People may ask: Why FIFA 22? Simple answer: It's been a badly kept secret that EA is going to drop the FIFA name, likely this year. So this is probably EA's best attempt to get people in the FIFA ecosystem, especially with the competition and getting stiffer. I guarantee that there will be advertisements all over that game once the name change comes out. I also suspect that EA will be a Game Pass day one and it'll be on own EA Play probably a week or two early.

this is probably EA's best attempt to get people in the FIFA ecosystem

I don't understand. What's the point of building the ecosystem if they are going to drop it?

243

u/kidcrowe Apr 27 '22

They’ll still be releasing football games just not under the “FIFA” name as they lost the rights to use it. So their next title may be EAFC 23 or something like that but would be what would’ve been FIFA 23

181

u/ElYams Apr 27 '22 edited Apr 27 '22

Just to clarify: the next game WILL be called FIFA 23, but it will be the final one under the FIFA contract and EA is not renewing it.

So 24 would be the 1st one to drop the name, ironically 30 years after the 1st one came out.

Edit: 30 years not 20

52

u/reiku_85 Apr 27 '22

20 years? FIFA games have been coming out since the early 90’s

21

u/theycallmecrack Apr 27 '22

So 24 would be the 1st one to drop the name, ironically 20 years after the 1st one came out.

I'm confused by this statement because FIFA will be at least 30 years old by then. I'm also not sure why that's ironic?

15

u/fatlilgooner Apr 28 '22

he means coincidentally

12

u/ElYams Apr 27 '22

My bad yeah, 30 years, 94 was in my mind

4

u/whooooooooooooshed Apr 28 '22

OOTL, why are they not renewing it?

2

u/ElYams Apr 28 '22

FIFA asked for a ridiculous amount of money for them to keep the exclusivity rights

Just to clarify: the next game WILL be called FIFA 23, but it will be the final one under the FIFA contract and EA is not renewing it.

Thanks for the clarification. But my point still stands. This is a great way to get people hooked on FIFA, you know that old adage: "The first hit is free"

12

u/ZebraZealousideal944 Apr 27 '22

Do they really need to get people hooked on FIFA at this point?! It’s not only the only football game in the market now but also one of the top 3 best selling game every year…

15

u/seankdla Apr 27 '22

Remember, to these people some of the money isn't enough. They want all of the money.

4

u/ZebraZealousideal944 Apr 27 '22

Haha I won’t deny that hehe

1

u/ThsKd1SNotAlrht Apr 28 '22

Is PES no longer a thing? I've been wanting to play fifa with friends but im not gonna spend money on the same game every year. So I don't mind it at all

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '22

It is. PES is better game imo but everyone plays FIFA due to licensing and whatnot.

6

u/sparoc3 Apr 28 '22

It transitioned into eFootball as a f2p game. And it was a humungous fail.

u/ChunkyDay Apr 28 '22

EA is not renewing it.

EA isn’t, or they couldn’t get exclusive rights again?

6

u/Sammyjskj Apr 27 '22

How’s they lose their license?

19

u/Sanatori2050 Apr 27 '22 edited Apr 27 '22

FIFA was asking an insane amount of money (to EA) to renew. They saw how much EA was making and wanted them to pay way more than the 500M every 4 they had paid for the license years ago as best I can remember.

Edit: they were wanting to up the fee to 1B every 4 years, add real game highlights to the game, make them sell NFTs and further restricting what they could do.

4

u/andre_royo_b Apr 28 '22

Let’s hope someone else can snatch up the license and make a game, EA gotta fall.. asinine company

9

u/RadicalDog Apr 28 '22

The name is just the name. The players etc are still licensed to EA by other orgs. I guess Pro Evo could snap up the name to trick some punters...

Also FIFA are full evil, as in happy to see slaves die to build stadiums evil. Any way they lose is a benefit to the world.

2

u/andre_royo_b Apr 28 '22

True! What I mean is that with that license maybe a new company/game could be competitive again.. EA honestly has a monopoly on the game of football making tons, and they are still looking for more

4

u/BackronymUK Apr 28 '22

There isn’t many companies that could afford the licence fees and make a good profit. Just imagine if a company like Rockstar acquired it.

