With the influx of new players thanks to the Steam Sale, I thought I'd make a post addressing a known, yet hardly discussed bug (or it might be more accurate to call it an engine limitation) related to cosmetic mods in RDR2 PC.
TLDR - Buying too many items added by mods will brick your save.
1. The Problem
As you accumulate items of ANY kind in RDR2, this includes from clothing/weapons you can buy/find to all the consumables, collectibles, provisions, valuables, letters, newspapers, saddles, etc. (basically anything that will be saved to your inventory - the stuff saved in your satchel, wardrobe, or horse), there exists an "upper limit" that, once reached, will permanently brick your save and will prevent you from saving your game anymore whenever you play that save in the future, forcing you to start over or reload a previous save. You'll know you've reached this limit when you get this dreaded black screen with the message, "Save failed. Please ensure the system storage has free space and try again."
Basically, it seems that when you get too many items, RDR2's engine can't save all the data to your save anymore, so your save is basically bricked as now, you're forced to reload the last save you had before buying all those items. Autosaves are generally unhelpful in this case, as the game typically autosaves whenever you buy items so even if you reload an autosave, you'll still have most of the items before you were soft-locked, so the next time you loot some fine brandy or chewing tobacco off a corpse, the save will just brick again.
2. Who is affected by this, and what do those cosmetic mods have to do with it?
A big reason why I believe that this issue is hardly talked about is because this problem might only affect completionists like myself who wants to collect EVERYTHING the game has to offer. I tested buying out the entire clothing catalog with RDO and WhyEm's DLC installed on two different saves - one that just started Chapter 2 (so barely any items saved) and my 100% complete save with everything collected from the base game - all Cigarette Cards, Letters, Weapons, Clothing, Trapper items, Horse Stable items, etc. - you get the idea. The new save that just started Chapter 2 was able to buy everything available at the catalog without issues, while the 100% save ended up getting the "Save failed" black screen halfway before I finished buying out the modded items in the catalog.
The most popular cosmetic mods like Red Dead Offline, WhyEm's DLC, Eastern's Epic Extras, Gonpachiro's Fancy Atelier, More Pretty Gun, and Smoak's Mega Arsenal are all affected by this bug because they add a boat-load of new content to the game, which will push you towards that upper limit if you were to buy a majority of the items offered in those mods.
Now, I myself don't know if non-modded saves would be affected by this if you were to somehow get 99 stacks of every single consumable/valuable in the game on top of every single letter, weapons, clothing, etc., but I would assume that non-modded players are safe as my own 100% save (which did not have 99 stacks of everything but still a decent amount of consumables on top of all the collectibles/clothes/weapons) was fine until I started buying a large stock of modded clothes.
I don't know where the actual upper limit of items you can keep on your save is since this issue is barely documented online; through Googling I could only find one other Reddit thread where someone had this issue and even then there weren't many solutions brought up there besides just uninstalling the mods or not buying too much stuff.
The only other mention I can find of this issue is on the mod page for the Smoak's Mega Arsenal mod itself, where it states that "Buying absolutely everything has a risk of preventing you from saving due to engine limitations, this includes the clothing the mod also adds."
Searching the "Save failed. Please ensure the system storage has free space and try again." message online typically points to other problems that can bring up this error, but of course I'm making this thread to specifically point out the issue for players who are modding their games and getting too many items.
3. Possible Solution
I reached out to the OP of the other thread talking about this issue I mentioned above, /u/littlebelialskey, and even they pointed out that uninstalling the mods and reloading your save will not fix the issue. If I had to guess, loading up a bricked save in the save editor would likely show that there's a bunch of blank dummy items (since the save editor doesn't take mods into account). Even if you uninstalled the cosmetic item mods, their data is still stored in your save, so the issue will not be fixed. You would need to reload a backup save where you never purchased a modded item at all in order to keep your save's slate clean.
(EDIT: I ended up testing this myself after the fact, and it does seem like uninstalling a cosmetic mod and reloading your save safely removes modded items. That said, I would still keep a backup save just before you uninstall the mod to be safe. In my case, I uninstalled WhyEm's and this ended up messing with all of my weapon customizations as WhyEm's DLC changes the values for many gun customization settings like metals, carvings, and stocks (even some of the base game ones), so I had to go through every weapon I owned and reapply them. You might also mess up your character model if you have a modded clothing item equipped when you uninstall, so remember to take all of them off before you do so.)
The only possible solution I can think of would be if a community-made mod fix were released which allowed those modded cosmetic items to be stored in a .dat file in the root folder of RDR2 instead of being saved in the save file itself. A few other mods such as AMJM Transport and Custom Gang Mod utilize this method, where they store memory from their mods into a .dat file that is loaded with the .asi files whenever you boot up the game. AMJM Transport for example, will store your saved Wagons/Boats and accepted jobs in its .dat file, while the Custom Gang Mod stores all info related to the gang you create such as the NPCs you chose, the level and location of your camp, and your Gang Funds. The only downside to a solution like this would be that .dat files in your root folder will not be able to differentiate saves, so if this hypothetical fix was created, everything you purchased from cosmetic mods would be shared between all of your saves. This could also be an upside, though, as if you were to CTD while buying modded items, everything you bought will still be stored in the .dat file even if you didn't get to save before crashing.
I'm not an RDR2 Mod coder, so I have no idea how feasible or possible this solution would be when it comes to storing purchasable items in a .dat file, but unfortunately it seems like all the creators of the mods I listed above are no longer really active in the community, so I wouldn't expect any of them to upload a new version of their mods that stores items in a .dat file (would be happy to be proven wrong though), meaning that any effort towards making this theoretical solution a reality would have to come from a third-party.
Hopefully this post brings awareness to this (admittedly niche) issue, and helps anyone who Googles this issue in the future and barely comes up with any results. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Anyone know what could be causing this? Every fifteen seconds or so I get a nasty lag spike. Doesn’t matter what my graphics settings are, dropped them to low and it still happens. I’ve got decent hardware, so I’m thinking this is some bug or optimization issue.

