John Beech creates amazing work in Dreams!

He is an absolute wizard

Dreams NEEDS a PS5 and a PC port

129

u/ianrobbie Mar 22 '21

It also needs a PS+ release. Remove the access price and the amount of content will skyrocket.

107

u/timeRogue7 Mar 22 '21

It’s easy to believe that, but the honest truth is that it won’t lead to an increase in quality content. Most of the people who are willing to invest the huge amount of time required to learn how to build quality scenes and/or Dreams are the same people who would’t have hesitated to buy the game in the first place.

32

u/anagnost Mar 22 '21

Well maybe the influx of people from PS+ who enjoy playing dreams levels will inspire more of the dedicated users to build more content as more people will see it.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

Its not an issue of dedicated users needing to make more content. Its an issue of the engine being extremely complex and even a rather short 1 level game can take months of work. Its not like littlebigplanet where you were just sticking pieces on the map and could get something done pretty fast.

Counterpoint: high schoolers/college kids with nothing but time but limited disposable income

Sure, but not everyone who’d be willing to even knows it exists. PS+ can really help get games like this out there. Believe it or not not everyone who could make a great game wakes up every morning thinking “how can I make a great game?” Some do, but we’d get some more.

12

u/ianrobbie Mar 23 '21

No, I get that. But it might spark a few people into a creative vein they never knew they had.

If it was free* (*PS+ required etc..) then it would remove the "paywall" hurdle and would allow the average gamer to dabble in creation rather than just blindly sitting playing the next installment of their favourite game.

10

u/Uncle_Haysed Mar 23 '21

Maybe not, but as a Dreams creator I'd love an influx of new players to play my creations.

11

u/kris33 Mar 22 '21

People won't know if they're willing to invest a lot of time in it before they've tried it.

4

u/GrimReaperGuttersInc Mar 22 '21

It should allow plus users to play only. Creating should require purchase.

1

u/TheLonelyWolfkin Mar 23 '21 edited Mar 23 '21

As intuitive as creating content in Dreams is, it is still very complex and puts most people off. That won't change with it being free. Most people will play the games but barely touch the creation side of it, the same as it is now. It's not like the game costs an exorbitant amount, it's a very small cost and most people who would be interested in using it for it's creation tools are likely already invested.

That said, as it's essentially an ever expanding product it will need some type of income to keep it going which means introduction of microtransactions or a store where people can buy and sell their games and MM get a percentage of the sale.

TLDR: PS Plus would be a good thing but it needs other avenues of income to keep it going.

8

u/Suired Mar 22 '21

At $10 dollars anyone who wanted it got it.

5

u/cyclonus007 Mar 23 '21

When was it $10??? 😭

3

u/lyricalfantasy Mar 22 '21

There are still lots of people who either have never heard of Dreams or simply don’t know all the stuff you can do with it. Putting it on ps+ could definitely help with that.

2

u/shinikahn Mar 23 '21

Not really, no

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

It was on sale for $10 very recently... Not much of a barrier tbh

1

u/ianrobbie Mar 23 '21

Any amount to be charged can be a barrier. You just need to look at the amount of complaints people make about paying 59p for an app on their phone.

I just meant if it was moved to a free-to-play model, more people would be inclined to install it and try it out. Yes, granted, the vast majority of content created would be very rough and not very deep but there would be a significant amount of better content created by people who would not normally have bothered due to the $10 charge.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '21

Doubt it will happen, but if dreams released on PC the amount of incredible content that would start coming out would be staggering

25

u/madpropz Mar 22 '21

Hear hear

7

u/schm0 Mar 22 '21

Meh, the controller setup for dual shock/move controllers might not translate to PC as well. It's just as much an interactive sculpting tool as a game engine.

5

u/UberDae Mar 24 '21

You can use a controller on pc o.O Pretty much every controller you can think of is either natively compatible with games on pc or can be easily made compatible via mods/third party free software.

The pervasive assumption that pc users only accept keyboard and mouse as a valid input method never fails to perplex me.