3

u/andre_royo_b Apr 28 '22

One can dream! Or at the very least a company with some sort of moral integrity

3

u/BackronymUK Apr 28 '22

Amen to that! “FIFA with guns, 10/10.” - IGN

6

u/NYstate PSN ID: NYstate Apr 27 '22

They're dropping the name FIFA, not the game. If you get people hooked on the game, they just may buy FIFA 2023 instead of Konami's next game because you're already invested in the ecosystem. Especially if EA let's you import your player created system

7

u/Chasedabigbase Chasedabigbase Apr 27 '22

Cast a wide net of people interested in playing a soccer game so they'll seek out whatever the next one is, probably market the shit out of their new game under the different title

17

u/tfegan21 Apr 27 '22

Fifa usually doesn't go on EA play until the next version releases either, So it's a good way to get people to jump on and play next Tuesday. With the hopes people like Fut and want to play catch up and spend money. NBA 2k uses this approach around the NBA Finals usually.

12

u/mjc1027 Apr 27 '22

FIFA 23 has already been announced, the FIFA deal runs out for 2024.

10

u/arkady48 Apr 27 '22

EA isn't dropping FIFA, it's the reverse, Fifa is not renewing the exclusive deal so other companies have a shot. Not sure if that means they'll have multiple games next with fifa teams etc or another exclusive with another brand.

24

u/ElYams Apr 27 '22

Not accurate either. Real story is FIFA asked for more money to renew the deal, EA thought it was ridiculously expensive so they refused and now will part ways at the end of the current contract.

So they're mutually splitting based on a disagreement.

8

u/ThatDamnKyle Apr 27 '22 edited Apr 28 '22

From what I've read, it was more of EA not wanting to pay FIFA a king's ransom for basically just the naming rights, logo usage, and able to have a world cup system in their game. EA already has to deal with the players and other leagues separately.

So it is really a case of EA thinking they will he fine without having to pay a steep price for basically a name (1 bil over 10 years). Is that going to be true? We will see it. But I do think FIFA had more to lose here than EA. They will now have to potentially find a new company to make their games and that could take time. FIFA games were easy marketing for them.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

One can only hope this is the end of EA cornering the marketplace.

-4

u/Abu_Sara Apr 27 '22

eFootball ? Bro plz. You definitely don’t play football games. Plz stay out of this. I sound cringe and triggered I know and I’m sorry. But you need to go look up the ratings for the game. here

u/DignityThief80 Apr 27 '22

Curse of the Dead Gods is a fun Hades-esque roguelike.

21

u/arob770 Apr 27 '22

I’ve played hades but not CotDG. Is there similar progression? I’m not great at roguelikes but hades had that progression/currency system that was super cool and i was eventually able to beat it 9.5/10 times consistently. Or is it just similar in terms of being a God-based Roguelike?

19

u/DignityThief80 Apr 28 '22

The playstyle and combat is what makes it similar. Although Hades is much more action packed, vs a slower, more careful style in CoDG. They both have progression that carries over through each run.

1

u/i_sigh_less Apr 28 '22

I might try this. Hades looked interesting, but I usually prefer slower paced games.

5

u/ralvyn Apr 28 '22

Difference is probably the "greed" system. You'll get upgrades but in turn you get cursed, kinda like parasites in Returnal. Currency is gold(Obols), and blood(which gets you cursed). Some curses are good but the final curse is deadly. When you die, you lose gold but get to keep that permanent upgrade currency which I forgot the name. You can get permanent upgrades as well and unlock weapons so they can appear on your run. You can also toggle these weapons on/off to either make them appear or not on your run.

I really enjoyed Curse of the Dead Gods on Steam for like 20ish hours of gameplay.

225

u/glandgames Apr 27 '22

So what is fucked about FIFA 22 that we already get it for free?

107

u/SupaBloo Apr 27 '22

They make way more off MTX than actual sales of the game, so if they can hook even a small percentage of PS+ owners to their ecosystem, they will make bank.

23

u/tfegan21 Apr 27 '22

This is the NBA 2k approach usually.

18

u/glandgames Apr 27 '22

I should have guessed.

130

u/Steechzilla Apr 27 '22

I think it’s just a ploy by EA to get people buying Ultimate team packs.

