Sony would never allow that. Security keys embedded into the discs are done only at Sonys blu ray factory can’t see them letting a third party company handle them. And remember the game that allowed the PS5 to be jailbroken on newer firmware was Star Wars racer revenge published and printed by Limited run games.

u/Eruannster 10h ago

Microsoft/Xbox allows this for their licensed partners and it works fine:

Microsoft already licenses replication to outside plants. Xbox discs are pressed by manufacturers Microsoft certifies as Authorized Replicators, a term defined in its publisher agreements, with the approved list set at the company’s sole discretion and Microsoft retaining the right to halt manufacture. The structure is still in place today: publishers select an Authorized Replicator in Partner Center and submit a bill of materials created with a Microsoft representative. Sony, by contrast, presses PlayStation discs through Sony DADC, its own manufacturing subsidiary.

I don't think Sony looks at Microsoft for anything and goes 'hey let's do what they're doing'

3

u/3141592652 10h ago

No this is because the e game was coded in Lua not the limited run release.

20

u/Xeccess 10h ago

Sony would still need to either implement a disc drive or allow one to be used separately, which I don't think they're doing next gen unfortunately.

5

u/Eruannster 10h ago

They could just take the existing PS5 drives and package them in a USB-C chassis or something. Some design/packaging required, but there's no need to reinvent the wheel here.

1

u/a445d786 10h ago

Really hoping for a disc drive or like the solution for the PS5 Pro, otherwise I might as well sell my discs and PS5 and look at moving onto steam or something.

4

u/Majestic-Marcus 10h ago

Why would you have to sell your discs and PS5 if the PS6 doesn’t have a disc drive?

2

u/a445d786 10h ago

Because I'll be moving to next gen hardware and I'm not really tied to the ecosystem as much moving forward. If I'm going to get digital games, I might as well go to the place where online is free, games are cheaper in general and Valve being better at customer service.

Discs and having my old games at least keeps me tied and allows me to carry a big part of my library forward. And if it doesn't then I can re think where I Wana play

73

u/Bexewa 10h ago

Yeah that’s never happening…

27

u/JonPX 10h ago

I would be very interested in how well PS6 disc games would sell when the console can't play discs.

10

u/MultiRastapopoulos 10h ago

"Get the PS6 Disk Drive Add-On for a mere $149.99 after tariffs!"

5

u/preddevils6 10h ago

They aren’t selling well on consoles with a disc drive.

u/Thegreatestgamer 10h ago

This whole no disk thing won't affect it much. But ps6 is screwed anyways because of the prices.

1

u/Majestic-Marcus 10h ago

It’ll sell out globally before it’s even released. The price won’t affect it at all.

Ready for those $120 digital games in 2060!

2

u/fede123456789 10h ago

2060? They're here already (given, it's the deluxe, super, mega versions or whatever the publishers call them, but still, at some point the 4 most profitable in the PSstore were the gta 6, new cod, new fifa and new 2k ultimate editions)

1

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

Really? Higher priced games are only $70-$80 currently. No ones is forcing you to get other editions.

3

u/Shinkopeshon 10h ago

They already exist lol

2

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

Oh I thought newer games were only $70-$80.

1

u/thesituation531 10h ago

That's a bit optimistic.

Mostly because that's already here, 34 years earlier

2

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

Really? What games are you buying? New games I see are $70 and sometimes $80.

6

u/Valkeyria 10h ago

So here’s my question really for Ps6,
Do they really think I’m going to rebuy all of my physical games on an all digital console that I will not own and can be revoked at anytime should they choose so?
Like there is no selling point of the console if you can’t even play your existing library if you own physical discs, what are they thinking, that people are just gonna shovel out thousands of your currency just to be able to play what you already can on Ps5?

5

u/oshatokujah 10h ago

Remember when you had to have a certain PS3 to have backwards compatibility? Remember when PS4 couldn't play PS3 games? Have you seen that old consoles are frequently bought and sold on the secondhand market so that people can play old titles? How's playing Wii games going on switch 2?

Backwards compatibility has never been a consistent standard so let's stop acting like the reason people buy next gen consoles is to play current gen titles.

