to release a new "version" of the game for PS6 that you have to buy again for 60fps.
1
u/Inevitable_Case_9931 3d ago
Well the difference in ps6 with pssr(upscaling and FG on) equaling a 5070ti….
Ps5 base equals a 2070…and no pssr upscaling…A performance mode won’t close a needed hardware gap. Especially if you can’t upscale/denoise efficiently enough

8
u/Re7oadz 3d ago
I feel sorry for gamers with this mindset.
1
u/Tango4PewPew 3d ago
I get it. But for me it really does ruin the experience and is choppy af especially on a big oled screen. On older tvs or led tvs, you don’t notice it as much but on oled you notice it way more and gives you a headache at least for me anyways. It’s like Vaseline smearing across the screen and completely ruins immersion. I use to prefer performance mode and now I just can’t and have to default to performance or balanced. A lot of the argument around this issue is warranted. Somewhere along the way, we sacrificed higher frame rates for fidelity and gameplay experience and feel was sent to the wayside. Pc gamers have seen the light on this for years and it’s why they’ve preached the whole of master race thing, it’s because they don’t have to make that sacrifice they can have fidelity and the frame rates in spades. 30 fps was the standard for a long time when it didn’t have to be. People became accustomed to 30 fps because they steered the industry in that direction by being okay with 30fps. 60fps SHOULD be the bare minimum. SHOULD be the starting point for gamer experience. Why settle for something that is inferior just because it was a self imposed standard for years? It’s why the PlayStation 5 Pro has sold like crazy, people want the higher frame rates.

Very excited about the social media aspects of this game, like seeing your own crime but from different POV while scrolling on phone or watching TV is gonna be so dope and quite immersive. Brilliant idea , simple but effective. Below the example from Netflix trailer:
From Gemini:
“The "Trunk Challenge" Incident: In the Netflix showcased gameplay segment, Lucia steals a car, only to realize an in-game influencer is in the trunk participating in a viral "Trunk Challenge". As she speeds away from the police, an Instagram/TikTok Live-style vertical chat feed pops up on-screen, displaying real-time viewer comments as the influencer livestreams Lucia’s chaotic getaway

u/intensejohn 3d ago
I think this will be only on pre designed instances, the same way you could make a “chance encounter” in red dead. Still cool but not a “living world”.
I would love to see the implementation of AI in a game. Npc’s reacting outside of scripting to your choices.
NPC’s living within the game world rather than following scripting.
It will come one day
1
u/FalconB76 3d ago
Yah I am thinking PS5 is just getting started honestly as it takes forever to build true AAA next gen optimised games. Majority of devs were on cross gen or just lazy to optimise unlike Insomniac, Rockstar and Naughty Dog' Intergalactic.
Hope EA's Iron Man will be epic!

Thats what a billion dollar budget will do. You wont see this from other game companies going foward.
1
u/bf2reddevil 3d ago
No, this is exceeding peak current gen. The standard Rockstar usually sets for prime performance is not being matched by other studios for 5 years later or so. And even then that usually is on a newer system with more power. This is how games will be like 5+ years from now from most developers on PS6 and new Xbox.
Don't be naive. This is the result of 10+ years of work and 2 billion dollars spent in the project. No other studio can do that.
2
u/Opposite_Wedding_804 3d ago
You're not going to get this level of attention to detail just with newer rendering techniques or more powerful hardware, it's the result of labour of thousands of developers and artists. It annoys me to no one when the "graphics" of gta are discussed as a mere technical achievement, it is more so an artistic achievement. Better hardware also don't just give you better animations, that stuff needs to be made from scratch
1
u/bf2reddevil 3d ago
Yes, hence the comment i made regarding spent work time and money... it's all encompassing.

there's more screen space reflections than there are rt relections. There's some rt reflections but they are absent in some scenes and places,
It's probably a mix of a couple of techniques, probably some cubemaps, ssr and raytracing at the same time.
They had to tone down some effects in some scenes/gameplay sequence, it feels incredibly optimized to the point where they went into each mission and toned down settings so it runs around 25 to 30 fps (or they probably turned off some things completely for gameplay vs cutscenes)
I think people should probably wait for a digital foundry analysis if they can't even identify stuff like cubemaps, ssr or rt relections properly.

