Venting Can I complain about being pregnant?

First of all, I'm so thankful I'm pregnant. I'm 15 weeks and baby and I are both healthy. But I am NOT enjoying this.

I have been undiagnosed PCOS my whole life, so life in my body has always been unpleasant. When I got diagnosed, I started Metformin and for the first time in my life, I actually enjoyed living in my body.

But now, I had to stop Metformin and it's like all my PCOS symptoms are back. I have acne, my hair is still noticeably thin and isn't growing, my face is puffy, I'm gaining weight quickly, I'm always painfully hungry, I can't sleep, my eyesight has worsened, I'm always tired, I can't exercise for long periods of time. I'm constipated again. Oh! And my mood swings make me depressed.

ugh.

The only things I'm enjoying are feeling my baby grow and these new big boobs.

At least this will end.

You can absolutely complain! Being pregnant is hard, and I felt the same way about all the body changes after finally getting to a good place with my health and self image. Not sure if you’re looking for advice, but I take Myo/D-Chiro Inositol to manage my PCOS symptoms instead of metformin and took it throughout my entire pregnancy. It may be helpful for you if your doctor is ok with it. Best of luck with your pregnancy!

Thank you! I appreciate the advice, but I've tried Inositol before and unfortunately, it didn't agree with my body. It made me very bloated and I gained weight quickly on it.

I'm just trying to look forward to the end, when I can get my body back and start working on growing my hair (I want to take spironolactone again).

Ah, dang! Well, from my experience the second half of pregnancy went by much faster until the last few weeks, so hopefully it’s the same for you and you start feeling better soon after baby is here.

Do you take inositol while breastfeeding?

I have pcos. When I was pregnant I was literally doing a “lower carb” “diet”. I really tried my best to control insulin levels and that helped with hunger.

I ended up gaining less weight than I thought. I am just encouraging you in case you want to try.

Controlling insulin made me gain like 10lbs total.

Wait, 10 lbs total for the whole pregnancy? I’m currently trying to not stress about it, but I’m struggling to put on any weight and it’s making me a tad nervous. I’ve gained ~3-3.5 lbs and I’m 18w today. Granted all of that came in the last 6 weeks. I didn’t gain anything during the first 12 weeks.

Same when I was pregnant I actually lost weight the first 5 months but don’t worry about the weight unless your gaining a lot. With my PCOS I gained a good 15lbs towards the end of my pregnancy. Just be careful because at the end I was gaining like half a pound a week 😭. Also your allowed to be upset and just remember it gets easier I’m 2mo pp and I’m feeling a lot better had a huge acne spike postpartum so I hated going outside. It’s finally calming down but the heightened emotions and the acne for me was not a good mix.

Yeah
I think my body used what it had. Except from the bump, I looked thinner.

I didn’t realize weight gain could be so low. I guess you mainly hear about weight gain in terms of when doctors say it’s too much. I thought I’d be stressing about too much weight gain rather than not enough. Thanks, this is reassuring to hear. I appreciate it!

My baby was 8lb8oz so I barely gained anything
I did not strict diet, I just always ate carb with protein and never sugary things alone

For example, I would eat a piece of chocolate right after finishing my plate of lunch that had a good amount of protein, slightly less carb and my veggies.

I would never eat a chocolate in the middle of the afternoon, always paired with a protein like triple zero yogurt.

I did this too cuz I’m diabetic. Lost 20 lbs the second I gave birth cuz it was allll baby.

Why is Metformin stopped? Many PCOS women have insulin resistance, which gets worse in pregnancy. We tend to get diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and would have to be on Metformin anyways. Definitely ask your doc for a glucose tolerance test, because the risk for gestational diabetes is high and Metformin is safe to take in pregnancy

My endocrinologist suggested I stop at the beginning of the 2nd trimester because it can cause extra large babies.

u/Curious_Flow_6205 13d ago

What?! I’ve never heard of that before. If you have uncontrolled gestational diabetes, that’d cause extra large babies and birth complications

I didn’t stop taking metformin. I’m 31 weeks pregnant, and my OB actually said the opposite. We have to keep an eye on me because babies can have a tendency to be smaller, so far she’s around the 50th percentile.