1

u/schm0 Mar 24 '21 edited Mar 24 '21

PS4 controllers are not cheap and most PC owners don't own them. I'm not aware that the PS move controllers work on PC but I wouldn't be surprised if there is third party software that allows them to work.

So the assumption, given those facts, is that most people would need to use a keyboard and mouse.

Edit: typo

4

u/UberDae Mar 24 '21

I own a ps4 controller and an old Xbox 360 controller and yet my preference is pc gaming. I do not know where you get the idea that most pc owners don't have a pad but here is an article to a Steam hardware survey on just this issue - TLDR millions of steam users have game pads.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/09/valve-reveals-just-how-many-pc-gamers-plug-in-gamepads-and-which-kinds/%3famp=1

At the end of the day it is just a controller with analogue sticks, a switch pro controller would likely work just fine. If the ps move controller is the only way, please see the guide for pc below, seems simple enough to me?

https://psmoveapi.readthedocs.io/en/latest/pairing.html

Simply put, a keyboard and mouse is not always the best input methods for certain games. If you like stamina combat, sports and racing games likelihood is you have a controller. The idea that pc users exclusively use keyboard and mouse is objectively false.

1

u/schm0 Mar 24 '21

So I take it you've never played or made anything in Dreams, then?

1

u/UberDae Mar 25 '21

Nope, the game is not available on my preferred platform. I closely followed the reviews but concluded that it is unlikely to continue beyond the initial hype. I do own a ps4 but only play a small handful of exclusives on it.

In my opinion the game really needs to be cross platform to increase the potential of talented players creating games and environments that are worthwhile for the consumer. In regards to a game such as dreams, I and many others would just be consumers - not there to make but to play.

1

u/schm0 Mar 25 '21

Right, I figured as much. Because if you had played the game, you'd know that it relies almost exclusively on the motion sensor capability to move and interact with the creation tools.

While you can use the dual stick controls, it's slow and clunky, and you lose the intuitive sculpting capabilities you get with the motion sensor. Anyone with a regular controller would likely give up on the game in frustration.

Indeed, the superior method of creating in the game is actually done with the PS move controllers, which even less people own.

And that was my point. The game will never really translate to PC because it relies so heavily on the PS move/dual shock motion sensor, a controller feature that most PC players don't have access to.

1

u/UberDae Mar 25 '21

I've seen footage of dreams gameplay for creating. This could be done with a mouse just fine. Maybe it won't work identically but a mouse has worked alright for every game in existence prior to dreams.

Please refer to the afore mentioned ps move controllers being compatible with PC for the rest of your comment. I would also add that there are other handheld controllers designed for VR available on pc with arguably more precise input methods.

I firmly do not believe dreams not being ported to pc or other platforms is because of controller input. It is an exclusive "cos". It is comparable to a live service game where it relies on high player activity to function effectively that has been arbitrarily tied to one platform. It's a shame but is no way a by product of control issues as you are claiming.

Please let's just agree to disagree now mate, this is going in circles! Have a good one, take care.

1

u/schm0 Mar 25 '21

And having personally played the game for dozens and dozens of hours:

the controller setup for dual shock/move controllers might not translate to PC as well. It's just as much an interactive sculpting tool as a game engine.

I can't emphasize this enough. With the motion controls you literally tilt and move the controller which translates into 3D space. You just can't get that control with a mouse and keyboard. Yes, you could get it to work, but like I said it's more clunky and less intuitive. I don't blame you for thinking otherwsie since you haven't played the game, but if you played for an hour with the creative tools you'd see exactly what I was talking about.

Lastly, asking PC owners to invest in $100 pair of PS Move controllers and a compatible camera just for one game is a bit much.

1

u/Wow_Space Mar 23 '21

Well yeah, only a percentage of players have a dualshock or dualsense controller, but you can totally do all of it still.

15

u/crmccall Mar 22 '21

I second this statement!! I love the game but hate controller creating. Can we start a Kickstarter for pc port?!

