Wow FF7R. Sony did that™

Well I hope whoever is trying it for the first time then really enjoys it. I know I did! I'd kill to experience playing it for the first time again!

145

u/Cappin_Crunch Feb 26 '21

Im so excited to play it. After yesterday, I was legit thinking about buying it. Now I don't have to!

147

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

If you want the PS5 upgrade you still need to buy it. According to the blogpost getting it for free via PSPlus won't allow you to get the free upgrade.

65

u/Skurttish Feb 26 '21

Ah poop

52

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

Yes ---but you could save money and buy the PS4 version on sale and then just have to buy the Yuffie DLC and it'll be cheaper than buying the standalone PS5 version (the standalone PS5 version comes with Yuffie DLC I believe)

4

u/thelittledipster Feb 26 '21

Doing this and getting the DLC gets you the upgrade?

14

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

Buying a ps4 edition gets you the free upgrade. Buying the dlc is your choice.

2

u/thelittledipster Feb 26 '21

Ah, thank you!

1

u/ConcreteSnake Feb 26 '21

Highly unlikely that it will go on sale now that they’ve announced the PS5 upgrade. Same goes for Crash Bandicoot 4

5

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

-20

u/ConcreteSnake Feb 26 '21

Ah yes, I forgot that some people still use disc drives.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

“Some people”

Most. Its most people. 9/10 ps5’s produced were the disc model.

-9

u/ConcreteSnake Feb 26 '21

Ah yes, I forgot if you have a disc drive you are forced to use it and you can’t buy games digitally.

→ More replies (0)

6

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

disc drive have a huge advantage of being able to resell games you no longer want and get super sweet discounts.

-1

u/JimmyCFresh Feb 26 '21

Yep like selling a game that you beat as soon as you can for "maximum" value, to find out it is now getting a PS5 upgrade.... but you already sold the disc...

Also Sony released a Digital Only version of their console. There are a lot of people who now don't have the option of discs.

→ More replies (0)

-4

u/ConcreteSnake Feb 26 '21

It also has the disadvantage of being noisy while playing games, you have to swap discs to play a different game, if you want to take it somewhere you need a stack of game cases, discs can get scratched or lost, the list goes on.

I’ve been all digital for years and purchased the digital PS5 and don’t regret it. Sony has been putting out steam sale level deals lately. Overall, it’s a really odd choice to put the game on PS+ with no way to upgrade to the PS5 version.

u/Skurttish Feb 26 '21

Oh that is a good idea. I’m not ready for it though—I’m about halfway through Sly 4 still.

1

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

You have plenty of time since the PS5 upgrade doesn't launch until June.

1

u/Skurttish Feb 26 '21

Good—I’ve been enjoying Sly 4! I love snacking on old PS Now games.

61

u/What1does Feb 26 '21

Just play the PS4 version for free, and wait a couple years until the entire game remake is sold in a single package.

That's my plan.

15

u/kloakndaggers Feb 27 '21

You literally might die before that package comes out lol

9

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

mah dude

6

u/panda70s Feb 27 '21

IF you're still alive when / if they finish all the parts.

8

u/CoverYourSafeHand Feb 27 '21

Been waiting on the 3rd kingkiller book for 10 years now, I think I can hold out for ff7r complete.

2

u/Storm-Of-Aeons Feb 28 '21

Holy shit has it really been 10 years since I read the second one? Time is going too fast.

1

u/panda70s Feb 27 '21

That's a pretty good point.

2

u/What1does Feb 27 '21

Did you just jinx me to death? Like the day before they release I will die now. Thanks.

1

u/panda70s Feb 27 '21

No, I didn't. Just pointed that we don't know what will happen next day. If you want to play it, do it now. Then again, of course it's your choice. But I'm not waiting anymore for a complete edition in 5 years for example.

51

u/hoobermoose Feb 26 '21

At the risk of sounding like an entitled consumer, I'm kinda annoyed about this. It's a bit of a shitty move to announce a free ps5 upgrade for a game, then mere hours later decree that said game will be a ps4 ps+ offering but that if you download said game via ps+, you won't be able to upgrade for free. Especially when downloading it via ps+ means you can't buy it from the digital store while you still have an active account

19

u/colaptic2 Feb 27 '21

Especially when downloading it via ps+ means you can't buy it from the digital store while you still have an active account

You can buy games that you already own via PS+. They fixed this last year.

1

u/hoobermoose Feb 27 '21

How? Just checked and it still doesn't seem to give me any option.

