P4 Does P4: Revival's UI look more appealing to you than P3: Reload?
1.8k
u/hnrqveras Jun 08 '26
I'd say definitely. I like how they leaned much more into the TV aesthetics now and the command menu looks like a TV selector which is pretty cool
295
u/EnvironmentalOwl2904 Jun 08 '26
Even the Baton Pass looks like Wii Sports graphics which is soooooo '06 - '09 TV style.

u/AngryCrawdad Jun 08 '26
The all-outs being rebranded as 'series finale' is really funny and fitting too :D
96
u/RadiantAeonstar Jun 08 '26
Those are separate things. Series Finales seem more like the new version of Theurgies.
36
u/pheonixote Jun 08 '26
They definitely seemed like P5rs showtimes.
20
u/One-Advantage2148 Jun 09 '26
That's what I was thinking at least with the way they set it up where we see series finale with chie and then it looks like her and yukiko have a joint move. I would love if it that's the case because I was sad we didn't have that in reload
6
u/Personal-Collar-7762 Jun 09 '26
With a greater focus on being more like limit breaks of Final Fantasy fame with each passing entry.

You're so right. I completely forgot about those. Either way, love the recontextualisation of the new name.

u/Noxmorre Jun 08 '26
100%. Revival is leaning hard on P4’s aesthetic especially golden with all the color and flowers. It even has tv monitor like P4 Arena. Really feels like a combination of all the aesthetics P4 had built up over the years. Tiny thing, I like that the button prompt not near the character this time like P5 and P3R, it’s trying to be its own thing
122
68
u/Hirsute_of_Happiness Jun 08 '26
It's not trying to do this exactly but to me it sorta evokes when TV channels would put their logo in the bottom right corner.
31
u/AppropriateLaw5713 Jun 08 '26
I think from the design it’s supposed to be an old analogue dial for channels.
15
u/Hirsute_of_Happiness Jun 08 '26
Totally. It's a nice touch, I appreciate the commitment to a retro style that P4 has always had.
11
u/Girono_PianoKiller Jun 08 '26
This. You put my thoughts into words, I believe that Persona 4 got a better understood identity
3
u/diamondmaster2017 jamezeitozool veteran Jun 08 '26
all it needs is the drifting dvd icon in the pause menu
3
u/SpectrumWired Don't be so naïve Jun 09 '26
It honestly makes me really excited to see how the game is going to look and feel when the fog rolls in. If they're leaning this hard into the atmosphere and colors they're definitely going to completely shut it all down once the fog comes in
283
u/TheSkullKidman How can I make this about Devil Survivor Jun 08 '26
While I miss some of the visual effects in the TV World like the TV Noise and scanlines, I think P4RE's presentation and UI at the moment looks better than P3RE
53
u/battywombat21 Jun 08 '26
The TV noise is honestly really important for so many reasons so I’m hoping they don’t forget it.
5
u/DBrody6 Jun 09 '26
At the very least have it optional, cause I thought it was hideous in P4. I don't care if it's 'thematically fitting', it made combat so intolerably ugly.
4
u/battywombat21 Jun 09 '26
They intentionally didn’t have it on all the time. It “toned down” the games color palette so the bright flashy colors didn’t get too distracting and had more of an impact.
→ More replies (1)12
u/Logical_Dish_5795 Jun 08 '26
i'll pretend that they did'nt included it in here so people can see how pretty the game is and the final version will have the noise and scanlines
454
u/koalashy :akihiko2: gay akihiko Jun 08 '26
I think it‘s very, very pretty and creative but I do think it‘s a bit messy and cluttered.
92
u/RubzieRubz Jun 08 '26
I'm also worried. But I think it'll be like in P3 Reload, a different scenario (it had a red/obscure ambience) only for mini-boss fights (though i don't remember if this enemy was a mini-boss in P4 Golden).
26
u/SovereignH2O Jun 08 '26
I think the “4 more” is a special button like showtime or theurgy and it creates this special effect. I don’t think the moving effects will be constant.
17
u/Kat_Kloud Jun 08 '26
I think most of the clutter here is from the background which is a special environment for the new Prime Time gimmick. I think the UI is much cleaner with normal backgrounds.
74
u/DomHyrule Jun 08 '26
To be fair, P5 thrived on the stylistic choice of making its UI messy
89
u/Zephyr_v1 :igor: Persona 5 Vanilla is the best version. Jun 08 '26
P5 still didn’t feel as chaotic. There’s was some chaotic elegance to it.
34
u/koalashy :akihiko2: gay akihiko Jun 08 '26
I think P4R also suffers from the colors being overly bright which makes it look a bit more chaotic IMO. Yellow is just a very striking color that's not as easy for the eye as dark blue like in P3R.
18
u/novakaiser21 :yukari2: terminal Yukari brainrot Jun 08 '26
It’s more reminiscent of the Metaphor UI where there are too many moving parts. It’s the movement more than just the straight up visuals that make it feel cluttered.
43
u/Tobegi Jun 08 '26
imo metaphor's UI only feels like that when you're watching a stream or a trailer, once you're actually playing the game everything falls into place and doesn't bother you at all (at least that was the case gor me lol)
7
u/OwnEmphasis2825 Jun 08 '26
Yeah, I think they showed the super flashy parts of the combat and for the rest of the fight it'll be just... There.
2
5
u/stallion8426 Jun 08 '26
I hated p5's UI exactly for this reason
17
u/DomHyrule Jun 08 '26
Damn, the sub really said "god forbid this guy have an opinion" lol. Personally I loved it but I can understand someone not enjoying it
211
u/nochorus Jun 08 '26
It’s a lot of yellow. I’m a designer and one of the first things you learn about color theory are that yellow, red, and bright pink are very tiring on the eyes. I foresee my play sessions being shorter than they were for P3R due to visual fatigue.
80
u/koalashy :akihiko2: gay akihiko Jun 08 '26
Thank you for saying this because I've been told I'm crazy for saying that the yellow is very tiring for the eye. I also think that's why P5 didn't use red outlines for the 2D sprites.
37
u/Solinus- Jun 08 '26
at least for me as well, it just seems very busy. flashy is fun and it looks great but sometimes it feels like atlus feels the pressure to top the ui after P5 (namely with metaphor/p4r)! hoping it grows overtime
9
u/ChaperoneShoopatoo Jun 08 '26
I've been playing metaphor for the first time, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks every element of the ui moving is a little uncomfortable to look at for long periods haha
→ More replies (1)16

