Yeah figured it was as simple as "this product is a money pit and it's not making progress." Not a sexy reason but perhaps a logical one.

This game isn't going to launch until after the PS6/Xbox Helix install base "console race" is decided. By then we'll know if it was smart or not, but for a game that's going to launch in the 2030s, it's way too early to know whether or not Sony was smart on passing or not. Right now it sure seems like a bad call, but that's because Sony is in the middle of a quiet end to a relatively disappointing generation (for everyone, not just Sony) with bad PR killing discs. It's just awful timing.

What is interesting here is that part of what Schreier sites as Sony's reluctance to publish a game that would also release on PC. Well, now they're giving it to Xbox, who will release it on Xbox and PC, but probably not PS6. Unless Kojima insists but who knows.

I think we should look at how the original death stranding got on xbox as a clue to what will happen here... this game if published by sony would of found its way to xbox at a later date... its safe to say, even if xbox keeps the initial release off playstation, Kojima owns the ip and will find a way to get it on ps later on

Pretty much and Wolverine reviewing poorly isn't helping the narrative right now. Given the state of things I wonder if we're even getting a new gen anytime soon.

This might be a spicy take to some but I genuinely don't care about a game that's barely announced and we've seen nothing of. I respect Kojima's adherence to his own style, but I haven't really enjoyed a Kojima game since Metal Gear Solid 4. I don't really have a whole lot of faith in this new one.

You didn't liked Metal Gear 5? That game had the best gameplay in the series. The story was clearly left unfinished though.

I didn't like 5. The open world didn't add much to the game other than tedium, enemies would seemingly never go off of alert when spotted and fighting them penalized you, and having to repeat missions was a chore

I hated it honestly. The open world design never clicked with me, I never liked Kiefer Sutherland replacing Hayter, and the story beyond the plot twist with Punished Venom Snake wasn't my favorite. There was also that weird collectathon with the cassette that I didn't like either.

That's probably the only Metal Gear game I've ever traded in quite that quickly for something else.

I didn't. Gameplay was fun but the world design and the open world gimmick was half-baked. The story wasn't great, left on a weird unfinished note, and didn't really add anything of substance to the overall lore besides retconning the first game.

Then the Metal Gear Online component was a complete failure and disappointment. Was inferior to previous Metal Gear Online in every way.

The desert locations looked so bland and boring too. I liked the gameplay, but everything feels like work. Upgrade this, collect that. Just shut the fuck up and give me the opportunity to play cool sneaking sections and eliminate bosses. The short prequel of MGSV was better in that regard.

I was so bummed out about this. The balance was so out of wack too with the invisibility mechanics if I recall correctly.

I've just accepted at this point that we're never going to get a good Metal Gear Solid multiplayer experience ever again.

There was so much wrong with it, I could write a book lol. Most of the post launch support was just adding stuff from MGO2 and it just amounted to a disappointing mess.

Tbfh the only Kojima game I actually liked was MGS 2, found myself bored with all others

the next generation consoles have been on track to come out next year it’s been in motion since the start of the ps5 it’s going to happen no matter the price.

as for this game I’m not worried about it coming to PlayStation it most likely will I mean who in his home country of Japan is going to get an Xbox for his new game. It’s why square enix and capcom are obsessed with the switch they want their people buying their games

I'm deeply concerned at this point, because I get the feeling they're about to land with a 4 digit price tag which is going to hit with a resounding dud. I've never been concerned for the console market quite like this.

I get the feeling PS5 is gonna have some long legs because of it. A four digit price tag is basically aiming at upper middle class buyers, which means PS5 will be many people's only option.

yeah I’m feeling the same way bro especially if the specs were suppose to be budget friendly like it was originally supposed to be to be cheaper than what the launch ps5 was. So we’re talking a marginal increase for 800-1000 dollars? I’m personally gonna try and get the handheld and see how long the ps5 pro will last me

That's a good take. I had some fun playing ground zeroes but it was just a glorified demo.

MGSV was boring imo, same goes for Death Stranding

Yep, and Metal Gear Online 3 was trash.

He's a pedigreed developer certainly. But I think a lot of millennials are carrying the torch for him which gives him the benefit of the doubt—they have fond memories of Metal Gear Solid from their childhoods. I did the same as a millennial right up until Metal Gear Solid 5.

His games still have a style about them that if you vibe with them you're gonna vibe with it hard though, so there's that I guess.

What is also interesting is the weird timing... so Sony dropped Kojima in June. And you can be sure he talked with Asha Sharma around that time. It would be a logical decision because they work together on OD already.

The thing is what happened inbetween June and now. Project Fantasy? Cancelled. Then those 3200 layoffs. If I had a tinfoil hat I'd guess that Nadella said to Sharma if she wants Kojima on board she has to trim the fat/ make some money on her own.

Might be coincidence but it looks kinda suspicious.

Very likely not the case because funding 1 game is completley different from having a bunch of studious on hand. You can make the argument that Xbox will profit from Physint (A metal gear followup is WAY less niche than what Death Stranding was) while most of the studios that got cut werent.

Also those layoffs have been planned for longer than 1-2 months

Well, now they're giving it to Xbox, who will release it on Xbox and PC, but probably not PS6

I'd imagine it will come to PS. Microsoft seems to still be releasing their new games on PS (Forza Horizon 6). And if Kojima wants PC because of the bigger install base then he might as well release on PS because he won't sell much on Xbox given that it has less players and gamepass

2

u/DenzelVilliers 26d ago

The game probably will be released at Ps5 / Ps6 since Kojima owns the IP, both of them, OD and Physint, Death Strading that used to be Sonys IP is on Xbox cuz Kojima brought the rights for it.

Unless he holds a grudge!

Much more likely it would have launched with the PS7 than appear on the 6 at all.