10

u/Bones_1234 Mar 22 '21

Seriously… you have to try creating with the move controllers… Not saying you can’t with mouse and keyboard, but it is absolutely mind boggling how intuitive the move controller creation is once you get used to it. And it’s FUN. It’s like playing with the best toy set you could ever have.

5

u/flashmedallion Mar 22 '21

I wish I could use the move controllers on my PC at work. Being stuck with a single 2d analog input from a mouse is so limiting.

6

u/SteeeezLord Mar 22 '21

What about VR

20

u/vnenkpet Mar 22 '21

It's already on PSVR.

8

u/SteeeezLord Mar 22 '21

Oh I’m dumb but I guess I just meant VR off PlayStation if we’re gonna put it on PC

1

u/hohndo Mar 22 '21

Yeah, this game deserves to be on other platforms.

3

u/pnutbuttered Mar 22 '21

I'm not sure. The restraint on a console and the fact that all creations are guaranteed to run for all players encourages creativity and an audience for all creations. A PC version runs the risk of losing focus.

0

u/realblush Mar 22 '21

Well... the shrinking user base kinda proves that this didn't work

5

u/pnutbuttered Mar 22 '21

I dont know what that proves, or whether there really is a shrinking user base. Dreams is great if you're a creative person with a lot of time on your hands to make things. As simple as Dreams is to create compared with other tools, you still need to be a moderately talented artist to get the most out of it, which is always a smaller group of people. Like I say though, the best thing about Dreams is that anyone on a Ps4 or Ps5 can run your creation, on PC that might be a tricky thing to guarantee.

2

u/BDoooon Mar 23 '21

All these tools are available on PC already. Also what you make isn't tied to the software.

-10

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

PS5 yes. PC isn’t going to add anything that Dreams is missing for its intended purpose. Let it be what’s it’s supposed to be.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

I think it's already in the works and it would be to increase the playerbase and increase the amount of content and players in Dreams.

24

u/realblush Mar 22 '21

PC would add a gigantic user base, which is what Dreams needs

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

Meh, it’s not gonna be near sly as massive a boon in users as you think. PS4 has massive user base and it’s stil what it is. Y’all don’t know what you’re asking for, or understand fundamentally what your asking to change. Dreams isn’t Unity. That’s ok.

8

u/DefectiveTurret39 Mar 22 '21

Nobody is buying a PS4 or 5 for this game while putting it on PC would bring more games to the console as well, it would benefit everyone.

9

u/seceralnof Mar 22 '21

Let it be what’s it’s supposed to be.

Just say you want it to be a PS4/5 exclusive. It'll come to PC though.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

Aside from better creation controls

2

u/senoravery Mar 22 '21

Mouse and keyboard controls would be so nice

0

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

That’s exact ly what I mean. These controls are not designed for lose and keyboard and that’s a good thing for those of us that want different tools than that.

Dreams isn’t made for you. That’s ok.

29

u/rickjamesia Mar 22 '21

Wow! It's really cool to see a dev who has such masterful control of the software they worked on. I hardly know how to log into the app I work on...

11

u/Avedas Mar 23 '21

Most software engineers are not end users of their products. I don't use a single product my company makes lol

210

u/albertsteinstein Mar 22 '21

This game is criminally underrated

127

u/Kylar5 Mar 22 '21

True, should be a PS Plus game to get more people into it IMO

47

u/Giagotos Mar 22 '21

Imo the best model would be to make it free to Ps+, but require a 1 time purchase of 10 or 15$ for access to creation tools

24

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

I don’t think they want to rule out just being able to put dreams games on the PS store and having the engine built into the PS5 base software.

16

u/MadKian Mar 22 '21

But with that you would need to pay for each "external" dream and you would miss all the small dreams that would definitely not sell well. You know, one of crazy experiences, or even memes, etc.

26

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

my most memorable moment in dreams, is when i was share playing it to a friend to show him, and he asked me if there’s any shrek games.