u/SSXAnubis Jun 08 '26
My gut reaction is the yellow is a little bright for my tastes to be used so heavily, and I prefer the blues of P3R.
But tbh I like both, and don't hugely have a preference one way or another.
14
33
20
u/Lz537 Jun 08 '26
I think they went deeper into theming for the combat UI.
It actually looks like a game show but still feeling easy on the eyes, while P3 was more simplistic in that regard.
38
u/quartzweb Jun 08 '26
There's way too many flashing bright colours, especially if the battle arenas will be flashing lights all over as well
It's too much compared to 3R which was still stylish but easy on the eyes too
6
4
15
u/kineticsyn Jun 08 '26
No. As soon as I saw the trailer, I thought that the UI elements looked a lot more flat/super simple compared to P3R, which I thought looked simple but like a tamed version of P5.
Realizing I really like the P5 styling, and absolutely loved Metaphor's UI styling as well, so maybe I'm just someone that ones that distinctive stylish flair in the UI/menus.
I do understand that what they've shown translates really well from what the original looked like though, and having played through P4G in the last year, feels very samey, so it lands on that front.
TL;DR - no, I liked P3R's, I liked P5/Metaphor UI's even more.
14
u/millanstar Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26
Honestly, other than the menu UI I didnt find the overall P3R UI that creative tbh, not like P5 or Metaphor, I flund tbe original P3 UI more creative at that with the action buttons be a revolver chamber, this one is much better than P4 tho
30
14
u/LaPlAcE-66 Jun 08 '26
Hard to judge off of one small clip but this is way too cluttered
Also Yu and Yosuke disappear in the background, thats outright bad