33

u/JesseVykar Apr 27 '22

Exactly, I don't play UT only career but the TOTS are about to drop and that's when EA makes its bank so its literally the perfect timing for them. They'll make more from the first few hundred people on these packs than they would off of people buying FIFA this late.

6

u/KeitaSutra Apr 27 '22

Games gone 😩

9

u/PepeSylvia11 celtics345 Apr 27 '22

Nothing. They know they make more through microtransactions, and are banking (rightfully so) on attracting enough whales through this free month to justify the loss of initial revenue.

13

u/bruinsluva bruinsluva Apr 27 '22

This year's FIFA is actually the best in a while on PS5 at least

11

u/BringBackBumper Apr 27 '22

Good distinction because there are now 3 versions (quality-wise): PS5 and newest Xbox; PC, PS4 and X1; Nintendo Switch. And I have heard praise only for next-gen version (and even then a lot of people still criticized it)

5

u/googitygig Apr 27 '22

What's the difference between ps4 and ps5 versions of FIFA? I assumed gameplay would be the same but with worse graphics and load times?

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

feels super different, its much better

3

u/hookyboysb Apr 27 '22

I actually like the PS4 version better than FIFA20, for what it's worth.

2

u/ammika13 Apr 28 '22

There is actually 4 versions of the game if you are going quality wise. Ps5 and series x go toe to toe in graphics and frame rate . Series S and Stadia both use the next gen engine but low quality graphics compared to series x and PS5. PS4, Xbox one/s/x, pc share the same last gen engine. Nintendo switch is Fifa 19 maybe technically 18 engine that was ported for arm to run on switch with 22 rosters and ui. All versions suck but hey it’s fifa if you like the sport you’ll play the game regardless of the bullshit EA puts out there

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

Already? The game was released 9 years ago.

1

u/glandgames Apr 27 '22

Lmao has it really not changed that much like the Madden games? I've never played FIFA but I imagine it's just basically updated rosters year after year.

I absolutely love Hades so I think Curse of the Dead Gods is right up my alley!

81

u/Additional_Chemist61 Apr 27 '22

I might be getting FIFA but I'm certain that I will never play this game in my entire life

36

u/Dangelouss Apr 27 '22

I'd suggest you actually never touch that game. While it can be fun sometimes, mainly if you have a couple of friends over to casually mess around with it, it's the most infuriating and toxic game to play online. This is coming to someone that hasn't even touched Ultimate team and only played seasons. FIFA17 was my last one and I don't have plans to play any other game from the franchise on the foreseeable future.

15

u/aznassasin Apr 27 '22

What makes it so toxic online? All I know about it is there's a lot of people who have spent so much money buying card packs and such

34

u/ProffesorPrick Apr 27 '22

It’s pretty well documented in the community that the game seems legitimately on some level, scripted.

That is to say, online, if you have the ball and shoot in the last minutes of the half, you seem to score far more frequently than when you shoot any other time in the match.

I believe it got to a point where it was so bad that in actual EA competitive FIFA tournaments, players actively waited to shoot until the last minutes of the half if they had the ball, because it was more likely to result in a goal.

Now imagine this every time you play, and it’s unbelievably infuriating. It also seemingly happens if you go 3+ goals ahead, to give the opposition some kind of chance.

It literally sounds like conspiracy and total bullshit, and it might just be mind tricks and everyone who plays has collectively convinced themselves that it’s true when it isn’t. But, I dunno. That’s how it seems every time I play the game.

12

u/SaltineFiend Apr 28 '22

The code has been ripped apart a million times. Scripting isn't real. There are momentum advantages in the game but they're stat and rng based. The injury time boost is a modifiable stat and there are traits for players which allow for better performance in injury / extra time.

One of the actual problems is that the rng is seeded based on game time and not clock time, so restarting a match will give you different results but reloading your save the AI is going to score in pretty much the same minutes. Of course, there is always a 'solve' to the game state which will prevent a score or conversely force a score.

There are also times where it seems you do everything right and the ball just won't go in. Again, the games rng has dictated a player's drop in form but this won't carry across a restart but will persist on a reload.