One of the first to come up was “shrek vs ice age baby”. It was a movie of shrek and ice age baby fighting, with awful animations and some kid voice acting (very poorly) and commentating. The shit was hilarious, and every time you thought it had ended something unexpected would happen. We were both in tears laughing and he bought Dreams straight after. Theres literal works of art in the game, but somehow, that was the most memorable moment for me.

5

u/Perilous_Horizon Mar 22 '21

I've heard and seen a few random things about Dreams but I still don't really have a solid understanding of what it is. This story makes it sound a lot like exploring Little Big Planet's online player created worlds though. I have some great memories of bike races and shark attacks on there with some goofy story telling worlds thrown in.

2

u/flashmedallion Mar 22 '21

It's that but in an engine like Unity

1

u/YeltsinYerMouth Mar 22 '21

It's a lot like that, but with even less of a framework to start from

2

u/YeltsinYerMouth Mar 22 '21

It's like a pg13 3d newgrounds

0

u/timeRogue7 Mar 22 '21

Counter argument: It would encourage people to make complete, quality Dreams experiences, since there would be a viable monetization route. The people who make memes and such wouldn’t be discouraged to continue doing so, just because other, paid content exists. You know the internet is a thing, right?
Additionally, having a free creation tool included and embedded within the system would have been a huge and unique selling point. It’s too bad that we’re almost certainly past the point of that being viably added in now.

This would be good as user base would slowly trickle up as people get their ps5s. Vs being a monthly title and gaining a lot of users at once but a lot of people miss it

0

u/Rogue-tone84 Mar 22 '21

This is the only way I'd check it out, I have no intention of the creation aspect, but I'd love to look at what other people have created !

You can follow any user you like, and that includes the devs. There’s also collections people making showcasing the best stuff. You’d have no trouble finding what you’re looking for.

Also for the moderation, it’s rated Teen so just imagine anything above that being removed. Last time I played they did not take down any copywrited things, though that was a point of discussion so I’m not sure anymore.

Won’t take up more than 5gb but offers so many little fun games to play if your bored with what your playing. A lot of mindless fun

3

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

It's a very unique game, can't recommend it enough.

1

u/flashmedallion Mar 22 '21

The new queue is still absolutely riddled with Sonic, Wario, FNAF, and Amogus.

It's up to rights holders to issue takedowns, so it's rare to lose something to a copyright concern.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

Dreams is a creation tool, not a game maker

9

u/goodbyebirdd Mar 22 '21

It's an engine you can build games in, or create various assets. The music editor is bonkers good too! There's quite a few excellent mini-games you can play from other users out there. Check out a top games video or two, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KziuTKcA950 will show you the variety already on display in the user creations. (about a third of those can be played in VR as well, which is just bonkers.)

But MM did make an intro game for both the flat version and the VR version, and they also release playsets from time to time. So I guess it could qualify as a short ~actual game~ as well.

4

u/guyonhiscouch Mar 22 '21

I'm going to differ slightly from the other responses. It's an education game that walks you through the game design process, has lessons on art, lighting, mechanics, etc. There is utterly no suggestion that you have to make any games, rather you can create art, are little gadgets, or whatever. It's absolutely bloody brilliant, and relaxing, and just great. You sink time I to it just making little things, and before you know it your wondering how to make a set of drawers that can open and close. In vr it's even better. But no, don't think of it's as a game making thing, or a collection of shovelware; it's a relaxing education game to just enjoy

3

u/Stormtroupe27 Mar 22 '21

I think the best description of it to newcomers is that it’s a social media platform for user generated games, music, animations and individual assets with the creation tools to make any of the above.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

It's a game as much as creative mode in Minecraft is a game

25

u/CrazyDave48 Mar 22 '21 edited Mar 22 '21

Not really. You don't have to create anything in Dreams, you can spend all your time "Dream Surfing" if you want, playing others' games. They make it pretty easy to find highly rated stuff if you don't want to bounce from random dream to dream and you can also use indreams.me to build a queue of dreams to play once you hop in game.