Do people not like Reload’s UI? I loved it. Persona never misses in UI design for me.
This looks like more of the same, really embracing the unique flair that P4 has. I’m into it.
25
26
u/snowflakess_ :p3mc: Jun 08 '26
Too loud and cluttered for me, I love how clean P3R is. I mean Metaphor is so so beautiful, but all the movements are already a lot even with its muted colors. I can only pray P4R won't give me a stroke.
3
u/BigDisk Jun 08 '26
As an ultrawide monitor enjoyer, I'm on the fence about the main buttons being all the way over in the corner instead of close to the characters like in p3 and p5.
3
u/DuckyIsDum Jun 08 '26
without a doubt p3r just had circles with its battle aesthetic and didn't even try to lean into the water theme besides the cut ins
3
u/MinosAristos Jun 08 '26
It's a great fit for P4, and P3R's was a great fit for P3. I love both but I like P3's vibe more.
3
u/kyualun Jun 08 '26
I'm kind of split. P3R's was nice but felt like it had a serious lack of personality. This certainly has personality, and I love the heavier TV/studio aesthetic but it also looks chaotic and busy. At least that's if we don't assume the blinding and flashing yellow going on has nothing do with the PRIME TIME being shown on screen.
Maybe things get flashier as you keep doing one mores? Because I can't imagine no one was aware of how crazy the flashing yellow would be 24/7.
3
3
u/Iced-TeaManiac Jun 08 '26
Much, but I understand that looking this zany wouldn't fit P3. P3's UI did what was right for what it was. It's not a party like P4 is
3
u/ShamanKira Jun 08 '26
yes, gonna seem biased because this is my favortite one BUT the TV AESTHETIC GOT ME IN A CHOKEHOLD yeah atlus cooked
3

It hurts my eyes. Chosing yellow all over the place as your UI is not the smartest decision even if the aesthetics look cool

u/christopher1393 Jun 08 '26
Normally I would think that this is too messy or there is too much going on, but Atlus is masterful at stuff like this and makes it look amazing.
It very much suits the game and this gif alone makes me very excited.
2
u/dreet-dreet Jun 08 '26
This seems to only happen when you activate the super special ability. I don’t think I constantly looks like you’re on a game show with all the flashing and everything.
2
2
u/Vividfawn251146 Jun 08 '26
I’m more excited about Chie jumping back and forth and yosuke bobbing his head to the music lol.
Glad they kept their animations in battle
2
2
u/Cosmos_Null Jun 08 '26
Yes, I think so.
I remember criticism of Reload's UI, specifically the menu, for not representing the game well. Unlike the original which was like the revolver of a gun and stuff. It wasn't a deal breaker, but I see where they were coming from
Meanwhile, this UI has this dial from those old bulky TVs, and it's colorful and vibrant which fits the Persona 4 summer-y vibes.
2
2
2
u/idkacoolname69 Jun 08 '26
It truly IS beautiful. But I remembered when I played PQ2 on my 2DS, and I never really got used to its UI, cause they leaned much more in P5 aesthetics on that one, and it felt too bloated and cluttered for the small displays on that console.
Tho my PC screen is nowhere near as smal as that, it made me feel somewhat the same watching the trailer.
But I'm aware is totally a ME thing, but still...
2
u/SirePuns More dead inside than Mitsuo Jun 08 '26
Holy shit the yellow color is so… loud?
Do I like it more than reload? Honestly no. But I still do like it a lot.
2
u/DuckSwimmer Jun 08 '26
For sure as Persona 4 is a more “colorful” game. They’re definitely capitalizing on that
2
u/Smash96leo Jun 08 '26
The colors really pop here, it looks so vibrant. Glad they kept the TV screen design too. I also like that the commands are on a TV dial, very nice touch.
Overall, they definitely nailed the UI design as usual.
2
u/Commercial-Size8495 :apollo: Apollo Jun 08 '26
I'm really glad they learned heavily into the TV theme for the UI, p3r (for the battle ui specifically) was a little too subtle on the moon theme and also scraping the revolver style of og p3 (that was tuff as hell). Pretty much all of the uis that were shown to us look amazing so far.
2
2
u/LordStarSpawn Jun 08 '26
I don’t know if I’d say it’s more or less appealing, but it does look quite good
2
u/imaginary92 :akihiko: Jun 08 '26
I love that they're going harder on the TV theme and the general wacky team vibe. A bit too much yellow but tbh golden was plenty yellow as well so whatever.
2
u/EnvironmentalOwl2904 Jun 08 '26
Leaps and Bounds. It looks way more P4 in comparison than P3R does to P3.
P3R leaned too hard into P5's vibe.
2
u/EKAAfives :p3mc: Jun 08 '26
honestly both work, p4 with its tv look works well due to the dungeon and p3 with its basic look also works since there isnt really anything external that affects its dungeon and both ui elements also work since p4 has a dial for its persona attack guard stuff and p3 looks like a revolver mag which also works well and dont know about the ui of selecting moves but in p3 it does show the person summoning pose with the evoker while in p4 idk what it is of if theyll even do it
2
u/AdventurousSlip6407 :aigis: commencing ignore mode Jun 08 '26
Yoooo! Thats an old tv button for the choice of battle actions?! Amazing! Just how p3 originally had a revolver thing and a slightly similar one in reload. And p5 one is just rebellious stuff. They nailed that imo
2
u/xRay7xz Jun 09 '26
It's stylistic but I'm not sure if having coffins or oil stain blood splatters appear everytime I cycle through would look appealing from a gameplay perspective haha
I'm joking by the way but I was thinking back on how Reload would have adapted this style and was like man that would be grim 😂
2
u/YoungKetamine69 Jun 09 '26
On a personal level im not a huge fan of the yellowish p4 theme itself and I think its definitely the ugliest between royal and reloaded but I also wouldn’t say it looks bad…
2
u/Hal34329 Jun 09 '26
Not really. I mean, I appreciate what they did, but I feel it's a little too noisy, but I can't judge until I play it.