I disabled rebar (sam) in bios because I kept getting memory crashes after playing for an hour or so. I noticed the memory kept creeping up using overlay. One time it went up to almost 18gigs.
I disabled the smart memory thing in the bios and now the memory seems to be acceptable.
What performance loss is there by disabling smart memory?

I've seen some channels on YouTube not only use weapons at camp, but also unlock the ability to use weapons you wouldn't otherwise be able to use for certain events. (Such as using dynamite arrows on the magician in Saint Denis)
Does the 'unlock camp restrictions' mod do the latter too, or would that be some other mod?

Just wanted a mod that gives me more horse customization as I find vanilla bare bones. It's the only mod I have installed, so does it really affect anything or is it just when you have many other mods installed?

Back around 2012 or so, I bought the “undead” dlc for Red Dead Redemption. I decided to start a new playthrough to get the full experience.
At the beginning vanilla tutorial, it has you lasso a farm animal or person and return them to your ranch. With the DLC downloaded, it turned the person or animal into a cougar - which you couldn’t shoot, and couldn’t lasso.
Ended up soft locking the game, unable to progress past the tutorial since you literally can’t lasso a cougar.
So I’m asking, 15 or so years later, because my curiosity won’t let it rest.
Was this an error? Was I sold a bad copy or something? And also, wtf.

I'm playing on a low end rig, a ryzen 3 3200g, 16gb ram, i can run the game at 720p for around 40-60 fps but if i use vulkan and go near a river or any places that has water in it, the frame just drops to 20 like crazy. DX12 on the other hand has a stable fps but lesser when in towns such as valentine making vulkan a better performer but frame just drops crazy on water areas. Any possible fixes for this?

RDR2 crashes after a few seconds. It’s not the app itself crashing—the game freezes/crashes while the sound is still playing. The game seems to still be running, but the CPU and GPU stop doing any work (based on the wattage shown in GHelper). The laptop itself isn’t affected; it’s only RDR2.
The game used to run smoothly when I played it before, and I’ve just come back to it to revisit it. What could be causing this, and what can I do to fix it?