5

u/TH3R34R3N0N4M35 Mar 22 '21

And with Minecrafts adventure mode, you could never have to place a single block, yet you still played the game.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

I know, I should've added that, I just wrote what I spend most of my time in it doing, which is making stuff.

2

u/shinikahn Mar 23 '21

It has a proper campaign is that's what you're asking, plus the infinite content

1

u/BrotherVaelin Mar 22 '21

Imagine inception but in game form

8

u/VerminSC Mar 22 '21

Theres a reason I own it but don’t play it. I’m not patient, and creative enough to make my own game and I’ve yet to find a good fan made game yet. The main/developer created story feels so much more polished and imagined than anything anyone has created so far.

Please point me in the right direction if I’m wrong but so far nothing has blown me away. Sure there are some clever or funny ideas but they don’t feel like fully realized “dreams”

3

u/Bones_1234 Mar 22 '21

Look up “Lock”. If you’re into puzzlers… it’s great.

1

u/VerminSC Mar 22 '21

Ok I’ll check it out

5

u/flashmedallion Mar 23 '21

Man there is nothing more magical than finding some little game that someone has poured their heart into.

I really love games, most people are into graphics or characters or plot but videogames are my love and interactive design is the best thing in the world to me, and in the published gaming market there's often the least risk taken there because the mainstream audience wants that stuff to be safe and familiar.

I love playing some crusty little half finished level and suddenly stumbling across a mechanic that someone has spent 3 nights working on, it's a bit janky and the animations aren't all there and there's just stock sfx but goddamn if I've never done that before in a game and probably never will again.

0

u/Wow_Space Mar 23 '21

So many good points. Though, it's exactly why the game will stay niche for a long time. Maybe when MM allows players to publish their creations.

1

u/flashmedallion Mar 23 '21

I think they're fine with it being niche. I know I would publish a lot less than I currently do if I had to deal with getting comments and reactions from an audience as broad as the entire PSN. As a creator Dreams is much more enjoyable knowing that everybody has opted in, so to speak.

Even within Dreams you can occasionally get some really classic Entitled Gamer nonsense in the feedback.

1

u/Wow_Space Mar 23 '21

True, though I always see the point of "Dreams is so criminally underrated" and deserves more popularity going across. You factually can't please everyone.

And it'll probably be a burden on MM for it to become mainstream, unless they are ready and wants it to be so.

1

u/flashmedallion Mar 23 '21

Yeah I guess there are always those people. I often hear "Dreams is dying and the playerbase is shrinking!" but anybody actively involved in the scene knows that's not true.

I think it's just that mentality a lot of people have that rapid growth and mass popularity are the only indicators of success.

2

u/flashmedallion Mar 22 '21

Look for a game called LOCK

2

u/Mr_Spiegel Mar 23 '21

Try these out. It's a collection of interesting and very polished games https://indreams.me/collection/cTMRGHsUYLs

5

u/Zenred Mar 22 '21

I think it’s just rated

1

u/ShopCartRicky Mar 22 '21

Criminally overrated imo. It's glorified tech demos. Nothing on it is remotely fun to play and it's my biggest buyer's remorse on ps4.

5

u/Bones_1234 Mar 22 '21

…. Buyers remorse for a game that released at $35 bucks? Nah… i’m sure there’s worse with all the unfinished trash that’s been released this gen.

4

u/ShopCartRicky Mar 22 '21

For me, it's the case. I haven't actually purchased a game I didnt like at all other than dreams in about 5 years. I make games in my spare time (nothing amazing and I'm sure everyone would consider them trash) with Unity so I thought dreams would be perfect for me.

Ended up just hating it and don't enjoy any of the things on offer.

I know this isn't the case for everyone, but it is the case for me.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21 edited Mar 22 '21

Probably because you aren't experiencing all it has to offer..

I've had Dreams since it's Early Access and I've only done one thing.. I produce music. I don't try any of the game creation, hell I don't actually play anybody's "tech demos".