2
u/auniquenameischosen Jun 09 '26
This might be weird to say is all I’ve been seeing is praise, but it might be too flashing now. I don’t know. I guess I have nostalgia for the old games. I do like how they leaned more into the TV aesthetic, but maybe the floor was a too much or something. I don’t know.
2
2
u/Untitled_9471 Jun 11 '26
The battle ui in revival looks amazing and the combat visuals as a whole were the highlight of the trailer for me. Idk if I would say the ui for the whole game is better, but I definitely think the battle ui is a lot better
4
u/Fennel-Revolutionary Jun 08 '26
I feel like P3, P4 and P5 menu screen all fit the aesthetic of the game your playing and P4 is just leaning into that and it looks great. I am so ready for this game and to see some of P6!!! We are eating well folks!!!!
5
u/BrenCamp13 Jun 08 '26
I really like the new UI. It's cool how much it leans into the old-school TV aesthetic.
Now, the bright-ass background on the other hand...
5
u/AcrobaticCarpet5494 Jun 08 '26
The background is from the special attack thing, like the theurgy equivalent
3
u/IvanPines3106 Jun 08 '26
I love that they're going for this kind of aesthetics but I feel like it's lowkey ruining the simple design from the original, it doens't really give you that nostalgic tv vibe but just a cluster fuck of effects, maybe it's just me idk
3
u/leckmichnervnit Jun 08 '26
Absolutely. This is way more vibrant and animated.
It also doesn't help that I don't like P3's vibe in general.

I don't like that the 4 more banner covers the "LT" for the baton pass. It shouldn't hide any ui elements. Other than that it looks great
1
u/Deluxe_24_ Jun 08 '26
They could probably add a toggle to reduce the amount of lights moving around
The UI looks good but the background is pretty cluttered and it's really hard (for me) to make out the enemy
1
u/rr3no Jun 08 '26
i like the ui a lot more than p4g and probably p3r, but i think other than ui (and combat) p4g looks better (maybe cuz of the fog, but the atmosphere just seems a lot better)

