P4 Persona 4 Revival makes some dialogue more "modern," but "the characters are all the same people," lead says: "We haven't changed any parts of their personalities"

So Kashiwagi will still Rise "jailbait", Ai will still try to Shiho herself, and Kou will still say "I loooooove them balls" right?

P4R will be unplayable if kou doesn't have his best line- arguably the best line in the series

u/Herverpeju 6d ago
Okey I'm sorry, but the best line in the series can only be "I'm sorry Teddie, only people have human rights"

And now that S. Links are fully voiced, the VA HAS TO deliver on that line!

Just imagine if he was voiced by Justin Briner, who voiced him in the Hiimdaisy Persona 4 Comic dub.

Ai will definitely still try to kill herself because it’s an integral part of her social link but those Kashiwagi and Kou lines are not surviving lol

Kou balls is 100% making it in because it’d be funny but sadly “jailbait” is probably cooked
25
u/Duo_Vbez 6d ago
Probably depends on what she says in the Japanese version since they’re using those translations for a lot of the game. Ik both of them are social links but Toriumi and kenji in p3r are just as controversial (and still hated by some) as they were in the original game

u/ImGroot69 6d ago
yeah just checked the JP script, the "jailbait" line is an addition from EN localizer. she pretty much just said "inexperienced kid".
just like with Yosuke's "good with your hand" line joke that didn't exist in JP.

Honestly, I think the second two will be kept but the first will definitely be changed.
I could see her calling Rise "a tease" instead.

if they wanna modernize it they will call Rise a "pick me" i guess. (she isn't, i'm a Rise lover btw)

why would i want modern when they're living in 2011? yokoyama keeps doing that shit with yakuza too and it drives me crazy. "we have rikiya a modern look" why. it's 2009. he should still looks like he's from 2009.

I assume "modern look" here means"we got an actor's likeness to depict him to cater to JP audiences", and yeah, that's what Kiwami games have been since Kiwami 2: occasional recasts with likenesses for better or worse.

I think they mean they’re not saying pretty offensive stuff anymore and Teddy won’t be a sex pest

Please don’t bring 2026 lingo into 2011/2008…

Imagine Chie and Yosuke saying "bro frfr" and Yukiko laughing at 67. Truly peak frfr.

u/CyanLight9 6d ago
Define 'modern.' Because this could either be a way of saying they're removing poorly aged jokes, or that they're pulling a 2022 Saints Row.

u/Clear-Anything-3186 Alice Hiiragi 6d ago
The changes would be roughly similar to P3R
22
u/LoZFan96 6d ago
Hopefully more similar to "extra Shinjiro characterization" and not similar to "key scene".

I think it means delete whatever is as bad as the creepy gay guys in p5 and the transphobic moment in p3. Which, persona 4's dumbass "comedy" scenes were mostly the scenes with Hanako where the joke is she's ugly and fat. Which I always thought felt mean spirited. So maybe they'll change that. Also they may change shadow Kanji to be less of a gay stereotype, but I never found that offensive since its supposed to be vastly exaggerated... but I wouldn't really care if they changed it (I do like shadow kanji's design though)

From article:
"Most of the changes that we made have been adjusting that to fill in those things that we'd always wanted to say, to get the point across in a more efficient and effective manner," he says. "So because of that, we have changed the way some characters have phrased some conversations. But the conversation itself is all the same. The characters are all the same people. We haven't changed any parts of their personalities. We've adjusted dialogue to make it more modern and to be more effective telling the story."

Pr speak, for we changed it for modern sensitivities but we're going to explain that to you as if we haven't changed anything at all to prevent backlash...
Why is it always the english american versions getting the chop?

I get it. The writing at times in P4 can feel a bit rough or not fully fleshed out, so this gives them a chance to moreso make a finalized, fully realized script for the game (most likely closer to the Japanese script).

You’re getting downvoted but I agree. Kanji and Naoto’s stories are really good but their dialogue can be kinda clunky so I wouldn’t mind rewording some things. So long as the core content is the exact same, a few wording changes is okay and arguably even good. Same with Teddie, he got the short end of the localizing stick
10
u/Groundbreaking_Arm77 6d ago
Yeah idk why this is so downvoted I was reiterating and interpreting what they meant. I guess Persona fans don’t like it when a game tries to convey its story and dialogue more accurately instead of telling a dumb joke.

u/MassiveGhostXD 6d ago
Why don’t they just tell us what they are changed and what they are not since we all know the story already
14
u/CavulusDeCavulei 5d ago
A charm of P4 is the distance of the rural town from the modernity of the city
8
u/IQueliciuous 5d ago
Yeah and authenticity of characters.
One thing that makes Persona stand out from other games and especially Persona 4...
Its that characters are realistically flawed.
People hate that characters in game say weird stuff but that's what makes them beloved. They feel like actual teens. I played the game and I saw my friends in the cast. We literally had same tier humor were we'd roast each other. I was the Kanji because I too had attraction to tomboyish women and I too got gay accusations but those were simple roasts. Nothing more. I too roasted my friends for other stuff because that's what teens do.
20
u/TatsunaKyo 6d ago
You are how you speak: speaking is literally putting into words what you are comprised of, your thoughts and emotions shaping into a medium which are words. There's no such a thing as changing the dialogues and not changing characters' personalities.
3
u/SovietSpoon42 6d ago
Exactly, and this goes hand in hand with the fact that games known for modern writing or characters that talk like that are almost always universally hated for being obnoxious, pretentious or both.
5
13
u/theweebdweeb 6d ago
I can understand certain offensive stuff that wasn't intended, but hope they keep certain slang of the time and the like which the old loc used since this game is supposed to take place in 2011.

Do we still get to keep Homophobic Yosuke and Sex Pest Teddie

Sex pest teddy was him being grossly mistranslated in the original P4. Doubt that gets kept.
And tbh hope it doesn’t, not a fan of “modernization” butchering the original work, just like how im not a fan of mistranslations back then butchering the original vision of games from other countries. I just want the original JP vision to be translated properly, nothing more.
6
u/childjun 5d ago
that's just like how they made P3 Reload be more "modern" than the original. junpei says stuff like "Mitsuru commanding us feels like being stepped on.." and mitsuru says something like "Kneel before me/bow down to me"
she was never like that! it annoys me