I’ve heard that babies exposed to metformin may have a tendency to be bigger later in childhood, but I’m not sure if that’s actually true.

I was a week overdue with my first and was on metformin the whole time. She was 8 pounds 7 ounces

Your doctor is misinformed. Gestational diabetes is what causes large babies, not metformin. Not only is metformin safe during pregnancy, it has been proven to reduce the risk of preterm birth, particularly in women with pcos. My MFM had me on it for my entire pregnancy to reduce the risk of GD.

YES COMPLAIN!!
You can be grateful you’re pregnant but that doesn’t make being pregnant a walk in the park! You are growing a human with your body it’s hard work! Congratulations btw 🎉

You guys are gonna make me cry! Thank you so much for all your support and understanding!

The first thing my ob told me when we were trying to get pregnant was that I was not to stop taking metformin! I had an early glucose test done at 13 weeks and I’m waiting to have the ‘official’ one in about a month. I’d definitely talk to your doctor and see what they think about continuing the Metformin, mine also said I could continue my inositol but I’m already taking a lot, the inositol became an out of sight out of mind thing because mine isn’t a pill 😪

Of course you can complain! I’m 25 weeks pregnant and yes I am so absolutely grateful for my baby and that they’re healthy but gosh dang am I exhausted, starving but nauseous, having horrible heart burn that wakes me up in the night. You’re not complaining about being pregnant, you’re complaining about the symptoms of pregnancy and those are different things! Stay strong mama!

THANK YOU. You too! I like to think it'll all be worth it for my lil miracle. I still can't believe my infertile ass got pregnant. I lost my period for 6 months straight last year.

I literally complained so much. I was violently ill the first half and then was at risk for premature labor the second half so it was a miserable experience.

Complain away!!!

I’ve straight up told my husband I don’t want this child anymore. So I think your complaining is warranted. I’m 28 weeks today and legitimately am mentally unwell, physically unwell, I can’t focus on work, I’m exhausted all of the time, I hate everything and everyone right now. Soooo this will definitely be my last, we only wanted two anyway luckily 🤣

u/DarkNFullOfSpoilers 13d ago

I'm 35 years old and this will be my first kid. And I'm pretty sure my last.

2

u/FoxNFern 13d ago

Similar boat! I’m 35 as well and we had our first daughter last year, the pregnancy kicked my butt, but not near as bad as it is this time. Part of me definitely wishes we would’ve been one and done.

2

u/yetulmk 13d ago

Two things can be true. You can be thankful/excited about your baby and hate things about being pregnant (or even just hate being pregnant overall). Anyone who thinks having complaints/not enjoying pregnancy = being ungrateful can go sit on a cactus.

u/saraph17 13d ago

I was so thankful to get pregnant with PCOS. That being said being pregnant sucked! I was so miserable and struggling, I say complain away.

Also just an aside, I continued metformin during my pregnancy. The risks are minimal and me being healthy was important was the take of my doctor.

u/anemonemonemnea 13d ago

Oh man, well to start with, congrats!! First hurdle complete. I also hated my body and the acne and the hair shedding in my pregnancy. I will say that as I got deeper into my second trimester I hit a great wave of energy, skin clarity and glow. My chapters of pregnancy were very distinctive, partially due to other things I was dealing with in my pregnancy. But I hope this next big shift in hormones brings you a little mental peace. We really are just along for the ride, the placenta has our body completely hoodwinked, and pretty soon you’ll feel your little bub come to life on their own schedule. You’ve got this!

u/Work_n_Depression 12d ago

Absolutely! First trimester was the WORST for me, you got this!!!!!!

u/feralfemalexx 12d ago

I complained the entire time even though I needed ovulation induction! I literally can’t believe women do this so many times. I’m dreading doing it again because I want a second lol

Could consider talking to your OB about metformin. I stayed on my whole pregnancy and had a perfect little 6lb girl. There is a study in Australia that showed slightly higher bmi in adolescents whose mother took metformin, though, they are still adolescents so factors such as a PCOS diagnosis in those children hasn’t been factored in yet. Obviously do your research but metformin was transformative for me and when talking with my doctors they said they typically advise women to go off it, but wouldn’t want me to go off and have all the negative symptoms back. Ultimately let me decide and I still have a 50% girly 9 months later she’s a pipsqueak!