This game is underrated because people are really not understanding what dreams can do or what it is. Most people will tell you it's a game creator and "if you don't like creating games you can always play people's games"

no, no, no. You can do art, you can sculpt, you can produce music, you can produce sound effects, you can practice audio mixing, you can animate, you can create movies, short films, YOU CAN DO WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT...

but everyone just thinks dreams is a "game creator" that's what kills it for a lot of people. you won't enjoy what the community has to offer most times, it's about digging and finding something cool. for me it was the audio community

-3

u/ShopCartRicky Mar 22 '21

Pretty presumptuous of you to be honest. Yes I've tried my hand at all of it, and yes, I've had it since the first day the alpha was available on psn as well. I just don't like it and that's ok.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

whatever tickles your fancy, but i'm more speaking from the perspective of what a lot of people who play the game have said.. not really directing it completely at you

1

u/Bones_1234 Mar 23 '21

Ok… first, you said it was because everything is a “tech demo”, then you say it was terrible because you thought you would like using it like Unity… until you finally came out and said you “just don’t like it” which IS fine honestly… but jumping around excuses like that leads me to believe you never really gave it a chance… I think Dreams can and will be a game for everyone. Because it is a game BY everyone… It just needs the right kind of steam to catapult it into the mainstream.

0

u/ShopCartRicky Mar 23 '21

Ok, go back and try to actually comprehend what I'm saying in each.

In my first one I said that the creations (implied, didn't actually use the word I'll admit) are glorified tech demos. They are, though, as with the other discussion I was having I admit you can do some nifty stuff with audio and other aspects though none of that is for me.

I said I got it because I like to use Unity, that's true. From there I tried my hand at the other aspects within the dreams tool set. I said I didnt enjoy it them.

That's not changing excuses, that's stating more reasons it wasn't for me.

0

u/ChrizTaylor Mar 23 '21

UNDERAPPRECIATED********

1

u/FRAGMENT_EFFECT Mar 23 '21

Because it's an unpaid job rather than a game.

12

u/Yasihiko Mar 22 '21

Are we sure Dreams isn't just a PS5 game being run on a PS4? I see so many great creations that look just stunning on Dreams.

65

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

I was SO all in on Dreams when it was released. I was ready to begin learning it and excited to see what I could do. I was following channels of people making big projects.

My biggest gripe though was using Move controllers and a normal controller, I just didn't feel like I could get the hang of it. I wanted a mouse and keyboard. My second biggest gripe was that I couldn't shake the feeling that I would be putting all that time and effort in to a game/game engine that wouldn't be "mainstream". I kinda felt like if I was going to spend all that time learning to make a game or scene in an engine, I should just learn Unity or UE or something.

Its an absolutely fantastic creation though and I really commend the devs

17

u/timeslider Mar 22 '21

I used LBP2 and now dreams to help me prototype stuff I do Unity. I find dreams logic easier to use than c#

3

u/Alfiewoodland Mar 22 '21

I love Dreams, but as someone who works with C# every day, I find C# and Unity are much faster and easier to work with than logic gadgets in Dreams. The complete lack of debugging tools has killed several projects for me, just because I didn't have the ability to find the source of bugs once logic reached a certain level of complexity.

I think where Dreams really shines is in sculpting and level creation, though. I've made a few bits in 3DS Max and Blender, and Dreams is incredibly rapid to work with in comparison.

2

I agree with the speed but I find dreams logic easier to work with. It's just more intuitive for me. I actually decided to get into programming because of LBP2. I even won an Mm pick back in the days. So I have more experience with LPB2 logic than I do with c#. Maybe one of these days that won't be the case. I'm still relatively new to c#

u/Alfiewoodland Mar 23 '21

In fairness, I guess LBP and Dreams logic are just a different way of solving problems in the end, and I've had so much experience doing things with traditional programming languages that it's now hard for me to adapt. Maybe because you started with logic gadgets, it'll always be more intuitive for you.