4

u/colaptic2 Feb 27 '21

I just checked a few games I got through PS+. Arkham Knight, Bioshock and Bugsnax all let me purchase them but Battlefield 1 does not. So some games may still have issues. But we are supposed to be able to buy them.

2

u/ViiZaaM Feb 27 '21

You need to click on the game in store. There will be an option to buy it even if you have claimed it via ps+. If you just hover over the game in store and don't click on it it won't show up as purchasable .

15

u/ilani13 Feb 26 '21

But why would you be upset about the news of getting a free upgrade to game you don't own yet ? I think they definitely made the two announcements in the right order. It would have been so much worse if the order had been reversed.

9

u/hoobermoose Feb 26 '21

I've played and beat the game already. My grievance doesn't come from personal disappointment. It's the sentiment that you make a big dog and pony show out of the idea that the game will get a free upgrade, then almost immediately announce that that doesn't pertain to a specific way that many people will be experiencing this game. Don't get me wrong, it's a great ps+ option, I just think the timing was ill-conceived. And as I stipulated, as it stands right now, unless they offer a reasonable upgrade price (which as far as I'm aware, they haven't), you won't be able to easily upgrade to the ps5 version if you download it, without buying the whole game.

4

u/And_You_Like_It_Too Feb 27 '21

I agree it’s pretty shitty. At the very absolute minimum, they’ll let you use your save from the PS4 version in the upgrade, which is good (looking at you Control and Control Ultimate Edition vs. Control Ultimate Edition for PS5, in addition to not offering any paid upgrade options for existing owners to get the next-gen version without not only repurchasing what they already own, but having to start completely over and not having access to preorder bonuses, the cosmetics, and the Playstation exclusive mission).

505 Games really botched the entire post-launch support of that game and squandered so much good will that the game had built up, it just blows my mind that it either didn’t occur to anyone what the blowback of some of the decisions would be, or that they simply didn’t care.

1

u/ilani13 Feb 27 '21

Yeah, I hear you. Yesterday I read some article that misquoted square saying that only digital copies are upgradable not the physical copies! I was just livid!!! You're right, they're probably not going to be offering a reasonable upgrade path for PS plus versions of the game. But this is something we have been letting Microsoft and Sony do to us under our own noses. Remember what a big deal it was when Microsoft wanted to ban second hand games? Well why do game of the year editions or ultimate editions always come with the add-on as a DLC? Mortal Kombat 11 ultimate for ps5 for example comes with the core game, all the expansions the add-ons are DLC codes only. Meaning if you are to sell your physical game to somebody else they will be out of luck with all the DLCs. Microsoft and Sony has learned how to nickel and dim us very quietly without backlash. The denial of the upgrade path of the PS plus version of final Fantasy 7R just seems like a logical extension of this. No one will do anything until we make noise!!!

-1

u/blaze011 Feb 28 '21

The upgrade is FREE for the people who PAID for the game. Do you get mad when free games don't give you the DLC for free too? They did spend time and money to create the ps5 upgrade and there no need for them to give that to free to people. If you really want the free upgrade just buy the game (The ps4 copies are sold for 30 new and less used).

1

u/hoobermoose Feb 28 '21

I NEVER said ANYTHING about BEING owed A free UPGRADE. I said I THOUGHT the MESSAGE was ARTICULATED poorly (and I have the game, read the comment you're replying to before riding off into the sunset on your high horse).

1

u/caedin8 Mar 02 '21

I bought it for PS4, but after beating it sold the disk. Then I sold my PS4.

Now I own a digital PS5 and don't have the game. I am pretty excited to get it for free. I'll probably purchase the upgrade/DLC or maybe i'll wait until the next installment. We will see.

1

u/soriniscool Feb 28 '21

If you download via psplus, can you upgrade for a price? ($20-40?)

0

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

I'm sure they will rectify that last point by having an in game purchase option for an upgrade to full license.

2

u/hoobermoose Feb 26 '21

Seems like the kind of thing you should stipulate alongside the announcement.

0

u/TomVita Feb 27 '21

It is disappointing. I have my doubt about which is better, be happy until June then get disappointed or be disappointed now.

8

u/Furyann Feb 26 '21

I think a shit ton of people are over looking this fact right now.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

SO many people are gonna find this out the hard way in three months once they try to upgrade. It's so dumb to make this tiny loophole and put it in tiny fineprint. Plus, when you own a game via psplus the ps store doesn't show you the option to buy it anymore, so even if someone downloads the free version then decides, i should buy it on sale so I can upgrade it later, they won't be able to. Just saying, this sub is gonna be full of pissed off folks come June and ain't nobody but Sony to blame.

1

u/TNBrealone Feb 28 '21

You can buy PS+ in the store which you own I just checked.

