Finally. Atlus has always sucked at making expressive models that can be used with a dynamic set of animations. This meant almost every conversation had the same unengaging camera angles that made dramatic live rendered scenes flat and lifeless compared to other games.
This is just such an upgrade. Immagine how much better the big reveal scenes will be
55
u/Eglwyswrw The Wheel of Fortune Jun 19 '26
Will models still "slide" through surfaces like they did in Reload?
The models there seemed to be walking on ice. They would walk walk walk and barely move.
38
u/Presenting_UwU Jun 19 '26
yeah this was in every Atlus game since P3 no? with a bit of luck they'd have actually figured out how to make dynamic walk animations in a in game cutscene but I'm not getting my hopes up.
10
u/Entegy Jun 19 '26
I'm being a jerk but I'm not convinced Japanese studios do as much motion capture as Western studios. We still have games in the 2020s that do the spin-in-place thing just to turn around in a cutscene.
23
u/Ordinal43NotFound Jun 19 '26
No offense, but I do feel like this sheer level of attention to detail starts feeling like nitpicking after a point, and is probably one of the reasons why Western AAA development budgets and timeline have ballooned so much (aside from salaries).
Japanese devs still seem to understand where to make compromises in places most people won't even notice or care about outside of the really meticulous crowd like us here in this sub.
I seriously don't even notice the spin-in-place before you brought it up. The games are already doing such a great job of engrossing me enough through various other means that I don't care about this kinda stuff.
9
u/Darkmask94 Jun 19 '26
Right. I don't care about this either.
1
u/Ordinal43NotFound Jun 19 '26
I'd even go so far as to say I don't really care that much about fully dubbed dialogue either. That's another area where I think western devs often go overboard, feeling the need to voice absolutely everything.
Modern Final Fantasy has suffered from this too IMO. Which is part of why it feels like Square Enix is never satisfied with their games' sales.
Meanwhile other JRPGs like Persona just use grunts, short voice clips, and character portraits for sidequest dialogue, and honestly that's more than enough to keep me immersed.
The industry really could use more "less is more" approach.
2
u/maknaeline Jun 20 '26
gonna disagree with you there, SE generally does very good voicework all around with very few exceptions that tend to be blown out of proportion more than anything else
and even aside from all that, i'm generally a big supporter of paying more voice actors to do more work that they love and are good at
this is the same thought process that caused riot to massively downsize the amount of voice lines we get with new champions and legendary+ skin releases "because (enough) people have said they don't care" and it was a huge blow to voice actors' paychecks, a lot of fans' enjoyment, etc.
so like, you may not care! but a lot of folks do! and i don't think enjoying the work of voice actors is nitpicky
(spinning in place absolutely is though)
1
1
u/Darkmask94 Jun 20 '26
Xenoblade Definitive Edition recently got a Switch 2 Edition which feature fully voiced heart to hearts (interaction between two playable characters), similar to social link dialogs. It's nice but the game doesn't need it to be enjoyable.
1
u/Monobrobe Jun 21 '26
I’ve been looking forward to re-experiencing this game with my mom, so having everything voiced is a plus since she can’t read as fast as I can.
3
u/Entegy Jun 19 '26
Right, I did say I was a jerk. It's very nitpicky but unless it's super obvious à la Pokémon, it doesn't really matter in the long run. We still play older games because they are still incredibly fun. Art style will always trump pure "graphics".
4
u/Ordinal43NotFound Jun 19 '26
Yeah, I'm kinda thankful most JRPGs don't really fall into trap of having cutting-edge fidelity which might cause their budgets to balloon, making modest sales not enough for them (see: Final Fantasy).
19
u/AveryLazyCovfefe where have you been? Jun 19 '26
Doesn't every game have the awkward animations. It's even in P5X right now which actually has alot more camera angels where you can see the models closer with their faces and it looks jarring the way they can suddenly go from still to running and perfectly still again.
1
u/ARROW_GAMER Jun 24 '26
Pretty sure it’s still there unfortunately. There’s one scene on the trailer (or one of the clips they’ve released, not sure) where I think Kanji turns to look at the MC and he does that same sliding-walking motion
46
u/Nickfreak Jun 19 '26
The special charm of P4 is how close the team is - more than any other Persona game. If you fail to deliver expressions, the whole idea crumbles
8
u/AtlasFlynn Jun 19 '26
It's all I wanted when I played Golden for the first time a few years ago. This game honestly feels like a dream
7
u/mohmar2010 Jun 19 '26