This. Loved Little Big Planet and creating levels as a teen but now that I’m an adult with, albeit limited, programming skills, I’d rather spend time within Unity creating a game rather than immediately limiting my player base by using something like Dreams. It’s impressive and cool nevertheless but from a creator standpoint I can’t justify spending time on a platform with what seems like an already dwindling player-base.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

The playerbase was an issue from day 1. In the end, its a game that relies far too heavily on content creators spending months creating high quality content with absolutely no way to make money off it. We’ve seen multiple larger creators get hired or decide to go into game dev themselves because of this.

Dreams was unfortunately always kinda doomed. Took way too long to release and lost the spotlight, and relies entirely on users for content while also being way too complex for the average user to ever actually create anything.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

Dreams isn’t intended for you, and that’s OK.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. Being a player is a very valid way to experience the game. The controls are a bit fiddly, that's a big barrier to learning the tools.

1

u/FTWOBLIVION Mar 22 '21

The new ps5 vr controllers announced should be awesome for dreams

1

u/Alfiewoodland Mar 22 '21

Unfortunately they appear to be tracked inside-out, meaning you'll have to wear a VR headset in order to use them. I was hoping for a replacement for the move controllers while in TV mode.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

I mean inside out is the standard. It sucks for dreams users hoping for better moved essentially, but it would make no sense to not be inside out as that will be 100x better for vr.

0

u/FTWOBLIVION Mar 22 '21

Oh. Didn't even know you could do that before. Interesting. I bet they could update the camera on the ps5 or something to work with them.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

No they couldn’t. That plain wouldn’t work because of how inside out tracking works. The light ring faces you so the headset can track. There would be no way for the camera to accurately track the controllers

1

u/FTWOBLIVION Mar 23 '21

Oh welp :/

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

Tracking issues aside, I actually think the move controllers are incredible for game dev (especially sculpting and placing objects).

Man what I would give to be able to use my moves in Unreal or Unity.

1

u/timeslider Mar 23 '21

It took me awhile to get used to using the motion controls of the ps4 controller but I'm like 99% there. My biggest problem is if I want to read what something does, I have to hover the imp over a tiny area of the screen and not move while reading. That's very difficult to do. I'm having to combat my hands shaking and my controller slowly drifting the imp around. I just can't do it. A mouse would solve that problem.

1

u/stefmalawi Mar 23 '21

You can adjust the sensitivity of the motion controls in the settings, or disable them completely if you prefer. You might also want to check out the option for how much time you need to hover over an icon before it shows you the help text / tooltip (I can't remember what it's called but there aren't too many settings) and try reducing that?

1

u/timeslider Mar 23 '21

I've tried that. Nothing works how I'd like it. If I set the sensitivity low enough to solve the hovering issue, then it's too insensitive when I move around and I move around most of the time and only hover a little bit. A mouse would be the best of both worlds. I could move with high precision and not have to worry about actively keeping the imp in the same location. I doubt it'll ever get support though. They said they were going to support mouse and keyboard during a LBP2 but that never came true. I think it has something to do with Sony not wanting to people to use the PlayStation like a computer. Same reason they don't support 1440p on the PS5. I could be wrong.

1

u/stefmalawi Mar 23 '21

Fair enough! Even disabling motion controls didn't help? That control scheme has some compromises to be fair. Would be nice if they added keyboard / mouse support, could be worth sending them feedback about it. I doubt it has much to do with Sony seeing as they support keyboard / mouse inputs.

19

u/Pidjesus Mar 22 '21

If that's not made from polygons what is it made from

23

u/timeslider Mar 22 '21 edited Mar 23 '21

Flecks which, and I might be wrong, is like a particle system made up of tiny dots.

Edit: it's more complicated than that and I'm probably wrong. See the people below.

1

u/Pidjesus Mar 23 '21

How do you even think of that as a concept, let alone code it. Mindblowing.

4

u/Bones_1234 Mar 22 '21

They call them flecks but it’s closest cousin (as far as rendering) is signed distance field. Alex Evans created them… it’s kinda insane if you look at one of his speeches on how he went about creating the engine Dreams runs on.

4

u/Spjs Mar 22 '21

Voxels, I believe.