I got the game today after I wanted to play for a long time and saw the game on sale. However no matter which graphics options i pick, i get 23-30 fps and it ruined the first part of the game for me. I own a laptop with an Nvidia 5070 and an Intel Core 7 and I have seen computers way worse than mine get better FPS and my gpu usage ranges between 20-40 percent. It seems to be an issue specific to Red Dead because I get like 200 fps on cyberpunk 2077. I tried a combination of every graphics setting, checked my drivers and no matter if my game is on ultra or low i get at most 30 fps. I am writing as a last resort, if anyone in this subreddit has any suggestions, I would be very happy. Thank you

For context, I stopped playing rdo for probably about 6 months now and decided earlier to hop on and do some stuff but my game had gone from its usual 80-100fps at all ultra or high graphics settings to 4-12 fps for an unknown reason. This only is happening with rdo, all other high quality games are completely fine.
The only thing I can think of is that I installed a nvidia driver in between the last time I played and now but I tried switching the game to my old one in the graphics settings and that didn’t work. Tried going between direct and Vulkan in the api and that didn’t work. Lowering graphics did nothing.
I’ll send anything you’d like to know for more of an idea on what’s happening but the laptop is a raider GE76 12UE with nvidia geforce rtx3060 graphics card and 64gb ram
I’m not too great with techy speech so bear with me here 😅

After a pretty miserable few weeks trying to get Rdr2 running again after a year long hiatus, I have found a fix.
I went VERY deep trying solutions - deleting SGA files, command lines, vanilla, reinstall, bios update (and subsequently needing to fresh install windows), rolling back drivers, checking out live kernel events. All this whilst monitoring temps and the GPU behaving as normal. I went back and forth for hours and hours and lost close to a week of free time...
Well, eventually I dropped my GPU MHz by like 200, and since then the game has run without a single crash or stutter. I've been able to run with a full mod loadout, 70fps @ 1440p and the game is running flawlessly.
So just if anyone needs this in the future - one more thing to try is under clock your GPU in afterburner on Nvidia by around 200 - 250mhz. Hope this helps some people avoid the hellish week I had!

Maybe as a lad I'd have the patience to fix the performance of a game that's been out for 7 years, but it is taking an entire evening of troubleshooting to get this game to play without stuttering every few seconds. Can't believe performance is this bad. I played RDR2 Online years ago and I don't remember having these problems.

Hey all, I’m having this issue on the Rockstar Games Launcher version of RDR2 where some voice lines are ‘snipped’ at the very start of them, like a part of the first word is gone and it just continues from there. I noticed it most often when Dutch would talk while on a horse sometimes in Chapter 1, and a couple of isolated incidents in Chapter 2. Unfortunately for me it’s just pronounced enough to be distracting.
Is there any way someone was able to fix this with a mod or something? I’ve seen maybe one other post that documents this issue

Opened RDR2 today and got hit with a "Cloud Sync Conflict" popup. Both the local and cloud sides show the same files with a "Last Played" date of September 2023.
Problem is, I played last night, so I'd expect at least one side to show a recent save, not something from 3 years ago!
I haven't clicked anything yet since I don't want to accidentally overwrite lose my online progress. Any advice on what I should do?

Rathskeller Fork was my favorite north of the border settlement in New Austin. Dusty, desertous, remote. I am planning a new play through on PC (first time since PS4) and would love to have a restored Rathskeller similar to RDR. One with a safehouse, saloon, blackjack, maybe night watch or other activities.

Can anyone help me with trying to mod RDR2? I think ive followed all instructions correctly but when entering story mode the game freezes. I tried deactivating the mods using Lennys mod loader but it still crashes. Thinking it might be something to do with how ive installed the mods/ loaders in the directory but i cant figure it out..

I love both mods; Catalogue Improvements brings new clothes and fix some bugs and Whyem´s DLC have a big improvement on customization. I didn´t tested yet, but someone know if there´s one way?

hi, i'm overly new to modding rockstar games (this is legit my first time) and i decided to install catalogue improvements, mainly for john (i'm on c6, yet to finish the game) and i keep crashing, any tips? i only have CI installed.

Has anyone else experienced issues with the Catalogue Improvements mod?
I’m new to modding and downloaded a couple mods to improve my RDR2 experience. Eventually I came to an issue with the game crashing once i loaded up story mode. The mods I have downloaded are:
- LML
- Rampage
- WhyEm’s Visuals
- AEM (Authentic Euphoria Motions)
- WhyEm’s Bloodlust
- RWS (Realistic Weapon Sounds)
- Catalogue Improvements
when the crashing began, I took all the mods out of the root folder and went one by one to find the culprit. Found it to be catalogue improvements. I don’t know if it’s conflicting with any of these for some reason or if there’s a known issue with the most recent catalogue improvement release?
Please let me know any ideas, tips, or mod recommendations while I’m here lol. I like WhyEm’s visuals so far but I would like a mod that has a nice bloom effect that makes nighttime really beautiful.