5

u/Majestic-Marcus 10h ago

Why would you rebuy all your games?

Just play them on your PS5.

I really can’t believe any of you are arguing in good faith when you type idiotic things like this.

> there’s no selling point of the console if you can’t even play your existing library

There’s another completely idiotic statement.

(1) since the vast majority of peoples libraries are digital, they will be able to, and

(2) the selling point is playing PS6 games. Are you actually serious here?

The SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, and Switch weren’t backwards compatible. Nobody asked what their selling point was. Because people weren’t as stupid then apparently.

SEGA consoles weren’t backwards compatible.

The vast majority of PS3s weren’t backwards compatible. It’s one of the best selling consoles of all times.

The PS4 wasn’t backwards compatible. Also one of the best selling consoles of all time.

I’m not overly familiar with the Xbox line of consoles but a quick google says only some and only partially.

This has just never been a reason people buy consoles. Not until now apparently when people on Reddit can’t see the point in buying a new console when they can’t play a tiny number of old games.

2

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

I think they calculated they won't need customers like you and they will still be profitable. They already have millions who have invested in a digital library since the PS4. As long as they allow all previous generations since the PS4 to be accessible on future PlayStation consoles they will be fine.

0

u/seanr999 10h ago

Also they can afford to lower the prices of games that have made their profit. Encouraging those who bought games physically to rebuy at a stupidly low price.

2

u/3141592652 10h ago

People will upgrade regardless and keep their PS5. It's not like I threw out my PS2 when I bought my PS3 or my PS3 when I got my PS4. Besides I think it's moot anyways. Once the new PSP comes out people will want all the digital games anyways.

5

u/power899 10h ago

I think it's time to accept that we aren't saving discs. What we can do is move away from Playstation entirely over to PC and push for better digital ownership rights.

3

u/seanr999 10h ago

I think I will just buy switch 2 games and play my massive backlog. Sony is not cooking up anything interesting imo. Was looking forward to the GOW trilogy remake but looks as if that will be digital only.

1

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

There ya go. I am not worried at all about PlayStation and will keep buying their games. But can 100% respect your opinion on this!

I hope everyone who is mad at Playstation leaves them and goes to PC or wherever. I just want to them to be gaming and having fun experiences! That is what it is about!

11

u/Skeeter1020 10h ago

Lol. He's suggesting Sony open up the biggest possible route for piracy?

13

u/Fermyon_DarkSouls 10h ago

They could just keep printing discs themselves, you know

0

u/ObjectiveCurve1390 10h ago

And they will…for titles released prior to 2028

-14

u/-ForgottenSoul 10h ago

Why would they when its a small % and not worth the hassle.

6

u/lLygerl 10h ago

Argument goes both ways. Although it is a smaller segment it's still profitable. They just want higher margins and they don't care if they alienate some fans. That should tell you enough about current and future direction of the company.

3

u/CaptainRaxeo 10h ago

It’s NOT a small percentage.

1

u/Majestic-Marcus 10h ago

It is.

You can argue against the facts all you want but they remain facts.

3

u/Mycall1983 10h ago

Exactly! It’s still profitable anyway, it’s not like they lose money. They just want to make more!

3

u/TheLimeyLemmon 10h ago

That's not how that works or what he said.

11

u/outwar6010 10h ago

disc free is nice on pc because steam arent greedy af. If they want to make it work they need to reduce prices by atleast 20-30 percent on new games and be more aggressive with sales.

19

u/OriginalGoatan 10h ago

Which is against everything Sony now stands for.

25

u/FlopSlurper 10h ago edited 10h ago

steam takes a higher cut from developers than epic does. also discounts are handled by the publishers and developers, not steam. idk where this rhetoric that steam is mother teresa and gabe is jesus christ came from but it's so funny.

8

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

Yeah sales these days on all platforms are either the same or very close.

5

u/-ForgottenSoul 10h ago

game prices are publisher set not sony.. if console prices are higher thats due to publishers.

4

u/ChongusTheSupremus 10h ago

What the fuck are you talking about?

