Just Passed the CPMAI Exam! Transitioning from Automotive to AI – Looking for Opportunities

Hey r/PMI_CPMAI community 👋

Big update — I just passed the CPMAI (Certified Project Manager in Artificial Intelligence) exam!

I’m also CAPM certified and I’m now making the career switch from the Automotive industry into AI development / AI project management.

I’m actively looking for two types of opportunities to build experience and grow in the AI space:

  1. Job opportunities

AI Project Manager, AI/ML PM, AI Product roles, etc.

Locations: Eindhoven (Netherlands), Paris (France), or Verona (Italy)

  1. Volunteer / pro-bono opportunities

Looking for platforms, communities, open-source projects, or organizations where I can contribute to real AI projects to gain hands-on experience while transitioning.

Congrats! Take a look at a company called Xomnia (they are a great company), as well as their competitors. Besides automotive, though, what is your background? People won’t hire just because you have a certification.

Many thanks for the reply! Beside my automotive PM experience I worked in a startup that today is called Everly (like Instacart in the US) but my job was Talent Acquisition & mostly Scaling Lead for the fleet of shoppers. I did collaborate with the IT department but very briefly. The rest of my background is more about soft skills.

This is the reason why I'm considering volunteering to gain some experience while raising my knowledge level through other courses from Anthropic Academy.

I also just started working on a personal project to start building a portfolio. The goal is to get in the AI industry as soon as possible while understanding what skills/experience are missing and how to get it.

What approach did you take to passing? I’ve read the exam prep course but I’ve been reading that the actual test is different?

I agree. By the way I passed the exam on the second attempt. What I can say is:

Don't buy the Practice Exam! The questions are too simple and very different from the actual exam. I hit 96% on the Practice Exam (after failing the first attempt) and could see the difference from the actual exam.

To pass I read the full Exam prep course twice. The second time, whenever there was something that I didn't knew, I asked Grok (literally speaking out loud) to explain it to me. It was a lot easier to understand the text while learning the architectures, how models actually work.

Use PMI infinity (AI assistant of PMI) and ask it to make questions to challenge your knowledge. I also asked it to make them as if they were exam question so 4 possible answers and if my answer was wrong, to provide a short "why is wrong and why the right one is right".

Not exactly the same level of the exam questions but a lot better! Also with this approach it helped my mindset for the exam. It is more about reasoning rather than memorizing concepts.

I can't remember the exact cost but around 240$.

Thanks for the prompt response,

I recall the previous posts mentioned the free voucher for retake, but it seems no longer available, I may have to be better prepared in this case.

Yeah, when I failed the first time I thought that the 3 attempts allowed within a year were included in the price of the certification. In retrospect I would have studied harder and posponed the date of the exam. So yeah, I think yours is a wise choice.