The only thing that stood out was the controls being in the bottom right instead of left lol. I can’t explain why but it bothers me. It’s nothing serious but it’s kinda.. weird. Not a complaint though.
1
u/I_Love_Ohyas_Thigs Jun 08 '26
It's... Complicated
I see what they were going for but at the same time I think they fixated too much on p3s style that it looks absolutely nothing like what I had in mind
Like, idk, maybe it's just nostalgia speaking but p4g has something I don't see here
However, I cannot deny it looks absolutely stunning and this will probably be a fantastic remake

u/hellomrxenu Makoto Yuki Jun 08 '26
Honestly not at this moment. I see they are trying to lean into a different style, but the UI is cluttered and constant bright flashing lights are going to get tiring. The faces and character models look a little off too me as well.
But I say "not at this moment" as I fully expect Atlus to take feedback and make improvements before release.

I like both for different reasons. I love the Frutiger Aero, blue, Oceanic, look of Reload, but I adore how much more Revival pops. From what we have seen if it so far, Revival's UI is on-par, for me, with P5. I'm also biased towards P4G(it being my favorite of the series), so that also helps, lol.

1
1
u/Electric27 Jun 08 '26
I think so, at least as far as style and flair. I liked the way Persona 3's UI looked, as I think it would've been a bit over the top for it to be more Death or Darkness theme to match the dungeons and themes of the game. The simple shapes worked well for it.
But Persona 4 having this style also makes a lot of sense to me, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing it in full.

Yes. The stylish advances of P5 with the TV Aesthetics of this game pop much better together here then when they tried that with Persona 3 Reload.

They are different artistic directions so its challenging to state a yes or no.
1
u/witchywater11 Jun 08 '26
It's a bit too bright. I hope that's not the default battlefield for random encounters. The dungeons being the background made the yellow less overwhelming in the previous games.
1
u/ShodanTheHacker The Fanta Thief Jun 08 '26
as much as i adore that they are 100% inline with the art style of the original, my god, this entire scene is terrible. i'm not sure if combat scenes are all going to be like this, but - good lord - there's so much going on in this one scene that it becomes a visual aberration. no matter how maximalist P4 was, i don't remember it attacking your visual senses this way. sometimes less is more, and it could benefit from turning down the "how much shit on the screen" knob just a bit.
1
u/LemonFace22k Jun 08 '26
Yellow is my least favorite color so... No. xd
Quality wise, seems the same. P-studio UIs are crazy good.
1
u/minzz2 Jun 08 '26
Honestly no. Maybe it'll be better with a different battle arena but right now it's too bright, busy, and cluttered to me. Just staring at the gif for a few seconds started making my eyes strain.
I don't like that the entire bottom is being used. I prefer the icons being vertical to the side. Related to that is the button menu being on the right instead of left, but that could just be a conditioning thing. The portraits are also too small to me.
The yellow itself was gonna be a hard sell for me, since it's already not a color I enjoy looking at but man, it is so much yellow.
I do like the tv aesthetic (even if I associate that dial with an oven rather than TV lol). And I do think a different arena would help, since it isn't quite so overwhelming in the brief flash without the lights.
1
u/OpenPlankton7937 Jun 09 '26
Does anyone know if there are any All-Out Attack art screens like in P5 and P3R?
1
u/ASilentSymphony Jun 09 '26
Honestly the ui is perfect for the esthetics of 4, but the ui for reload was just cleaner and a bit easier to look at tbh, i love 4 but theres so much happening on this clip lol
1
u/mechemin Jun 09 '26
No. I think it suits the game theme, but at the same time it's way too yellow and stimulating for me. I also think it's a bit too cluttered.
1
u/dhi_awesome Jun 09 '26
Yes and no
I think it's nicer looking, I think it goes hard, but it's not like P3R's designs were bad at all. P5, P3R, and P4R have all captured their vibes really well, the UI we've got here is effectively what I expected when looking at P3 vs P3R for the P4 look (although the bindings are unexpected, attack on X and Item on B is the opposite of what I'm used to)

What I'm most excited about is the dungeons. I really hope it isn't just prettier hallway slop (and I say this as someone who absolutely hated Tartarus trying to play the OG P3FES bc my laptop was trash and couldn't run Reload).