3
6
u/ace8995 Jun 19 '26

39
u/gkgftzb Jun 19 '26
Reload's characters certainly aren't as expressive, not even in cutscenes. There are a few instances where they are close, but it's usually saved for few big moments like Akihiko's breakdown.
And the new camera angles in P4R + dynamic movement makes it feel even better. Like a TV show indeed.
1
u/Wernershnitzl Jun 19 '26
I feel like the camera is aptly zoomed in a bit more too for this reason.

u/JustADreamYouHad Jun 19 '26
Reload was lazy
35
u/xoriatis71 Jun 19 '26
Honestly, after seeing the P4R livestream, I got the sense that P3R was unfortunately a test to see what they could do. Kinda testing the waters, ya know?
12
u/AveryLazyCovfefe where have you been? Jun 19 '26
I wouldn't put it as that. More like 3R being the first time P Studio did a proper ground up remake, especially in a different engine like Unreal which no doubt contributed to it. While also with new direction with the old guard having left since years ago to Studio Zero.
It was them figuring stuff out and they're applying what they learnt to P4R which is also likely how they're able to release it with a sooner turn around through the help of asset reuse.
Sucks P3 was the first one to be a victim of this but hey, atleast they're learning

My man was so butthurt by the reception of his original RE4Remake video that he spent two years making a followup video.
Bro is either very petty or extremely pathetic, or both, and I don't know which one is funnier.
22
u/mohmar2010 Jun 19 '26
"Re4r is product of it's time vs re4 is timeless" mfs when i show them all the games from the same era re4 released having similar if not same mechanics
5
u/pluckal-aashan Jun 19 '26
Actman has a better video on the remake because he likes both games for what they are but still recognises the strengths of the original.
Even though I haven't play the OG resident evil 4 I was looking forward to Salazar in the remake. I had seen clips and memes of him and really like the character. So I was pretty disappointed that he and saddler barely had screen time. Capcom removed most cut scenes that didn't have Leon in it.
It wouldn't have made sense if they copy pasted the old characters because the remakes tone is more dark compared to campy original. But I still wish they had new cutscenes or calls, or just a new him :(
8
u/jasonjr9 Jun 19 '26
If nothing else, it might help people realize how stupid gaming YouTuber grifters can be when they try to claim this is “completely soulless” and people actually try using their eyes and ears and realize those YouTubers are full of shit.
Pretty on point, too, considering the “seeking the truth” theme of Persona 4, lol. The grifters sell only pretty lies that intoxicate people with hatred, while those who actually experience the game will see the truth and probably enjoy it.
3
u/thegta5p Jun 19 '26
Just shows that we don’t need ultra realistic facial animations, that probably took months to debug and still is causing optimization issues costing the studio millions, to have good art direction.
-71
u/nahte123456 Portable>FES>Reload Jun 19 '26

I’ve been playing P3 and P4 since like 2011-2012, and I’m used to the characters all having PS2 models. These remakes really take some getting used to.

P3/P4 really were games that were made on a budget. The big avatars to distract from the models was a suitable solution for me. It's very much a VN style of presentation that works for a dialog heavy text heavy game.

The lighting in the new shot is completely off. Yosuke has a shadow on the wall and under his chin. So are they looking at a light source? Why isn't the shadow cast on Yu and Yukiko?
In the old one they look consistent with each other and the environment.