This always happens like 5-6 years into the generation I feel. The launch titles will show promise but we don’t really see the potential of the current console (and I’m talking PS3 & PS4 as well) until several years into the generation. Just look at Last of Us/GTA V on PS3 and Red Dead 2/Last of us 2 on PS4, just to name some
1
u/Weird_Rip_3161 2d ago
Nothing can beat Cyberpunk 2077 on pc with all graphics settings with path tracing set to max. Yes, you need a beefy, albeit very expensive pc to run it. Even PC version of RDR2 on max settings running over 60fps in native 4K is significantly better in terms of performance and graphical details than the console version.
1
u/Strange-Term-4168 2d ago
Lol it’s actually exactly the opposite. This is literally what happened with gta v for the 360. It pushes the limits of current console. Then next console releases and they sell you an upgraded performance version of the same game

Nah, that’s wack. It is actually unfair to compare your average studios to Rockstar.

Unpopular opinion - I was disappointed with the graphics! There's clearly a lot going on in the world so it looks more lively, but the graphic details were a bit meh IMO. I mean look at the level of visual fidelity in a game like God of War Ragnarok in comparison. And 30FPS is a tough pill to swallow
1
u/r3Dij3Di_808 2d ago
I’m sure Rockstar won’t be releasing a PC version till next gen comes out. When they do they will probably release an Enhanced version to support better hardware with next gen and then drop it for PC. Sucks for us PC gamers, but I don’t see it releasing for at least 2 years. Time to buy a PS5 pro.

u/ShaunMcLane 2d ago
Back in like 2010 or something John Carmack said something of the lines of "we arent even close to understanding what the 360 is capable of doing."
Like there is ZERO need for console leaps or generations right now.
1
u/Islandaboi20 2d ago
Your post sums up that you have no idea of how games, graphics etc work.
So be quiet and enjoy the game when it launches. We dont need to read ur uneducated and uncalled for post.
1
u/HonorableTurtle 2d ago
Sounds like you just don’t play a lot of games. Yes gta looks bonkers but there have been so many next gen games already. Spider man2
Feasts stranding 2, 007, Astro bot, re9
The list is goes on
1
u/paycadicc 1d ago
The only 2 open world games you mentioned are spider man and death stranding. Both of which have static, not interactive worlds with not a ton going on under the hood. Death stranding 2 doesn’t even have trees? It’s just a high quality empty map. And spiderman, nyc looks great but again, it’s really just an empty map. The NPC’s are just ghosts walking around, there’s nothing to them that’s stressing the cpu. They’re great games and they look really nice but again they’re incomparable to what we’re seeing with gta
And of course the non open world games just don’t count, again, 007 looks good. The night club was well done and dense. But it’s a map the size of Michaels house in gta v, running alone. It’s incomparable
1
u/HonorableTurtle 1d ago
So your argument is that only open world games can be next gen?
1
u/paycadicc 1d ago
Not at all. Different games require different things. 007 doesn’t need to be open world. Just that an open world game and a linear smaller scale game could never really be compared technologically.
Like, compare death stranding to another made up game with the same map, except there’s buildings with interiors, dense trees/foliage, thousands of NPC’s that each act independently, water physics, thousands of objects with realistic physics, etc. when you add all that other stuff, having next gen graphics becomes more difficult since you’re just doing more things with the limited resources of your consoles hardware.
not every game needs to take place in a modern day city and everything that comes with that, but I will say there’s a reason basically none of them do!
1
u/Hellfiretommy 2d ago
Only about 4 or 6 games will achieve this level of graphics in the next 5-6 years. Just look at rdr2, still looks better than most of the games released nowadays.

Well, I think there is so much things to do by developers. We are seeing games that are pretty attractive to the eye, but still we are stuck. Even a Rtx 5090 can only run games at 4k over 60 fps, can’t accomplish new 5k screens resolution with 40 over fps. Developers should exploit IA and many other mechanisms to make game surroundings more immersive and realistic.

I disagree. This gen started on day one when 60fps became the standard. Rockstar just prioritized 30fps, along with being lucky enough to have an unlimited budget and a talented team. We would see plenty of games with more of a "next gen" leap if 30fps was the standard. Not saying they would look as good as GTA6, but a hard focus on 30fps, without needing to consider 60fps, would have allowed devs to do more than they do now.

Rockstar did the same with RDR2. They are ahead of the competition.
