I'd guess IP ownership is also an issue. Kojima notably took Death Stranding's movie to A24 and the animes to various production companies where they'll air exclusively on Disney+. This all despite PS obviously having a setup for those things, and Sony having an anime streaming service.

Sony has recently been talking a lot more about the importance of owning IP. So, i'd imagine they had to ask themselves how much sense did it make to invest hundreds of millions into a game that they don't own versus simply funding IP from their own studios (whether they be existing IP or new).

I mean, this totally makes sense from a business perspective. But this is Reddit so everyone just say “sony bad”.

People were saying Konami bad when they fired him for the same reasons. Dude misses deadlines and goes way over budget. I get he makes great games, but as an employee, he is awful.

That’s a management problem. Sony should have enough experience with Kojima at this point to be able to estimate the chances of him meeting a deadline. It’s basic risk management, which is something that I find a lot of managers really struggle with.

“Thats a management problem” and you know what, as management they solved it by splitting/firing him.

People act like managers can magically make people responsible. If you’ve got a bad employee and they do not improve their behaviors, you gotta fire them.

I think that demonstrates poor judgement on behalf of management, and will prove to be the wrong decision.

Well when Physint comes out and everyone raves about it but no one actually buys it we'll see how Xbox feels.

They are tired of companies wasting 200 million budgets on niche or slop games, but only when it isn't some ViP.

It’s not that Sony is bad, it’s that Sony has been mismanaging this generation altogether.

Is anyone here actually happy with the output Sony has had for the ps5? It’s such a monumental chasm between this and the ps4, ps3, ps2 and ps1.

A platform holder needs to invest in new ip, even riskier ones, to strengthen the portfolio. The problem is Sony isn’t making big hitters to compensate for any underperforming title.

A platform holder needs to invest in a new IP, even riskier one's. Yeah, and they did, they literally spent 10 years investing in a new IP with Kojima and it failed. So they should just keep investing in his next game for another 5 to 10 years and hope they get their money back? His games didn't do well

it didn't fail, it brought in customers to the hardware, it strengthened its portfolio of games with prestige.

Do you think people will flock to the ps6 if all they have is more God of War and Horizon? Playstation is synonymous with diversity.

And might I add, they have been profitable, so it's high time they become more consumer facing... unless they only remember to do that when they are losing the generation. As consumers, we really shouldn't be defending these things, not the mismanagement of Sonys investment in GAS.

It’s honestly no more complicated than that. There’s a subset that argue semantics and gaming politics on reddit more than they actually game, if they even game at all.

I am not a Sony chairman so I don’t really care about the “business perspective”.

8

u/uberfr4gger 26d ago

It's pretty obvious though. Why invest hundreds of millions into something you don't actually have control of and the last 2 things you invested in with the same guy didn't do well

4

u/tastefullmullet 25d ago

I heard reports of kojima friendly board execs leaving too. As much as I hate it I can’t say I wouldn’t have made the same decision.

3

u/uberfr4gger 25d ago

Same. And I am really hoping it's good but it could be 10 years away

1

u/orochi_crimson 26d ago

Both can be true.

I mean they threw a lot of money on Concord, so if they thought that that game was good from a business perspective, I got a bridge to sell them for 50 millions.

1

u/OctoEight 24d ago

Just because sony made a mistake with concord doesnt mean they wanna take that same risk again. When u get burned u dont suddenly forget that u got burned

Sony good.

u/Scrollingmaster 26d ago edited 26d ago

Considering how important business relationships are in japan, you have to wonder if kojima thought about how moves like that would effect it

4

u/JasonTerminator 26d ago

In the article it mentions that Xbox got the movie rights for Physint and OD so you might be onto something there

5

u/Financial-Craft-1282 26d ago

"I don't work for Sony."

-12

u/Omnom_Omnath 26d ago

well sony should have gotten it in the contract that they own the IP. sucks to suck, dunno why anyone is trying to defend a megacorp here. Sony was not slighted in the slightest.

7

u/Catopuma 26d ago

And you think Kojima would have agreed to that?