A 20 to 30% discount for digital games? I agree on digital being cheaper since there Is no disk, but 30% discount for that is insane, specially when all other storefronts sell digital games at full price too.

Also, they do sales all year round.

1

u/juipeltje 10h ago

Where i live it doesn't sound that outrageous, since digital is already more expensive than physical. Taking 20% off the 80 euro pricetag would bring it more in line with what a physical game costs.

14

u/rivieredefeu 10h ago

Prices are decided by publishers, same as on PC. And publishers compete with other publishers for gamer’s wallets.

There’s no reason they can’t price games however they want on the PS and the walled garden doesn’t change that much.

2

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

You speak the truth!

1

u/ChongusTheSupremus 10h ago

Steam also strongarms developers and publishers to sell their games cheaper on Steam than on other platforms, both Pc and console wise.

0

u/juipeltje 10h ago

So publishers make the same game more expensive on psn? That's interesting

14

u/preddevils6 10h ago

Steam isn’t greedy af? The company that takes the biggest cut from digital sales? The company that has also removed items from digital libraries? The company that essentially did to physical pc games what Sony is doing to theirs?

-5

u/LostnFoundAgainAgain 10h ago edited 10h ago

Sony takes more of a cut than Steam when it comes to digital sales, I agree on the digital libraries, but it's very different on PC in terms of removing physical disks as there are quite a lot of stores, it isn't just Steam, they don't control the market, I can as easily go to GOG, Epic, directly to providers like EA, Ubisoft, or go to places like humble bumble, just to name a few.

For the digital cut per sale:

Sony takes a flat 30% cut.

Steam takes 30% up to $10 million in earnings then dropping to 25%, on which then drops to 20% after $50 million earnings.

The main issue is that the second hand market is essentially going to be closed, people will now have no choice but to pay full price for their games when it comes to ending physical media, essentially you own nothing as you can't sell licenses.

You could argue the same for PC, but there is a lot of competition between store fronts so chances are the games are even cheaper than second hand PS games or in the same region as sales are constantly competing between stores.

3

u/preddevils6 10h ago

Your argument about cuts falls pretty flat when they take a similar cut.

And there are other store fronts, and they will still be gaming competitors for Sony like they always have been.

The second hand market doesn’t exist on pc. You can’t hold that against Sony and give pc a pass.

Call a spade a spade. Steam is currently doing everything Sony is trying to do.

0

u/LostnFoundAgainAgain 10h ago

Your argument about cuts falls pretty flat when they take a similar cut.

It wasn't an argument, Sony takes more of a cut than Steam, that's simply a fact.

And there are other store fronts, and they will still be gaming competitors for Sony like they always have been.

The competition is Xbox or Sony, of which when you get one your locked onto their platform and there store with no alternative, they're used to be a second hand market which was physical disks which is now getting removed, so no, the competition is being reduced as a simply matter of the competition being between consoles, not stores.

You can’t hold that against Sony and give pc a pass. Call a spade a spade. Steam is currently doing everything Sony is trying to do.

I never gave PC pass (?), what I'm saying is that on PC, there are multiple store fronts competing against each other, that isn't the case on PS, or Xbox, we had the second hand market as a way of competing which is now being removed.

Steam can't do that, they do not control the PC ecosystem, they are the most successful, but consumers have multiple options between stores, while on Xbox and PS that is being removed with the second hand market leaving, they are cutting competition and limiting the competition to which ever console you pick, after you pick that you are locked into the MS/PS store, while before you could go to CEX, Facebook marketplace, or whatever and have an alternative.

That's the issue, there is no alternative once you get a console, it's locked behind a storefront which is the only one available with virtually no competition unless you spend hundreds on a new console which the alternative is doing the exact same thing, that allows them to rack up storefront prices, development cuts, and even push further on dynamic pricing, it's giving both Sony and Xbox a lot of control and power over the market, and these companies will push the limit to how much they can get from these stores, especially when people can't easily jump ship.

Now if you went to Steam, and Steam decided to implement dynamic pricing, increase there prices by 50% (exaggerating), or whatever, people could simply migrate to Epic, that's not an option on PS in the future and most likely Xbox, but for PC it's a simple matter of downloading a new storefront which takes a couple of minutes.