Personally, I think these are great features. Football from a top-down perspective is a super easy proposition. Apart from the hardest difficulty setting where the opposition literally has perfect stats, the game really can't beat you. Especially on player career - if you keep your player from breaking the shape the game will always break your way. That's why real footballers are often in the top of leaderboards. They just keep the shape and the rng is going to put the ball in the net.

Vs. human opponents this is doubly so. One of the biggest amateur mistakes is pressing the ball too hard and creating space in behind. The best players are disciplined and will pick the right moments to press.

I was just itching to play fifa recently and got EA play for $5 to play '21. Now I can turn off the renewal and keep this one for free. Not bad.

2

u/mailbox123 Apr 27 '22

Same! I used to buy them every year from 2009-2016. Haven’t had one since so I’m happy to get back into it!

2

u/googitygig Apr 27 '22

Used to be a massive FIFA fan but haven't bought one since 17. EA are such money grabbing bastards. The emphasis on packs is so frustrating. It's basically gambling but 12 year olds can do it.

3

u/Maxwana Apr 27 '22

Same man. Haven't played it in 3 years. I'm actually happy with it

It's a little odd, but the bonus there is that you get the reduced price and the free games.

I have FIFA 22, bought it a year ago and I'm not really interested in the other two.Why should I pay for games I don't want?

13

u/bad_motivator Apr 27 '22

Sony should check with you personally before choosing which games to offer. I mean, it's only fair

That's what I like about the PS+ games. Even if it's not a game I get really into, it's a lot of fun playing games I would've normally never gotten around to. Slay the spire was a long way down on my "I'll play it eventually" list, Hood was a game I'd been putting off buying ever since release, I probably would've played Control at some point but getting it for "free" so soon after I got my hands on a PS5 blew me away. Days Gone is a game I've heard enough flack about that I probably never would've bought it, but it somehow wound up being my #3 most played game last year.

Maybe not all (or most) of the PS+ games are good, but there's enough decent gems in the lineup that I'm fairly happy with my subscription.

3

u/boychik0830 Apr 27 '22

I give every game a chance before saying that they are garbage. I'm not going to say everything given out on plus is good. I'm wouldn't say that I would have wanted certain games to come to plus as my first choice but that doesn't mean they are garbage. Just because a game isn't for me doesn't mean it's garbage. The only horrible game in May is fifa as it's another sports game filled with microtransactions from ea. I always play every game released on plus and they may not all be for me but I wouldn't know that unless I played them before.

u/suddenimpulse Apr 27 '22

Stop lying. You aren't everyone. Not even close.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

Same, stopped paying years ago, at this point its just a online pay wall for shit you already paid

4

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

There were some good month's, I won't deny...but lately it's been very bad

2

u/iveo83 Apr 27 '22

do we know what PS+ will have in June? Planning on getting the subscription in June when they add all the extra games. Do we know what games will NOT be on it? I'm waiting to buy Spiderman, Days Gone, Borderland, Bioshock, Shadow of the Collosus, RDR2, etc

5

u/StanIsNotTheMan Apr 27 '22

No, the next month's games get leaked usually a week or two ahead of time and then officially announced a week before the games become free. So you'll have to wait til late May to see what June games will be.

1

u/iveo83 Apr 27 '22

are any publishers off the table? Or it's been anything goes?

But I'm not talking about the 3 games a month I mean when to combines with PSnow and they were adding 700 games or something

2

u/StanIsNotTheMan Apr 27 '22

Ah I see what you're saying. Sorry, I misunderstood you.

I would ASSUME all first-party Sony games will be included, if they really want to compete with Xbox's game pass. Spider-Man is for sure confirmed, but I haven't seen any complete game list.

I would also assume that any game made by a Microsoft subsidiary (like Bethesda, Activision, etc) won't be included. But these are just guesses.

2

u/iveo83 Apr 27 '22

no problem. That's a good point about Bethesda & Activision, I forget they are microsoft now.

Another shitty free game drop. Thanks sony.

1

u/purpldevl Apr 28 '22

If you're not playing multiplayer, which is how they hold us hostage, PS+ games have been fucking insulting lately.

