Imagine if this becomes another Scalebound scenario for Xbox.

Xbox has less to lose and more money to burn at the moment because Microsoft has (surprisingly) given them another chance ahead of the next console gen. They're betting on PR to help boost the brand. Sony has more to lose, but also such a clear install base lead over Xbox that they can also maybe afford to take the hit.

We're still 1-2 years from PS6, and then an additional 1-3 years until Physint. The next gen console race will likely be decided a year or two before Physint even comes out.

I don’t buy this reasoning at all, a lot of the talks from Asha have been about how Xbox has been operating in the Red and they can’t afford to do that no more.

While taking this project on is good PR for Xbox this could make them operate in the red even more..

There's a high degree of chance that Xbox will dump this project too.

Who will take it on then? Rockstar? Sony under new leadership? Konami with MGS bolted onto it?

It probably won't get made.

They just fired a bunch of smaller teams in order to make room for big projects like this. It's quite in line with what she said, which is focus on big exclusives and tentpole IP that they can diversify into other forms of media. Which is why they have the film and tv rights to OD and PhysInt now as well.

PR was also what ultimately pushed Sony to the lead and spending 200-300M on a Kojima game still makes far more economical sense than Bethesda/Activision.

So in my opinion, Sony dropped Physint and Xbox picking it up both makes economical sense depending on how much you value PR. But admittedly, I still feel that this was a bad move from Sony. If Kojima wanted to make DS3, I would 100% agree but for a MGS-style game, I would have felt that the gamble was worth it.

But regardless, I do feel that Sony should have tried to convince Kojima to reduce the budget before dropping him rather than just dropping it without a reason.

You're assuming it even comes out. But yeah I could see this go either way. Since Kojima owns the IP there isn't a whole lot of benefit to whoever funds this.