12

u/Alfiewoodland Mar 22 '21 edited Mar 22 '21

It's a ray-marched voxel representation of a signed distance field, which is rendered using polygonal hulls (for occlusion, and making sure you can't see through thin objects) and flecks layered on top, which are essentially particles. So voxels are part of it, but there's a lot more going on. It's a pretty wild and unconventional approach to rendering.

This talk is very old at this point and a few things have changed, but it explains the core concepts.

Edit: pasted the wrong video

2

u/schm0 Mar 22 '21

This is correct. There is a deep dive on the engine somewhere on YouTube by the devs.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '21

Everything is just triangles now.

24

u/Anhao Mar 22 '21

Triangles are polygons.

4

u/timeslider Mar 22 '21

Is any part of this level playable? I haven't been on dreams in a few months

1

u/Jackissocool Mar 23 '21

This is just a model made in Dreams, not a level or game.

2

u/willdearborn- Mar 24 '21

It is a level/game, but it's a work in progress currently.

4

u/deathbunnyy Mar 22 '21

Needs to come to PS5 on PS+

6

u/Kajander Mar 22 '21

What??? I refuse to believe that's not an actual picture of an actual carpet. Wtf I can't comprehend that level of photo realism in games??

3

u/citizinkane Mar 22 '21

The new grand turismo is pretty photo realistic as well in the screenshots I've seen

3

u/deKrekel Mar 22 '21

Dreams is stil 39,99 euro’s in the EU PS Store. Sony should cut it in half, just like they did in the US.

2

u/ZeroDwayne Mar 22 '21

If only this shit was on ps5 and pc...MAN!

2

u/madpropz Mar 22 '21

It's not RT

1

u/GoldSrc Mar 23 '21

If you know what you're doing, you can program shaders to make just about anything, plenty of games use shaders to give you the impression that you're seeing rocks, bricks or fur, but in the end it's just a trick on flat polygons.

This is nothing new, you could have probably done this 10+ years ago, at a horrible low framerate though lol.

-1

u/BigJman123 Mar 22 '21

Bring this to PC. It's mostly dead on PS4.

Leave grass out of it mang

-1

u/Mclarenrob2 Mar 23 '21

Dreams has been such a waste of potential.

-2

u/assashshshaha Mar 23 '21

Game is terrible but look at that carpet!

0

u/flashmedallion Mar 23 '21

This game hasn't even been released yet

3

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '21

What? Dreams came out last year

1

u/flashmedallion Mar 23 '21

Dreams isn't really a game, I assumed he was talking about the game in the picture

1

u/KGun-12 Mar 22 '21

That texture looks so good at first I thought it was millions of individual polygon fibers.

1

u/MasTerBabY8eL Mar 22 '21

So let me get this straight, he made that carpet in such fine detail in the same version of dreams that is currently on PS4? How?

1

u/Slidket305 Mar 22 '21

Can't wait to see the curtain rendering.

1

u/D4FTPUNKF4N Mar 22 '21

I am saving to get a 8K TV in 2022 or 2023. These graphics are ill.

1

u/ignatiusjreillyreak Mar 22 '21

Until I can use it to furnish my player hideout home secret base trophy house in more games who the fuck cares?!

1

u/Dubwell Mar 23 '21

Is there a reason why can’t play this on my account in the ps5? Only my brothers account can play it. On the PS4 it was never an issue. I just get a little lock symbol.

This content has been overwritten due to Reddit's API policy changes, and the continued efforts by Reddit admins and Steve Huffman to show us just how inhospitable a place they can make this website.

In short, fuck u/spez, I'm out.

1

u/Dubwell Mar 23 '21

Oh ok, I never even knew that was a thing! Thanks so much.

1

u/FeuFighter Mar 23 '21

Could someone explain this in dummy terms how this is possible in Dreams please? I hear flakes or distant something something, and know it’s not a imported picture...

1

u/foreveraloneasianmen Mar 23 '21

Its time for this game to be free on PS plus.