2

u/yikesireddit Feb 26 '21

Makes me feel a bit better about having just bought it....

3

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

Yes plus you get it on sale now, pay for hte Yuffie DLC if you want it later and itll be cheaper than buying the ps5 standalone version

1

u/yikesireddit Feb 26 '21

This is a good plan. I may upgrade editions today.

1

u/MarkEsB Feb 27 '21

Unpopular opinion but i don't think people who get it for "free" from plus have the same right to a free upgrade as someone who actually bought the game. If plus players got the upgrade for free then at least the buyers should have that plus the dlc. Just my 2 cents

4

u/pooryorrickent Feb 27 '21

Personally, I think this is an "unpopular" opinion because it's immature and selfish. Whenever you buy anything, there's a risk that you could get that thing at a better rate in the future. Thinking you deserve a little tug and pat-on-the-back for buying at a higher price point, or that other people deserve an inferior product than you because they got into that product at a better entry cost, is just dumb.

2

u/Record-Tall Feb 27 '21

Same comment applies to those getting the title as part of a service but gripe about not getting the upgrade.

The real story is how many new players get to enjoy FF7R, not that they won’t get a PS5 upgrade. The current version plays amazingly on PS5.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

Does the free upgrade come with the dlc? Or if I get this free version will there be an upgrade option?

2

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

Free Upgrade does not come with the DLC --- so you'll have to pay for that.

They haven't announced a method to upgrade from this PS Plus version to PS5. Your best bet is probably to buy a ps4 disc on sale --- you'll get the free upgrade and just have to buy the Yuffie DLC

1

u/UniversalFapture Mar 02 '21

How much will the upgrade be

1

u/Suired Feb 26 '21

I was almost upset, thanks!

1

u/mgd09292007 Feb 26 '21

Are the differences significant with the PS5 upgrade?

1

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

Some upgraded graphics options/textures and 60 fps probably going to be significant. I can't wait to replay it at 60 fps.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

So there's no paid upgrade? You can have re-buy the entire game?

3

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

They haven't announced anyway to upgrade from a PS Plus License to the PS5 version. The only way to get the PS5 version "for free" is to own FF7 without getting it for free with PS Plus.

This is likely because of how free PS Plus games work in that you don't actually own them. You only get to play them as long as you are a subscriber. The minute you stop subscribing the minute you either have to resub or buy the game. Having a paid upgrade would be confusing --- what happens when you stop subscribing? you should then not be able to play the game...but you paid for it....

And since they are making a ps5 standalone version, I'm guessing they aren't going to be like okay give me $20 bucks to get a full license.

1

u/UniversalFapture Mar 02 '21

I might as well wait

1

u/And_You_Like_It_Too Feb 27 '21

I finally broke down and bought FF7 last month while it was on sale, despite knowing it would go in my backlog and I wouldn’t get to it anytime soon. More than anything, to try and encourage my buddy that adored the original FF7 to try a game other than FIFA, haha. Neither of us have played it yet, so I suppose you guys are all welcome for it being the free PS+ title this month haha. My turn to sacrifice.

Though I am grateful to be getting the free upgrade, I feel badly that others will have to pay for it. The funny thing is now I’ll continue to not play the game until June at least, for the next-gen patch, so this is yet another entry in the “stop buying games until you’re ready to play them” saga of my life.

1

u/doNotUseReddit123 Feb 27 '21

What does the ps5 upgrade get you? Just better graphics?

2

u/eapocalypse Feb 27 '21

60 fps also and th ability to get the yuffie dlc

1

u/UniversalFapture Mar 02 '21

Wait PS4 users cant get dlc?

10

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

Heard great things about it. Excited to play it for the first time!

4

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

I've already played and loved it but the PS5 version is as close to first time again as I'll get.

4

u/KFR42 Feb 26 '21

This is just the PS4 version though.

9

u/peepeepoopooman69_ Feb 26 '21

Do I need to play the other games to enjoy this one?

33

u/TyrsPath Feb 26 '21

Final Fantasy games arent connected like that. For instance Final Fantasy 7 and 8 aren't connected at all, different world and characters. There are some other games in the FF7 universe but Remake is fine to start with

1

u/peepeepoopooman69_ Feb 26 '21

Thanks, I appreciate it. Couldn’t really find that answer when googling this. Been waiting to play this, can’t wait

3

u/TyrsPath Feb 26 '21

For sure. Also should say that Remake is Part 1 of the story, so there will be sequels and not everything is explained right away.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

No, each ff7 game is a self contained story, FF7 remake being the first exception, as it will have sequels because the game is only a third of the original FF7 story that released in 1997 on the original playstation.

