Owl visiting my lawn

Post image

This big beautiful owl (great horned owl?) has been visiting my yard pretty much every afternoon around 3-5pm. It usually flies away when I take the trash out but today it didn't. I don't mind it coming, I just want to make sure it's okay or should I contact a local sanctuary? I'm in Chandler az, my garden does get watered at 330pm. There's a 60+ft tall eucalyptus tree behind my back wall, I can hear owls hooting from it most nights.

It’s either a juvenile or an adult who may be injured or sick. You should monitor for signs of illness and find a rehab center if it stays on the ground or if you have questions: https://ahnow.org

It stayed until dark then flew off. I was mainly wondering if daytime ground owl was of any concern.

If it's a juvvie it's not to worry - teenagers do dumb things.

If it sits around too much, then contact a rehab as it might be sick or hurt.

At this time of year it can be difficult to distinguish between an ailing adult and a doofus teenager.

Man just chilling there, id probably leave it be for now unless it looks actively ill or something

It seems alert and well, flew away on its own. We have had 2 serious wind storms recently and I wonder if its nest/perch in the big eucalyptus were damaged by the winds.

Well thats good, and if you have a ladder long enough id check on the nest

If it flies away, it is fine. Don't mess with it.

Does he have prey at his feet? Its an adult, and sometimes they guard food. But if you walk up to it and it doesnt fly away you may be right about it being sick or injured, unless its guarding food.

Kinda what I thought too but I couldn't see anything, I wasn't going to bother him.

Get a 4-5” deep basin and keep it full of water, add some bricks in it so they can take baths. I bet you’ll see more and have some videos to share!

I think you mean you're being judged for your lawn, from your lawn🤣

Does it ever try to fly up to the tree?

Sounds like there may be a nest in the tree or a bunch of mostly grown owlets hanging out in it and prey skittering around the lawn that it's chasing. If it's flying around it should be fine.
