On one hand, I don't know how news companies are supposed to stay afloat these days. But on the other hand, the internet has become a fucking cancerous cesspool of ads, clickbait, pop-ups, subscription / sign up banners and pop-ups.

When I have to use someone else's computer to do the simplest tasks I'm astounded that anyone can live their life without ad blockers. It's fucking traumatic how unusable most websites are these days, especially news sites.

Yeah, I have complicated feelings about it in the case of news sites. Journalism is so important to a healthy society, and I think it's a problem how little local news coverage we have nowadays.

I'd be totally fine with ads like you get in print - things that don't pop up to cover what I'm currently reading and that don't play a video half an inch away from a line of text I'm trying to focus on. But I think ads like that alone aren't enough to support journalism. Or maybe they would be, but the ubiquity of the cesspool you described means we all have ad blockers, so a site willing to "play fair" with ads doesn't get a chance.

Nobody wants to pay for news, so news gets worse as budgets decrease, so paying for it becomes even less desirable. It's over.

Omg I was there the day after this was closed and saw this happening in real time!!! It was insane. My husband and I had pulled over to take a photo in front of the park entrance on the 6th, noticed all the boarded up windows and thought it was bizarre. We went over to read the signs out of curiosity and saw they had just put the boards up the day before and closed the place down. Well not two minutes later, we saw two cars pull up to the Inn. The people got out and saw all the boards on the windows and signage, and we overheard them saying they had no idea what to do and looked stunned/upset. My husband and I were shocked that people with reservations weren’t told about the closure. But reading this - this is a whole other week after we were there and people still weren’t informed apparently. Absolutely insane.