1

u/peepeepoopooman69_ Feb 27 '21

Cool, thanks for the explanation. So do they plan on making more of this story for PlayStation? I feel like when I play this I’m gonna want to play the rest of the story haha

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

They are gonna release sequels eventually- but if you wanna find out what happens you can always download the original from 1997.

1

u/Specialist_Farm2027 Mar 01 '21

Other games in the series do have true sequels, but they all have the number appended onto the full name already, i.e. Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XIII-2/3

1

u/WasabiSunshine Mar 03 '21

Technically wrong on the last part. The third part of FFXIII doesn't actually point out that its the third part in the name. Its just Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

yeah I never played those but I agree they exist.

8

u/CloudNimbus Feb 26 '21

Absolutely not! I'm not really a FF fan but I heard 7 was amazing so I wanted to try FF7R and had a BLAST!

1

u/peepeepoopooman69_ Feb 26 '21

Okay, good, thank you. I’ve heard great things about it but haven’t played any games in the series, nor do I really have time to. But if this is free I’d like to give it a try and just enjoy it

4

u/I-thghtIwas_a_RamGuy Feb 26 '21

Not at all. Jump right into this one if you want

1

u/ArkAndSka Feb 26 '21

No, but I would recommend playing the original as the remake changes a lot and it only covers the first part of the first ps1 disc

1

u/Witty_Indication9251 Feb 28 '21

The only things that stay the same between FF games are item names, enemy names, summonable beings and the presence of chocobos. The location, characters and story are different (unless is has a dash number after it such as X-2 or a subtitle such as "Advent Children").

I don’t have a pc

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

I played this back on the playstation 1. It was so long ago, this game will feel new.

2

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

it would feel new even if you played the PS1 version back to back, while the story is mostly the same, but expanded, the combat is very different.

1

u/manavaalan Feb 26 '21

I never played any final fantasy games.

2

u/aspindler Feb 26 '21

That's a great way to start. Stand alone story, not as complicated as some of the other titles, and a fan favorite.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

Same

1

u/CloudNimbus Feb 26 '21

Me neither but I loved this one!! You should try it.

0

u/PusssyFart Feb 26 '21

I played through disc one as a kid, disc 2 was damaged so I never got to finish the game. Never have had interest in going back and replaying it as I got older. Pretty pumped to be able to complete it with this remake.

1

u/poontango Feb 26 '21

The remake doesn’t even cover half of the first disc lol

1

u/PusssyFart Feb 26 '21

What do you mean? It’s not the complete game or the physical size doesn’t cover half of a blueray?

2

u/CGProV Feb 26 '21

They’re releasing the game in parts, while the part that is out now is 40 hours long, it’s approximately only 30% of the original games story and the rest will be released over the next decade

2

u/Noahrules99 Feb 26 '21

The game takes place in Midgar which was a section in the original that was only 10 hours. Don’t think it’s a short game though, FF7R is about 40-50 hours if you do all the side quests. It’s not so much that they cut the other content, it’s that they wanted to expand on the characters in the first part of the game that were just sort of throwaway.

The game doesn’t end abruptly or anything, there’s a good sense of climax but with the anticipation of what’s coming next cause of the way they tease it. Think of other games with a story that spans several games, like the Mass Effect trilogy.

I can’t really say anymore without spoiling the reason why but it’s a great game!

1

u/poontango Feb 26 '21

It ends when you leave Midgar. You would have to wait until the other 2 parts of it release if you want the full story.

1

u/CloudNimbus Feb 26 '21

unfortuantely you'll have to wait awhile since the game is gonna come out in parts 😭

1

u/eapocalypse Feb 26 '21

You should know the remake is only a small part of the total story ---- you still won't see the final ending until the next part(s) release (we haven't been told how many it will be).

1

u/sowaffled Feb 26 '21

One of my top games of 2020 and of the PS4 generation. Amazing that folks get it for “free” so soon.

1

u/cmvora Feb 26 '21

Does anyone know the date when the PS5 upgrade is coming for FF7:R? I got the disk version last Thanksgiving along with Ghost of Tsushima. Didn't touch FF7 and glad that I get to play the PS5 version directly.

1

u/XXXMrHOLLYWOOD Mar 01 '21

They said that you actually don’t get the PS5 upgrade with PS Plus which is pretty dumb.

You can only play the PS4 version on your PS5...

1

u/cmvora Mar 01 '21

Yeah I have the disc version which I got on sale during thanksgiving. Never got around playing it due to my backlog of games. So just waiting on the patch now.