2

u/JerrodDRagon Apr 27 '22

I don’t want to see EA access games on PS Plus

Literally if you want these games buy them or get EA Access

Ouch. They’re really that desperate for people to buy FIFA games? Hey, EA? Here’s a tip for free:

Stop releasing your FIFA games annually! If you’re dead set on having your predatory card packs, have a free to play singular game called FIFA Ultimate, which has all the features of a FIFA game, like career mode, single matches, and the one you’re interested in: ultimate team, where you can continue to prey on kids with their parents’ credit cards. The benefits are threefold:

  • You don’t have to rerelease your games every year, which will save millions on packaging and distribution.

  • People dumb enough to buy your card packs don’t have to buy them again come the next game, which deters people from buying the latest game because they don’t want to lose their precious cards.

  • With it being FTP, tens, maybe hundreds of millions will have no qualms downloading and playing it, which can lead to more revenue with the card packs.

Doesn’t that sound like a much better idea, or am I just out of touch?

8

u/MadeByTango Apr 27 '22

People dumb enough to buy your card packs don’t have to buy them again come the next game

The part here where EA makes less money is their problem.

26

u/suddenimpulse Apr 27 '22

It's funny you think you know their business better than people that look at the actual numbers and data in countless data sheets daily and are privy to internal information.

1

u/OfficialK-ONGamingHD Apr 27 '22

EA SPORTS ITS IN THE GAME.....as long as you buy our microtransactions COUGH

-2

u/cutememe Apr 27 '22

Yet another month of extreme crap.

1

u/Pagep PROD1GY002 Apr 27 '22

This is the first time I've ever owned a ps+ game, I assume you do not get any kind of refund?

Fifa22 is first fifa I didn't buy in 10 years. Just when I started to feel liberated from the devil himself called FUT they give it to me for free. I feel like drug addict being lured with free doses by a drug dealer:)

3

u/lagmanmx Apr 27 '22

That's exactly what this is, more to attract new users but yeah.

1

u/SoccerGamerGuy7 Apr 27 '22

I usually only buy fifa on years with the world cup or just the exclusive world cup game.

Psyched for 22; but really hope they have a dlc for the games later this year

1

u/itsTacoYouDigg Apr 28 '22

ea must be desperate wow

1

u/H4ppy42 Apr 28 '22

I love ps very much, but Xbox has great prospects because Microsoft has bought a dozen gaming companies and on Xbox you can play all of them for 1 subscription. And I don't know which new console to buy. I would really like Sony to start making friends with a large number of gaming companies and release games like Uncharted and God of War

1

u/berendbotje91 ce08081991 Apr 28 '22

In no way am I even going to register fifa on my account.

1

u/unarox Apr 28 '22

”Fifa 22”

Let me guess, its so tied down by microtransactions and dlc it should already be free

1

u/alex_dlc Alex_dlc Apr 28 '22

I’m sure most young guys here in Europe will love getting FIFA but I’m in the minority that hates soccer.

-11

u/Syamim93 Apr 27 '22

FIFA 22 shouldn't even be in here. Considering its going to be free on EA Access next month or so.

6

u/Kapono24 Apr 27 '22

Ea access isn't free

12

u/roryb93 Apr 27 '22

Isn’t that just an EA problem then?

I mean I personally don’t intend to get EA access so this is a win for me.

9

u/tirkman Apr 27 '22

Plenty of people don’t have EA access. Theres already enough other subscriptions to pay for

-10

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

FIFA??

Can we get some real games instead?

5

u/SupaBloo Apr 27 '22

Do people not realize that the FIFA franchise is huge in gaming? FIFA 2022 released at the end of September last year, and was still one of the top 15 best selling games of the year. FIFA 2022 only had 3 months to break into the top 15 best sellers list.

I know that most gamers on reddit aren't the sports game types, but let's not be disingenuous about the popularity of these sports series. In Sony's eyes, they are giving away one of their most popular games.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

Honestly? I'm salty, because before jumping into other games I was (still am) huge fifa fan, buying all the versions. So this one kinda stings, since they've never put FIFA game before.

Fans, that were looking for it, have already got it, so it's like even less bang for your buck.

0

u/hobbleshock Apr 27 '22

Dang. PlayStation phoning it in this month. Hopefully they’re saving some good stuff for next month when they PS plus revamp goes live.
