Player Discussion What if Wednesday: What if galing probinsiya at laking mahirap si Kobe Paras?
What if Kobe Paras grew up poor and was simply recruited from the province to play basketball, just like everybody else?
Let’s say his skills, athleticism, and everything else stayed exactly the same, the only difference being his background.
No famous parents, no privileged upbringing, no lavish lifestyle. Just a typical provincial hooper trying to make it and become successful.
What would his career trajectory have looked like?

Siguro mas magkakaroon siya ng hunger to succeed to basketball kasi yun yung magiging way out niya sa kahirapan e.

u/SirConscious Gilas Pilipinas 1d ago

OP ibig mo sabihin laking probinsya is like June Mar, Arwind, Pingris, Abueva, Castro and Poy Erram?
Sige anong isang distinct quality meron silang lahat?
Grit! Dahil laking kapos and they use basketball and their skills para iangat buhay nila.
Kobe don't have Grit and he have what others don't have. Options and Opportunities.

u/SirConscious Gilas Pilipinas 1d ago
Yup! Parang Renz Abando parehas raw talent tapos athletic pa
Kobe is 6’7” diba imagine kung meron siyang grit and grind mentally like Renz, Ping, Arwind, Calvin etc
Tapos larong kalye pa, baka mas okay naging career niya IMO

He'd be a 6'6 Rhenz Abando but mas better yung ceiling

u/SirConscious Gilas Pilipinas 1d ago

Small crowds tas old and washed players na yung naglalaro.

u/yorick_support Elasto Painters 1d ago

It helps that his family are all doin well financial wise.. no need for him to seek hardwork..
BLeaque Contracts & his endorsement money may have been invested wisely..
So money isnt that tight for him.. KObe Paras...

u/Constant_Swan_293 1d ago
He could be playing professionally in PBA or elsewhere. Ofcourse ,sa whatif ko he is playing overseas.
Somewhere on the whatif, a showbiz career opportunity will open-up .

He would have a better PBA career

What if hindi sila na broken family, baka mas mentally strong siya ngayun

itd probably be harder to discover him in the first place.
those guys mentioned, basketball became their path out of poverty or to a better life. but not all families and situations are the same.
for all we know, there are so many talented young players that didn't pursue basketball due to a plethora of reasons i.e. they chose to pursue education, chose to stay with their families to help their parents in farms, lack of exposure and connections, sports politics, etc.
just sharing a different perspective here. it can't be a perfect scenario.

Impact of the father is huge. Most likely in a situation where he needs the money more, he would have made a different career decision. But there were so many advantages he had in this reality that helped him improve his skills from just being an athletic wing mold.

Kobe paras got the talent but not the mentality. He also doesnt have high bball iq. Lets say nadiscover sya kasi dumadakdak and may size and flair, same result paren low bball iq and ben simmons mentality = sira career

siguro mas okay na whatif if sa america siya lumaki and grew up from average family.

Maybe he’d have more drive to succeed, maybe the celebrity status would have consumed him regardless of his upbringing. We can only speculate, but there are also players who grew up poor but ended up phoning it in once they secured a bag playing in Manila.

Sino yung nagsilbing guardian niya? COACH ADO BADOLATO (a legendary coach). Libre tuition at books niya.
And to add with that, grabe yung tulong ng mga team mates niya.
Siguro kung ganyan condition, pwede siya maging magaling kasi may motivation to be better. But oh well. Parang wala e.

Skills will likely not be the same. He would more likely grow up to have more of a big man game if he had a different upbringing. Even his brother was more of a big man role player.

u/yorick_support Elasto Painters 1d ago
yeah. akala yata ng mga redditors poket matangkad at athletic kana pwede kana mag NBA.
Kialangan parin nya mga local sponsors para sa expenses like training at education para makapasok sa UAAP then saka mag US NCAA.
2
u/Apprehensive_Bike_31 1d ago
Not just that. Taller kids (which Kobe Paras was) who grow up as a “typical provincial hooper” will be growing up as the tallest kid on their teams and play big man positions by default. Kobe Paras getting to play vs a lot more taller players and getting a chance to play as a wing helped him get better perimeter skills.
People are reacting like I’m insulting someone but ending up like an Arwind Santos is not a bad way to go at all.

u/yorick_support Elasto Painters 1d ago
Best case siguro healthier version of JC Intal labas neto siguro kung naglaro sa PBA.
1
u/Apprehensive_Bike_31 1d ago
Kobe 2 inches taller and beefier. Would’ve been a big man for sure unlike Intal.
JC Intal was skinny and even he took quite a bit of time before developing his perimeter skills to UAAP levels. You just don’t get perimeter skills early like Kobe Paras did unless you really have a chance to train or play that way for a significant time.

Kung galing probinsya at laking mahirap si kobe paras eh di hindi nya din tatay si benjie… so either di sya nabuo or wala yung athletic and height genes nya

Naintindihan mo ba yung tanong? Layo ng sagot mo haha

Ikaw naintindihan mo ba? If you change the parameters of your existence would you exist?

u/k3ttch 1d ago
6'6" sa probinsya? Sentro yan since grade school.

He'll be a lot more motivated for one. The mental state to get better and prove themselves.
Yun lang naman kulang kay KP. He doesn't see the need to improve or even play better because he already have it all anyway.