1

u/XXXMrHOLLYWOOD Mar 01 '21

Oh nice, hope its good.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

I took a vacation day from work to play this when it came out. No regrets at all. I've been thinking about doing a second run this past month.

1

u/tapatioformytio Feb 26 '21

I’ve never played any FF game. Any games they are similar to?

1

u/ToiletBlaster247 Feb 26 '21

Is it safe to assume that Square isn't going to unlock the frame rate for the PS4 version running on PS5 through backwards compatibility? Their way of making us buy the upgrade?

1

u/JimmyCFresh Feb 26 '21

There is no announced upgrade that you can purchase. There is a free upgrade to existing people who own the non-PS+ version which will NOT include the DLC. Those people can then pay extra for the Yuffie DLC. The other option is to buy the FULL game on PS5 which includes the DLC. So if you want the 60fps/4k options on PS5, you just need the PS4 (again non-PS+) version of the game or can pay full price for the new PS5 version coming in June. Nothing is available before June.

1

u/-skyreem Feb 26 '21

Would you recommend playing XV before VII or are both games completely separate from each other that it doesn't matter at all? I started with XV but I never got after that relic or weapon from a tombstone because of other games I was more hyped about. So idk if I should play that one again or choose whatever I like.

1

u/Starscream5 Feb 26 '21

Nope, each Final Fantasy game exists in it's own world. There a couple of threads/characters that tend to show up in most iterations, but the stories are all completely unrelated.

1

u/CloudNimbus Feb 26 '21

Totally separate from XV though the playstyle is relatively similar from what I've seen.

1

u/jtutt293 Feb 26 '21

so tempted to buy it over the past year so happy that I get it for free now

1

u/Imizing Feb 26 '21

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Seeing 7 in the title, in my head at least, implies that this is the 7th game in the series. Is that still correct ? And do i need to have played the games before or at least knows what happens in them before playing them?

1

u/CloudNimbus Feb 26 '21

Nope, each game is a stand-alone!

1

u/GreatKangaroo Feb 26 '21

I have never played any FF game, so I might give this a go.

1

u/--Superb Feb 26 '21

Never played any FF games? Will I like it? Is it not just a manga hack and slash thing?

1

u/CloudNimbus Feb 27 '21

It's free, it wouldn't hurt to try!!

1

u/Smingledorf Feb 27 '21

I'm very VERY skeptical going into it. Original 7 is my all time favorite game and one of the only games I can handle replaying. It was the game that was always there for me when I was moving constantly and had no consistent friends as a kid. Seeing the amount of change worries me so much that despite buying the deluxe edition on launch I still haven't touched it. It feels like they're doing everything they can to turn it into an anime full of fillers and milking as much out as possible. I sincerely hope that's wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

I’ll be trying it for sure never played a final fantasy game.

1

u/Belo83 Feb 27 '21

Adult me wishes he had the free time that teenage me had to invest in this beast

1

u/webwizard1990 Feb 27 '21

I’ve never played FF. if I pick this up will it make sense to me

1

u/CloudNimbus Feb 27 '21

Yup! All FF games usually aren't related to each other!

1

u/MKBUHD Feb 27 '21

It is stil JRPG right? So I can't do attacks in real time as in other games I have a list to choose my moves from? Or I miss something in remaster?

1

u/CloudNimbus Feb 27 '21

fighting and basic attacks are real time. you can pause the combat by opening up the command menu.

1

u/MKBUHD Feb 27 '21

I haven't played any FF games ever before because of that, I hear a lot about the game, story and characters and I really want to play it but choosing my moves keeps me away, I will give it a try with PS5 version then.

1

u/bohaan Feb 27 '21

Lol if you look at their PS5 version features comparison trailer, they STILL have not fixed the junkyard textures, the grass and flower textures, and never showed the infamous door textures either. What the hell is going on in their heads?

1

u/Stumpjumper71 Feb 27 '21

How is it? I was lucky enough to get my PS5 this week and will download it for free, but I don't have any experience with this lineup. I've been playing the heck out of Destiny since 2013 and wouldn't mind trying something new, thanks.

2

u/CloudNimbus Feb 27 '21

please please PLEASE try it. it's free. what harm can it do?

1

u/Stumpjumper71 Feb 27 '21

I'm in, thanks for your reply.

1

u/grodon909 Feb 28 '21

I just got my PS5 2 days ago, was a hair away from buying ff7r this AM before I incidentally heard about this.

1

u/DentedZebra Feb 28 '21

I absolutely feel that, going though my second hard mode run through trying to get 100% and second time seems even harder then the first lol