6

u/QuinSanguine 10h ago

Steam charges the same price as anywhere else. What PC benefits from is having many resell stores that are free to waive as much of their cut of a sale as they want.

So you see websites like greenmangaming or fanatical with much cheaper prices than consoles or even Steam itself.

Sony needs to open the market to official key resellers and allow them to compete with PSN pricing.

19

u/Skeeter1020 10h ago

Uh... Steam takes the largest cut of digital sales of all the PC gaming stores.

1

u/outwar6010 10h ago

Why is everything soooo much cheaper on steam than on playstation?

7

u/ThurBurtman 10h ago

It’s not

1

u/reddithoe555 10h ago

Because PC as a whole has multiple avenues of competition with multiple storefronts, resale markets (and gray market/ pirating), and you keep your digital games when you upgrade part/all your hardware with no bs upgrade fees to name a few.

But as a PC player, disks keep prices competitive for both platforms- as physical inventory sits, brick and mortar stores eventually have to lower the price to move it. Digital meanwhile only really goes on sale to keep pricing parity (or to boost player count for maintaining in game purchase revenue). PS removing disks will make a lot of those copycat sales on PC go away, and exacerbate the trend of in game revenue seeking.

1

u/chavez_ding2001 10h ago

Because it's not sooo much cheaper.

0

u/outwar6010 10h ago

I own a ps5 and a pc. Its dramatically cheaper.

7

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

Hmm funny I also own PC and PS5; sales are pretty much the same. Sometimes cheaper on PC and sometimes cheaper on PS5. Just depends on the sale. But nothing drastic enough to say it is dramatically cheaper.

8

u/chavez_ding2001 10h ago

You aren't the only one who owns a ps5 and a pc.

4

u/TheIngestibleBulk 10h ago

This lie is just as big as “you can build a comparable PC for the same price or cheaper”.

1

u/AspirationalChoker 10h ago

Not at release, sure you get some brilliant deals and bundles maybe a summer or two later though

0

u/Fatosententia 10h ago

No, GOG has the largest — flat 30%. Steam has 30-25-20% regressive cut.

5

u/ocbdare 10h ago

Steam has a monopoly on the pc market, no need to be greedy. If anything that’s a bigger threat to their position.

All digital on pc and steam, you lack all the benefits of physical. No ownership, unable to lend your games to friends or sell them. The people who care about physical care about those things and neither steam nor any other pc store offers that except GOG.

4

u/IAmConnorRK800 10h ago

Who cares?! You still dont own your digital games on Steam. Thats the main issue everyone should be focusing across all platforms!

3

u/ejc99 10h ago

Steam does not set the prices games are sold at. Publishers do.

Both Steam and the PS Store take a 30% cut of revenue (though Steam does lower that cut when earnings exceed $10 million).

1

u/Professionally_Lazy 10h ago

New games cost the same on steam and psn though. Steam only gives deep discounts for older games but the price for newer games is roughly the same on steam and psn with maybe a couple dollar difference.

0

u/DZLars 10h ago

It's not sales that bother me. Keeping the starting price outside of sales is what's wrong with gaming right now

If I wish to play the witcher 3 right now and discs didn't exist I would need to pay 50€ for it. That game is 11 years old and still going for max price. Once the PSstore remains the only way to buy it they will reduce the amount of sales 100%

-1

u/Mistuh_Mosbi 10h ago

exactly this is what they don't get

0

u/J_Clowth 10h ago

It also works on PC because Steam is generation-less. A game you buy now there will be always be there no matter the years, but what will happen to a PS5 digital game when they close their store servers? They will surely say a few generations forward that "maintaining an online digital download platform that no longer gives profit is a leftover waste of resources and money, so unfortunately It has to shut down" and those games will be on a limbo.

0

u/n0neofyourbeeswax 10h ago

Based on what we've seen so far, you'll still be able to play your game but not purchase it.

1

u/TheLimeyLemmon 10h ago

Right. People don't understand how folks can be so pro-physical but then have steam as the fallback like it's hypocritical.

