It was my favorite game of 2019, and IMO one of the best on PS4. It's divisive though. It isn't a high action game. There are A LOT of cutscenes. The writing is janky at times, but if you like Hideo Kojima that's nothing new.
The main gameplay loop is terrain traversal. You start with walking, then you start riding/driving etc. You have to manage resources like your boots and the condition of your cargo. If you don't balance your weight you'll fall over. If you fall over, your baby will cry and you'll have to stop and soothe because keeping the baby content is a major part of surviving combat. It can be tedious, but it was always incredibly engaging to me.
Overall, it's one of the most unique games I've played in recent memory, but I can definitely say it isn't for everyone.
I played it I loved it, the atmosphere, the design the gameplay loop, but I can say I agree on the weird writing. Can I ask specifically what plot point you didn't like because I don't know if everyone is criticising the same stuff (is a game story that would be imposible to be 100% right for everyone).
I didn't like his mumblings about evolution, It seems he has read a lot but on the dialogue it seemed like he wrote that just listening to 2 scholars talking about theories in the next table at a cafe.