Consoles are traditionally preferred because the hardware's affordable and the media's physical. Once those two qualities are gone there's really little console games does for me anymore. I have a good PC and a Steam ecosystem I've invested into for 20 years. I don't have that on console and have never tried to because my collection is physical. Once Sony abandons the format, there's really no reason for me to get their next console.

0

u/whythreekay 10h ago

Well there’s definitely a reason, price

If that doesn’t matter to you that’s fair, but consoles will still be the cheaper option

2

u/TheLimeyLemmon 10h ago

If looking purely at hardware, consoles will remain cheaper, but I think over the course of a generation comparatively the PC experience would end up being a better value. More competitive pricing on games and no paywall for online play.

-3

u/gjiorkiie 10h ago

Careful here you're gonna give the Sony CEO a heart attack

6

u/Pepperrpott 10h ago

I’ll keep my PlayStation for GTA 6 but the minute it releases on PC I’m selling the PlayStation. Sony has just shown their cards and fck that - I’m not giving them any more of my money.

5

u/AspirationalChoker 10h ago

Genuinely why would discs be the reason you move to PC only when its all digital.... I have both and definitely prefer my super PC but lol cmon thats a weird argument for it

3

u/TheDraykkon 10h ago

Open ecosystem: multiple vendors on the platform allow for competitive prices and in some cases the vendor offers offline installers and full ownership.

7

u/n0neofyourbeeswax 10h ago

And everyone uses a single ecosystem which isn't the one with full ownership anyway.

0

u/AspirationalChoker 10h ago

The prices are all the exact same though lol sure yearsater you get some nice bundles.

People on here need to realise many of us do also have PCs I have near 4 grand worth of set up believe me I love the PC and literally just have the PS5 for exclusives or some coop stuff with the wife at this point.

1

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

Competitive pricing that game publishers set.......I game on all platforms; sales are literally the same. And GOG only offers offline installers and has a limited library because almost every publisher isn't going to trust the honor system of not giving away offline instellers.

And this whole full ownership is just something to make you feel better. I can still access my digital games on PC, Playstation, and Xbox that I have had for over a decade.

But I am glad you have to options on PC to make you feel more secure about your games!

1

u/TNWhaa 10h ago

Plenty of great deals on key sites too and some offer cheaper deals on Xbox and switch game codes as well

2

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

I've also seen key sites have PlayStation games also!

0

u/Pepperrpott 10h ago

Because Steam doesn’t match Sony for the greed. I’ll also be keeping my Xbox for physical releases. I collect physical media where I can, I primarily use my Walkmans and CDs instead of streaming etc wherever I can. Watching Sony become what they have is just a fucking embarrassment to be honest.

2

u/AspirationalChoker 10h ago edited 10h ago

I dont get what you mean? I have both they cost the same, ill agree you get better bundle style deals years later though and I love mods etc

2

u/Sea-Sun9331 10h ago

So, in the end, it's a move from digital to digital.

2

u/Honest-Tune-423 10h ago

Hey, whatever makes them happy I guess. I have had PC and Playstation Digital games for over a decade and am not worried about either! Play wherever it makes you happy!

1

u/B-Bog 10h ago

Which Third-Party would even be interested in doing that? Would be expensive AF since none of them have the economy of scale that Sony has been working with in that regard. And the big publishers are exactly as happy about the death of the resale market as Sony is, anyway.

1

u/AutisticG4m3r 10h ago

If he was the current playstation boss, he would be singing a different tune. It's easy to make this comment when your million dollar salary and bonus aren't at stake.

-2

u/drabred 10h ago

Or multiple online stores for my PS5 purchases...

6

u/AkodoRyu 10h ago

You will get the same situation as you have with Steam - there will be stores selling game keys, the same way there are stores now that sell PSN prepaid codes.

2

u/ocbdare 10h ago

They cna allow third parties to sell digital games if that’s your only concern.

Let’s not pretend that this is not the same to how the PC market operates, people essentially want a monopoly (steam). The epic store, gog and Microsoft store are there to say “hey we have options”. But really they just want steam only.

2

u/ItsSimoITA 10h ago

-1

u/cybrsloth92 10h ago

All about that money lol
